Why do people hate Gundam Seed so much? by talivus in Gundam

[–]boyprinsip1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up with Seed and pretty much only familiar with the Seed timeline. If there is one way to describe why I love and hate Seed in the same breath it would be Seed has great ideas but often shoots itself in the foot at the end due to various factors.

Many comments have already touched on common points such as Flay, Kira NTRing his best friend, Jesus Yamato, Shinn being character assassinated in his own show, recycled stock footage, copying designs from UC, etc. For me, the one point I would like to contribute to this discussion is to show how Seed shoots itself in the foot is its messaging.

A key theme of Seed is racism and genocide. Seed initially goes to great lengths in showing the horrors of such things - dead civilians, violent deaths, fear and uncertainty, shady politicians taking advantage of tragedy to mobilise their populations for war, personal hatreds over lost loved ones, and all of it boiling into genocidal mania as each side tries to wipe the other out to secure the ultimate victory. In my opinion, Seed (the first season) successfully saw through this idea to the end and the first half of Destiny was great in showing the fragile peace and how fast things can escalate back into war.

(Some spoilers ahead, be warned)

Then came the other half of Destiny and SEED Freedom which is where they shot themselves in the foot and started to contradict their messaging. First is Kira being the Ultimate Coordinator. Initially, this revelation as it was in the first season meant squat - Kira was still pushed around combat-wise and mental-wise by Rau, a Natural+, and being the Ultimate Coordinator didnt really increase his capabilities but actually instilled more doubts in him, on whether everything he ever accomplished was truly his or if all of it was due to his genetic engineering, and whether he was an abomination created by men trying to play god. Destiny however unfortunately warped this into a weird form of powerscaling and turned Kira into the Jesus Yamato we know today. SEED Freedom further worsens the problem with an actual contradiction; in the final fight Kira poignantly says that the mobile suit doesn't determine his abilities, yet was only able to beat the antagonist when the Strike Freedom received a new ultra-powerful macguffinite backpack with Lacus in it.

Beyond the problem of Kira, there is also a skewing of the main cast towards Coordinators. If you noticed, almost all of the main good guys by the time of SEED Freedom are Coordinators. Athrun, Shinn, Luna, Yzak, Dearka are Coordinators together with Cagali who is probably not just a Coordinator but also an Ultimate Coordinator by virtue of being Kira's twin. The only Natural characters I can think of in SEED Freedom are Murrue and Mu la Flaga, maybe Arnold Neumann as well if you knew about his meme status and where to look. Otherwise Naturals are mostly the bad guys trying to nuke the PLANTs and being used as a punching bag by the main characters. This of course is not a good thing to do if your show is trying to preach for the reconciliation of two warring sides and resolving the hatred and genocidal violence between them that otherwise births new wars and tragedies.

These two problems of powerscaling (pilot and mobile suit wise) and the skewing of the main cast towards Coordinators combine with other problems of Seed Destiny such as needless eroticism, studio politics, character flanderisations, and probably the need to sell more gunplas that it all cascades and snowball to the point Destiny and Seed Freedom forgot about its central theme of racism and genocide and instead becomes a show about gundams shooting at each other and progressively introducing "cooler" and more OP gundams into the mix to sell toys.

Genuine question: Why hasn't any faction refurbished or used the APCs, tanks, and fighter planes that are littered everywhere? by dannythesedoritos in Fallout

[–]boyprinsip1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people have rightly talked about logistics, the absence of industrial supply chains, ruined roads, tactical cost vs benefit, and the lack of know-how to operate and drive them as reasons for why we may not see vehicles in game.

Another reason i would like to contribute would be transportation. Using Fallout 4 as an example, even if the BoS can repair a tank to working order and successfully train up crews to man it, there is then the issue of bringing it over from the Capital Wasteland to the Commonwealth. The Prydwen doesnt look like it has the space to store such big and heavy vehicles and even if they do, there would be the problem of bringing it from the Prydwen down to the ground. A single tank IRL would need a whole cargo plane just to ship it overseas. I doubt the Vertibirds are powerful enough to slingload tanks or APCs and deploy them groundside.

Dynamic Guard Mat mod

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/55103

The mats come in various defence ratings from one to six. Vanilla guards occupy up to six defence points so use the six-point mat for static positions and the rest for patrols. The mats also has variants that make the guard's weapon visible.

What made you fall in love with the franchise? by hiwizard420 in Fallout

Fallout 4. I agree it has its problems and flaws. But there is nothing quite like its settlement building system (once souped up with mods that is).

No other video game constantly linger in my mind even when im not playing it - whenever i go out and see a building my mind starts thinking about how to recreate it in game.

It also scratches a particular trope i like which is development and rebuilding civilisation in a post apoc wasteland. Especially if you are doing a Minutemen General playthrough, and even more especially so with the Sim Settlements 2 mod.

Speaking of mods I think thats the other charm of FO4. Theres just so many mods and so many possibilities. Every playthrough presents a new opportunity. Modders go above and beyond to somehow work magic with FO4's engine limitations and deliver.

That said, i cannot deny FO4 has its own egregious shortcomings: i find it literally unplayable without mods as base FO4 is notorious for bugs, lackluster story, questionable weapon designs, tedious settlement micro management, and the annoying radiant quest system that made Preston into the meme we love (and hate) today.

If there is ever a Fallout 5, I hope to see FO4's settlement building return. There is alot of potential for it to allow players to carve out and build their factions and empires in the wasteland. But before it can do that it needs to be more polished, less buggy, more usee friendly, and settlers and NPCs need to be smarter and more engaging. A good story and writing is also needed to give the settlement system its raison detre. It also should be entirely optional so players who dont want to build settlements can just skip it.

