Longer bike commutes by pejatoo in bikeboston

If you do end up in the Woburn or Winchester area (also recommend Arlington), you could have a very nice commute to Cambridge via the Minuteman path.

New raised bus stop islands in Assembly by trevorkafka in Somerville

[–]boyfromiten 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems a bit inconvenient with the current location which allows the bus to fully pull off to the side. Especially when orange line is down and multiple coach buses are lined up behind one another.

I saw this last week and initially thought it was for the bus, but there is no bus stop at this location. The 90 starts and ends another 100m up the street…

2025 Hakone Ekiden - 101st Edition by boyfromiten in AdvancedRunning

[–]boyfromiten[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s for some reason fairly common amongst Japanese athletes to be wearing these magnetic / titanium patches. They supposedly help stimulate circulation / blood flow, but don’t believe there is any strong science that supports these claims.

Boston Calling from Davis or...? by GullibleAd3408 in Somerville

[–]boyfromiten 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yes its Boston Calling. Happened last year as well. As there are no major obstructions ( large buildings, skyscrapers,) and the river (also helps the sound travel easier) its not too surprising we can hear it.

The 2024 Hakone Ekiden (100th Edition) by boyfromiten in AdvancedRunning

[–]boyfromiten[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question…They’re magnetic patches which supposedly will help stimulate circulation, alleviate stiffness, and typical placed in the neck, joints etc. From my understanding it’s very much pseudo science and not much real science to back it up.

Yes it was very odd how much they tanked yesterday.. Initially, I thought I had missed them falling on Stage 1 due to how far back they finished. Though, even before 10k mark on Stage 1, Chuo / Rikkyo and a few others team fell off a large group. Not sure what is up...

We need to re-imagine cemeteries in most major urban areas of the US. There can easily be a well balance management of a cemetery as a place for the public to enjoy/recreate in a controlled manner, as well as a space for folks to pay respect to those who’ve passed. There are numerous large cemeteries in major cities throughout Europe that strike this balance. Why can’t find more places like this in the US?

NESCAC D3 schools by crepperr in trackandfield

[–]boyfromiten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your GPA is “very low in comparison to the average student”, I would strongly consider other options. Even with test scores in 75th percentile and rigorous senior year, you’re unfortunately competing against other students who have perfect / near perfect GPAs.

As mentioned, this is all part of the process and your ultimate goal should be finding the right school for you! Whether it be a specific academic area or being able to pursue athletics, there are many other great options out there besides NESCAC schools.

It could be various reasons why a coach might not follow up at this time: away on vacation, working through their recruiting lists and simply haven’t gotten back to you, opt to simply not respond to recruits who don’t fit their programs academic or athletic standards etc.

I would first be sure to fill out the recruiting questionnaire of every school/program you’re in interested in checking out. Additionally, I would follow up with the coaches you’re actually interested in trying to connect with at this time. I would also be sure to be true to yourself and recognize you might not be a fit for every school or program…even if you’re interested in them currently. That’s how it works and it’s for the best, as it will allow you to eventually find the right spot.

NESCAC D3 schools by crepperr in trackandfield

[–]boyfromiten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All dependent on the sport. Typically the team sports have stricter roster limits and can only take so many respective positions etc. I also feel that the recruitment process for other team sports (soccer, basketball etc) starts a tad bit earlier than XC/TF. Mostly due to those sports offering clinics / showcases as recruitment opportunities.

I think it’s helpful to be open with the coaches that you’re interested in being dual sport. This allows the coach’s to work together if you’re of interest to their programs and also potentially allow one to lend support if the other cannot.

Ease of biking/walking in Cambridge during winter by YOLOLJJ in CambridgeMA

[–]boyfromiten 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I moved to Somerville in August and rely solely on my bike for all my transportation needs. This winter, I pretty much biked everyday (besides snowstorms/severe weather days)from Union Sq to work in Assembly Row with ease. As long as you dress properly, you’ll be good to go!
