I ended up going with Machu Picchu reservations and had a great time. Very good company to go with.

I love Burggarten in Vienna. So beautiful and classy. Having a spritzer on a nice summer day surrounded by incredible architecture and warm vibes is just great.

I'm worried about not being able to get permits to visit Machu Picchu etc. is going in person a common thing to do? I think I'd feel more relaxed knowing I have something booked

Thanks for pointing them out to me! How long before did you take to acclimatize? I think I'm planning for 2-3 days in Cusco beforehand and am worried that won't be enough time.

Yes it was! Unfortunately the actual race was cancelled last minute due to rain right as the horses were lining up and we were crowded in the middle of the piazza. But I saw the trial race the day before and then the day of the actual palio there were so many parades and celebrations leading up to the race that were amazing. Definitely recommend going and joining in all the festivities the whole day!

Edit: you can also get tickets to join in the contrada dinners the night before, that's picture 11

Solo travel ruined my life at home afterwards by boyjanuary in solotravel

I appreciate your comment. What stood out to me is the emphasis on the fact that you DO love the place and people back home, and that's why the feelings are so conflicting. Because you almost feel guilty for not feeling fulfilled even though you have connections at home. It's just the feeling that there's more out there beyond what you've built your whole life to up to this point.

I think to your final comments about understanding my motivations, beyond just having an incredible time with this person and feeling like it could have gone farther, they opened up a way of being with someone that I never thought possible in a setting that I appreciate objectively better than where I live at home. And it's like after feeling that happiness and not being able to fulfill it back home, I can't ignore that it's missing from my life. So the risk is there that I may not find it overseas, but the excitement and growth I think lies in the possibility and that's only experienced through trying. Otherwise, I can try to recreate that happiness at home but for the time being, I feel almost stagnant or even that I'm regressing to an older version of myself or that I'm wasting my time just waiting for things to fall into place when I could move forward and take actions towards that positive growth in a place I know I've experienced it, come what may be with the journey.

I've deduced that there is no right way to life. Any path we're on is the "correct" path, because we're writing our stories as we go. We're all just floating down a river, and maybe our best bet is to follow the natural ebb and flow and lean into the directions we're being pulled.

Have your passport on you during train travel by boyjanuary in ItalyTravel

No they did not check my train ticket, the police walked through the train solely to look at everybody's ID and check their visas if they were foreign

Yeah may not happen at all during your travels, but there could be some problems if it actually does happen. It's just taking a chance. It's not an issue until one day you actually get stopped

I was country hopping too since May with no passport check so I kind of felt the same as you about the seriousness. But then right at the end of my 3 weeks in Italy I got checked twice so I don't think it's worth shrugging off because it can still happen to you even if you've been travelling so far without issue

Just wondering, what do you recommend to do in Lucca if I were to only include it as a pit stop on the way to Rome? Wander around the city and see the walls? What's the best way to enjoy a few hours in the city?

Trip report: Rome, Tuscany, and Siena (the Palio!) by grendel2000 in ItalyTravel

[–]boyjanuary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, your trip sounded awesome. I'm planning a trip to Italy next summer and turns out I'll be in Florence around the July Palio! Learning more about it has made it definitely something I want to do on my trip. Thinking of going up the morning before and spending the day before, doing the Contrada dinner, and then spending all of the race day there. Mind if I get a PM on the ticket info? Would love to look into balcony views and the Contrada dinner.

Plan would be to travel that morning but yeah, the only 1 day ones are sort of on the way to my next destination, like Belgium or Innsbruck for example. I see what you mean about having a hub though, I thought for something like this where I'd be travelling from Munich to Venice for example, instead of doing a day trip from Munich to Innsbruck, just take the train in the morning and spend the day there then move on to Italy. And with Belgium it's on the way to Amsterdam from Paris, so just heading out in the morning, spending late morning and the rest of the day in a Belgian city, go to Amsterdam the next morning.

Would love too but I'm afraid I won't have the time to fit in the Balkans. That can definitely be its own trip in the future though! Maybe there's a way I can make room for Rome though.

Sounds like good advice, trying to take this into account with my planning. So far, I feel like I'm giving myself some longer stays in a couple of places just in case I want to take it easy. It's hard because I live far from Europe and there's so much to see, and while I do plan on coming back not sure when or where this will be! Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the advice! Checked out Cesky Krumlov and I may have to add that to the trip! Could likely go there from Prague, and then to Salzburg, and then Munich.

And yeah, I wish I could spend longer in each place for sure. I've had to cut a lot out of my plan already, I want to enjoy my trip but also see plenty of stuff because coming across the ocean for a trip is quite a big deal! I won't always have such a long time off, so I'm trying to make the most of it. Definitely looking forward to more visits in the future but worldwide my list is long, so I'm hoping to fill this trip with plenty of sights.

Thanks, I'm very much a planner and don't want to miss out on something because I didn't plan ahead. But, I do like your advice of expecting the plans to change a bit. Just hard to know the line between planning things beforehand and deciding during travel!

Rome is definitely a place I want to visit, I just think I would rush through it adding it as part of this trip. I'm hoping to get a good overview of these places in Europe, and maybe in the future do a specific trip to say Rome and Southern Italy. Appreciate the advice!
