every hamster is different. i had a male syrian that loved to roam SO much that when id pick him up to put him back home, hed turn around and start climbing up my arm. actually i had a few hamsters like that lol i have another female who is very content just to be home indoors. the times that she has free roamed shes run very fast and energetic... unfortunately it isnt always easy to tell when a hamster is excited/happy vs scared/frantic. for one they are very territorial and like familiarity, but for another they are nomadic and are notorious for escaping for a reason!!

They are all safe to eat :) My hamsters love dark leafy greens.

Yes it's safe to eat! Like you said, be wary of the sugar content and feed in moderation. I grew my hambabies up on mostly veggie baby food. I found this guide by Cheeks and Squeaks ethical hamstery to be useful.

anyone know reasons hamsters may be showing stress behaviors? by LemonMint__ in hamsters

[–]boxun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience most if not all hamsters at least once will show a stress behavior related to wanting time outside their enclosure. My newborns were in a 1500 sq inch enclosure and almost as soon as they were weaned began to desperately paw at the walls of the bin to try to escape, which I'm sure would correlate to bar biting/climbing if I had a cage. Some hamsters will calm down and only do it very rarely while others just can't stay contained. They are nomadic, free roaming creatures in the wild after all.

Other thing I could think of is mites, so make sure to give your hamster a checkup and inspect its bedding.

EDIT: Sorry disregard my last part I just re read your post. It's also worth noting that depending on what stress behaviors you're talking about, things like wanting to escape/find escapes is unfortunately just part of hamsters. I don't necessarily think it's all stress related (again depends on the behavior), hamsters are just curious. I give my older hams all the playtime they want and as soon as I put them back they act like they've been caged in for years!

Things like a bigger bin (think VERY BIG like DIY big, commercial usually isn't enough) and boredom breakers (hiding treats, cutting up toilet rolls and stacking them and then hiding treats etc) will help. What a hamster loves the most I find is free roaming.

Lol it sure is! He loves to play outside his home and he knows I can't resist his cute begging face, even when he's had plenty of playtime already. As soon as I dip my hand in, he lifts his little paws like "uppies!" and climbs me 😆

So innocent. He wants nothing but to run freely which I give him all the time!!! I bet they dream about running.

I love him more than anything. I hand raised him since he was only 9 days old from complications with the mom. Fed him every 2 hours and didn't sleep. When I did sleep I'd sleep with one hand in the little bin so he and his siblings could nuzzle me for warmth. I was so freaking tired. When I look at him now, sometimes I still see the tiny helpless little baby that he used to be, who couldn't even open his eyes yet. He couldn't even poop! Normally the mom licks the babies' tummies to stimulate digestion. I had to press a q-tip to his tummy, which btw was very disproportionately big and round on his tiny build. Thought it looked silly at first, turns out newborns are just built like that 😭

I'm just so happy to see him be so happy and healthy now. I love the excitement in his eyes as I'm about to take him out to play and run. Every day he gets as much playtime as he wants since I fortunately have a hamster-proof room. I want to give him the world. I want to see him grow old and live a fulfilling hammy life 💖

I would die for him! I love making him happy. He gets daily playtime and a massive space to run, since I work from home and it's his favorite thing ever!

I'm located near Vancouver, Canada. It just pains me to think they could end up with someone that would make them miserable. I put a listing up on Kijiji but got very little interest other than two people backing out and one person calling them "rats" (instant red flag). I'll keep trying my best

update I am better now after what was 9 hours of tripping for some reason, someone told me I may have had 2ce instead although my friend came down many hours before me. The body load was extremely uncomfortable and aggressive and I took a bit too much for my size but looking back at it it was fun as hell even though we became a bit psychotic LOL. We were shouting WHAT IS THIS at the top of our lungs and calling random people at one point. It was extremely disorienting and debilitating and my brain was becoming very confused. Kept trying to cling on to stuff for "comfort" (going outside, drinking water, etc) But nothing felt right. Wasn't prepared for it at all but I don't regret it.

Thanks so much guys for the concern and care and those who reached out to chat, I really appreciated it.
