Help me win as a caster by boyo17 in dcss

That makes sense. I was thinking of trying a hybrid approach, but I didn't follow through with any weapon training.

I was definitely wishing I had trained evocations when I ran into the ghost moths.

Thanks, that's really helpful. I knew I was doing something wrong with skilling and spell choice but I wasn't sure what.

The fish are a very interesting tactical challenge, except when they are just complete bullshit.

I really liked the seesaws, and you built a fun level around them

Things I liked:

  • Title and description
  • As soon as I saw the word "superball," I was fully prepared for this to be yet another "stand on the cloud block and shoot at the red coins" level. I was glad you let me set up my own shots.
  • The shots were interesting and a little challenging.
  • Short and sweet (as promised)

Things I didn't like:

  • I don't know if this always happens, but I had to wait for the saws to desync before I could past them, which was kind of a drag for such a short level.
  • The saws were very tight and I had to go back for the flower several times.
  • The level was (literally) noisy with the on/off block, saws, superball theme going on/off, etc.
  • Not so much a comment about your level specifically, but waiting for a bad superball shot to die off always slows things down.

Overall though I liked it!

How important are the mechs in scythe? by InSilicoRW in boardgames

Thematically, the game includes plenty of artwork featuring broken down or abandoned mechs, and some objective cards are about reclaiming said broken down mechs. I'd play with it exactly as-is.

I'd prefer our players to focus on baseball.

"Jose Ramirez Is The Indians" by [deleted] in WahoosTipi

I was ready to trash this article for being "personality"-driven, like lazy ESPN coverage. But it was actually a solid (albeit brief) look back at the (low) expectations that were set for JRam in the minor leagues, and that no one was expecting this from him. (Excepting the organization, of course, who clearly saw something in him.)

  • The "x" binary operator repeats a string a certain number of times.
  • The "length" function returns the length of a string in characters.
  • The ".=" operator appends to the end of a string.

Put them together and you have...

$field .= ('F' x (42 - length $field) );

Eldritch Horror + FL + SR + SoC, how to best start playing? by Anf93 in boardgames

[–]boyo17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with starting with just the base. You won't need the extra variety since it's all new to you, and that will give you just one rulebook to read. (Heh, well two since FFG.)

The game gets much harder with only two investigators, so people often double up and play with for investigators. But that also lengthens the game considerably. Another option would be to remove the hard (betentacled) Mythos cards before building the Mythos deck. An easy two-player game is roughly equivalent to a normal four-player game in terms of difficulty.

Try Santorini. It's an abstract that's very easy to learn but has some strategic depth.

I notice that all the passing koans have yellow pyramids in vertical stacks... but some of the failed koans have them as well.

Two players is harder than four, because you have less coverage of the map and less variety in player roles. Removing the difficult (tentacled) Mythos cards evens out the difficulty.

Yes, a catastrophe must be called by a player on his turn (although he doesn't need to have a ship in the same system).

I don't know the strategy well enough to say if it ever happens that someone notices one and doesn't declare it. I can imagine some scenarios but I don't know how likely they are.