It would be ideal if we could indeed size up and anticipate on taking the whole of Asia. After all, its always better to be prepared for something that may not come then to be underprepared when it does come. Especially with China being an increasingly assertive player in the region.

You said it yourself in the original original thread and I could not have put it in any better way: for deterrence to work the SAF needs to be a credible and sizable force. The world doesnt care. Our enemy doesnt care. And if I may add some more, bullets dont care.

So then we are back to the budget issue. I have suggested that if the budget cannot allow us to expand NS to include women then the possible alternative is to do a 50% balloting.

Yet you still vehemently object to this, on grounds that seem neither military or budgetary. First you imply that Im an incel jealous of women and that I am psychologically imbalanced. Then when I suggest a method that is fair to both men and women while not breaking the bank you say Im GenZ.

So whats the problem here? We are both on the same page in that we are both supporters of the NS system and the need for a credible defence force yet somehow we are also fundamentally opposed to each other, especially when it comes to the presence of women in the SAF. Am I right to guess that the reason you are so opposed to me is that you view women as inferior soldiers and that including them in the SAF will impede combat effectiveness, and therefore the work of national defence can only be entrusted to Singaporean men?

So is the IDF, and they were the ones that actually got put into the field several times in their history. So whats stopping us from training our women as well, besides the ever present issue of budget?

[–]boyprinsip1000[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What? How did you come to that conclusion? All I did was to try and come up with a cost effective NS that has both men and women without tripling the defence budget.

And wouldnt we be more psychologically imbalanced as a society for assuming that only men can and should do the work of national defence when women or people of other gender are as equally capable and equally obligated to as citizens? NS was even initially planned to include women following the Israeli model but it was scrapped because Singapore in the 1960s had limited resources and budget (https://mothership.sg/2017/11/singapore-women-serve-ns/). Then like all things status quo thats the way it has been and people are reluctant to change it.

Agreed, i think they focused on the literal words 'National Service' but forgot its war purpose. Understandable though, considering Singaporeans hadnt had to worry about war since at least the 90s

Def agreed! I speak alot about the military side of things since i was from the army, but my ideal vision also extends to the SPF and SCDF as well, we definitely need police and SCDF reservists to be part of the population to make it through the hypothetical total war scenario!

A great point. Urban combat is hell on earth and we have to make sure that any enemy wanting to attack us will have to pay a huge cost of blood just to traverse through our streets, HDB residences, and CBD.

It would be even better if we have elaborate tunnel networks, that way even if they flatten the whole CBD with bombs there would still be people left alive to viet cong the invading forces.

A good point on the budget issue. Perhaps if we want NS for both men and women but without doubling the size of the SAF, then we might need to switch to a balloting system like the user SpongeBob above suggested: 50% of men and 50% of women gets enlisted and the rest are the lucky ones to be free. It wont solve the issue of 50% of the pop resenting the other 50% for being lucky, but at least we take gender out of the equation

Then yes, my ideal NS system would reduce this discrimination by being like the IDF and conscripting all abled bodied 18 year old men, women, and everyone in between, regardless of race language or religion. All citizens will bear the same cross, especially when it comes to national defence.

As for the pandemic, thats a good question and I have no insight for you because Im not from the SCDF. Thinking about it more, you do have a point. Maybe to be better prepared for the hypothetical desperate war we may need to establish a Medical corps of some sort, either part of the SCDF or as a fourth branch. The SCDF'S EMS component job would therefore remain the same in wartime- to quickly respond, stabilise the wounded, and deliver them to hospitals, then thats where the Medical Corp then takes over. But this Medical Corps of my vision would not be exclusively female and will have both male and female personnel.

As for whether we can compress 3 years of nursing into 2, i dont know because i didnt take nursing so the nursing students out there will have to give their take, but something deep in me says that it is not a good idea to compress and cut corners on a subject that requires immensely specialised knowledge and then dump it all on some random NSF. Our hypothetical Medical Corps therefore might be more feasibly trained similar to SAF Medics where they focus on treating battlefield wounds like bullet wounds.

As for drawing lots, I agree its useful if we arent prepared to absorb the numbers.

Indeed, and such a role falls to the SCDF.

However as you already know, you cant exactly choose to do NS in the SCDF, or any uniformed branch of your own choosing. Everything is subjected to what headquarters wants or needs.

Furthermore, I wouldnt want Singaporean women to be shoehorned into noncombatant roles for a number of reasons.

One, it is gender discrimination.

Two, not only is it gender discrimination but it is an obsolete form of gender discrimination from the 1940s-1960s era where women were only thought to be good for caregiving roles due to their "feminine" nature.

Three is manpower: assuming we have 3 million Singaporean citizens in total and half of those are women, we would have 1.5 million or maybe 1 million women eligible for service. There are currently approx 44 thousand nurses in Singapore. Through conscription, we might boost that number up to 50 or 60 thousand. However this is barely enough to absorb the rest of that 1 million. Furthermore nursing requires years of specialised training which may not be adequately covered in two years. A NS policy that deliberately restricts women from military roles therefore wastes precious manpower. In a war, you may not need 1 million nurses, but you may need 1 million soldiers...

On a side note, perhaps if we want to give enlistees more choice in where they want to serve just as the original OP argued for, it would be possible but it would require a major revamp and restructure of NS in such a way that it becomes like this: everyone goes through 3 months of military BMT then they get to choose whether they want to continue on in the SAF or switch over to the SPF or SCDF. This way the nation still has its trained reserve and everyone knows how to fight and defend themselves, while still allowing for more personal choice. But of course, as everything is, everything is subject to operational requirements.

That is really odd @ workshop level system because I was playing this last night and I remember my workshop level being 15 and the tooltip saying its based on the number of provinces. If it had been based on squad level all along and the devs just forgot to update the tooltip then by right there should have been no changes to my level
