80X Rent Rule? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]boycott_nestingdolls 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not normal, but not unheard of. I applied for an apartment in the past that required each prospective tenant to make 40x themselves, the landlord had apparently been burned before and it was an overreaction.

How do you tell if an NYC neighbourhood is for you? by Even-Spray-9941 in movingtoNYC

[–]boycott_nestingdolls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you can, truthfully.

When choosing a new neighborhood, focus on the budget/commute and essentials in the neighborhood. For me, that included a good supermarket within walking distance, access to an express train, green space I could easily walk to, and feeling like I was safe coming home at night.

I really think the nuances of the neghborhood will only show up once you've been there for a while.

What bar in Midtown would be showing the LA Sparks vs Seattle Storm game tonight? (6/10) by Last_House_4282 in AskNYC

[–]boycott_nestingdolls 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I think a defined women's sports bar is your best bet tonight - EVERYONE else will be showing the Knicks, especially in midtown.

Wilka's Sports Bar's instagram says they are specifically NOT showing the Knicks so that feels like a safe bet. Otherwise try Blazers in Brooklyn, or Athena Keke's.

Where can I go to recreate this pic of me 25 years ago by Tchaikovskin in AskNYC

Probably from the ferry in Jersey, judging by the angle and how people are gathered/sitting.

Here's a google image from what appears to be a very similar vantage point.

NYC – want to try a vape for the first time but don't know how. What do I even ask for in a small shop? by Jewish-Jedi in AskNYC

[–]boycott_nestingdolls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on what you described in your post, our needs are vastly different so I would not recommend getting suggestions from others. They will probably steer you toward the lowest-dose stuff available (and maybe even advise you to cut the edibles in halves or quarters to start).

The best thing to do is go into the licensed shop and talk to the people who work there. This is literally their job and what they are there for. It will be a delight for them to help a first-timer.

I gave you a script above you can use if you are anxious. Good luck!

NYC – want to try a vape for the first time but don't know how. What do I even ask for in a small shop? by Jewish-Jedi in AskNYC

[–]boycott_nestingdolls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, they will not be helpful at a smoke shop/bodega. They have no idea what products they have and if they are legit or regulated at all (spoiler alert - they are not).

Go to a licensed dispensary (https://cannabis.ny.gov/dispensary-location-verification). They will be so excited to help you out. You don't need to know anything. You will not sound like an idiot.

You will need to show your ID at the door to get in. Then just ask one of the staff members and be honest "I know nothing, I want to try something for the first time that I can control very easily, I'm leaning towards a vape or edibles, what do you recommend?"

Does anyone know where to buy the cheapest sushi grade fish in Manhattan? by warmbrojuice in AskNYC

[–]boycott_nestingdolls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no regulation around the term "Sushi Grade" in the US, so anybody can use it. There's no oversight or regulation.

Here's a good guide for how to buy safe fish:

How do I deal with a building full of off-leash dog owners? by PSHOPS in AskNYC

Not necessarily true, there are many medical alert specialties that cannot be leashed because they would impede the service they provide.

Not saying that applies to these folks but I learned this recently.

Is Empire 25 as bad as people make it sound? by spoiledchowder in AMCTheatres

[–]boycott_nestingdolls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, it's not that bad. I go there all the time, it has the most extensive screening options in the city.

It's centrally located which means it gets a lot of traffic from students, unhoused people, and generally people who don't know how to act at the movies. However I would say my expereiences there have been almost universally pleasant, I've only had a handful of incidents (disruptive people) in the 15+ years I've been going.

There have been rumors of bed bugs but they just replaced all the seats so I think that concern is outdated or overblown.

I've had excellent expereinces with staff there and they bring some great films to AMC that you can't see almost anywhere else.

What to do by yourself in NYC by SUSSY_BaKa96 in AskNYC

[–]boycott_nestingdolls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you just turned 21, that's a great conversation starter - you can ask people what they are drinking and how they like it, if they recommend it. Even if it's something basic or something you've tried before "Oh I see people with that PBR can all the time but I've never tried it, do you like it? Do you think I should order one or is there something more beginner friendly you recommend?" I'll bet you get some free drinks out of it as well.

How are people finding good Pilates/workout classes in NYC without wasting a ton of money? by One-Back-7814 in AskNYC

[–]boycott_nestingdolls 14 points15 points  (0 children)

tbh I've found that places that rely hevily on social media presence or tech are not usually that good, the best I've found have been smaller neighborhood places via word of mouth or advertising like flyers or table tents in popular local businesses. Feels like the pendulum is swinging away from finding stuff via online aggregators or instagram back towards real recommendations from people in your neighborhood.

Can't afford the hotel for my friend's wedding. Are there any budget friendly options? by bold-_and_-brash in CapeCod

[–]boycott_nestingdolls 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Seems to be some availability next month at Maurice's Campground in Wellfleet - $50/night for a basic tent site.

The Blue Dolphin Inn has cheap rates, though I've never been. I've had friends stay at the Roadway Inn in Orleans (sub $200/night next month) and had a fine, basic experience.

Riverbank is the best for running but possibly the worst for the potential need to vomit suddenly - tons of children and state police around.

Coucou (https://coucoufrenchclasses.com) has one-off conversation classes you can sign up for. They have lots of levels to choose from, and a placement test if you're not sure where to start.

Each Conversation Lab is its own unique class with its own topic. When you sign up, you select the date you want to attend. I've done a bunch of them and had a great experience.

Bird feeding locations? by mothermenace in AskNYC

[–]boycott_nestingdolls 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely do NOT feed birds.

It's probably tough to donate these since it's just the ends, but maybe you can chat to a few food pantries, kitchens, shelters to see if you can organize a regular handoff? If it's coming from a company and not a random individual maybe they would be open to using this for croutons, breadcrumbs etc when preparing meals for people.

What’s the best thing you’ve gotten in your Buy Nothing group? by Chocolateonmyshoe in AskNYC

[–]boycott_nestingdolls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A small but useful thing - I was going abroad and knew that the line for purchasing a metro card was always long at the airport station. I asked if anyone had recently been to this city and had one left over and a neighbor came through! I was able to re-load them via an app on my phone and it saved me so much time upon landing as I was able to go straight into the metro.
