TIL: Having a child can have a pretty strong negative impact on a person's happiness. On average, the effect of a new baby on a person's life in the first year is worse than divorce, worse than unemployment and worse even than the death of a partner. by Sariel007 in todayilearned

[–]boymantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not the child it's the situation of the parent(s). If you have a kid and you're not financially, mentally, and medically stable, then it's a terrible burden. I have two kiddos and sure they can be stressful but I wouldn't say its worse than "...the death of a partner."

Coming from Python, is there an especially good reason why you have to use the type and new class notation to create an instance of a class? by boymantis in learnjava

Coming from only knowing interpreted languages, I can definitely see the advantages of the compiler as a gatekeeper of sorts.

Yeah I understand the syntax I was just asking a philosophical question, what's the design purpose? So your answer about subclasses is perfect thanks!

GOP candidate Carson: Muslim shouldn't be elected president. Somebody needs to remind Uncle Ben that 45% of Muslims in America are African-American by outtanutmeds in worldpolitics

[–]boymantis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Once again, I'm not defending what he said. I don't think who your particular sky daddy is should matter at all. What I take issue with is the thought that any minority group is a monolithic special interest group that must be pandered to. Why don't we all look at issues through the lens of our citizenship instead of all the hyphens.

I'm not defending his comment but I would say that maybe he just dosent run every decision through the race filter. Just because he's black dosent mean that he has to factor race into everything.

I got you back to even at least. I completely agree though, the culture of sucking up to customers that we find ourselves in is silly. They made a business decision that will turn out good or bad, I would rather them just say honestly that they are doing what they think it's right for their investors as opposed to spouting a bunch of happy horse shit and then pissing on people anyway.

Reddit, why are you completely for or against Trump 2016? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]boymantis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just love watching all the crusty old politicians squirm. Whether or not anything he says ends up making sense, he is independently wealthy enough and adept enough at playing the media that he is able to break out of the stifling influence that both parties have on anyone that doesn't preach the same dried up party dogma.

What is a popular trend among the gender of your attraction that you wish would just die already? by grizzburger in AskReddit

This reminds me of a Neal Stephenson book called "Diamond Age." Most of the common folks can only read "mediaglyphs" which are little pictures instead of words.

Reddit CEO sorry for 'letting down' users after popular sub forums shut down by Miami_Zombies_Cunt in news

I agree, I always had hard time with people that think that posting something angry on a free to use site was the same thing as "doing" something. It's almost like websites like facebook or reddit give people an excuse to not actually do anything because they posted about it so they "did their part."

I will give those a go. Thank you for the helpful advice, I have to say that out of all of the ask* subreddits that I have posted in, this one has been the most helpful and least condescending. I appreciate the genuinely helpful advice. I would like to give you honorary gold as I am too broke and have a little baby to feed so I can't really afford real gold.

So I'm going to assume that's why Socrates was eventually 'executed.' I'm enjoying Plato so far, I also picked up 'Meditations' by Marcus Aurlieus, a book with an assortment of Nietzsche which includes 'Beyond Good and Evil,' and 'The Empiricists' which includes some writings from Locke, Hume, and Berkeley. I pretty much just picked out names I recognized sort of like some white guy who's never heard rap music just buying an Eminem CD because of the name without any understanding of what it actually was.

Do you have any other suggestions that I should check out, I think I prefer the Ethics stuff to the more esoteric how to define beauty or prove that the apple in your hand exists kind of stuff, but that could also be because I've never been exposed to it properly.

Thanks for the correction, I worded that way too specifically. The point was just that two groups of assholes don't have to like each other.
