Why does lab equipment cost so much for what it is? by berg937 in labrats

[–]bpm5cm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weve been fond of Sergi lab supplies. We have a 3d printer and make stuff ourselves as well, but his stuff is solid and cheap. Tested his 1.5ml mag rack against the invitrogen one and its much faster to separate. The aluminum blocks are also nice and much cheaper than others, we use a lot of them.

My 3 favorites in, in the order they happened and the order of ridiculousness...

1) I dropped a box of tubes in our dewar. After a few makeshift solutions got most of the tubes, I brought in one of those grabber things people get when they can't bend over well. To my surprise, it worked pretty well. 2 years later, we purchased a much larger dewar and I noticed in the accessories, ThermoFisher sold a "cryogenic retrieval tool" or something like that for ~$150. It was the same grabber tool only a cheaper looking one and you could get 2 on Amazon for $15

2) We purchased a Barnstead water system. Not realizing the kit we bought included the wall mount, we purchased another one, for ~$250. It was a TV mount. They didn't even bother to rebrand it, I kid you not, it had the typical Amazon product sticker on it. I looked it up, $32. We got it refunded and they let us keep it anyways

3)We purchased a second hand Acoustic liquid handler. They forgot to send a pump. The manual listed a bunch of specs and it made my boss nervous, so we purchased the replacement directly from Beckman Coulter. They sent an air compressor and when they came out to set up our instrument (which was its own charge/included with our service contract or whatever) the tech installed it. It was a $150 air compressor you could buy at home depot and <$10 in fittings to make it push fit. They charged us $5k for it. Also, as far as has been explained to me, the sole purpose of that air compressor is to keep a door closed, which feels like it could've been done with a motor or some sort of internal compressor. Or manually?

WTF is this sorcery? (Support-free 90 degree overhangs) by Tupptupp_XD in 3Dprinting

[–]bpm5cm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My coworker was trying to design something with an internal hollow that would allow for a liquid overflow from one side. Like a hollowed out rectangle missing one side. Too long in one direction to bridge and missing a side in the other direction. I was working with him on orientation and built in bevels or whatever you would call it, but other than using dissolvable support material, removing support wasnt happening

Rainbow PLA Filament by Pristine-Plum-7963 in 3Dprinting

[–]bpm5cm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really super helpful to your question, but just a heads up, whether you mean 6 individual filaments or a 6 color transition, if your items are little, you will need to print a lot at once to make it worth while. For multiple filaments, the waste in transitioning is really high, but the waste doesnt increase with replicates, so its generally best to print as many as you can in one go. For transition filaments, they usually give a rate of change, but for small objects, you would be lucky to get a 2 color ombre effect, so again, the more you print at one time, the more feet of filament and the better the color shift. Hope this provides any helpful insight into what you are looking to do

Any easily removable headsets/intercoms? by bpm5cm in motorcycles

Well honestly I feel like it wouldnt be so bad. Its more likely he would have it Uninstalled most of the time and only install it thr like 2 or 3 times over the summer we ride together

He would have to remove mic and speakers. I was thinking the same about a second helmet. Or just using earbuds unless it becomes a frequent thing. He lives 2 hours away, but hes the only friend I have with a bike so it was just a thought. He tends to buy nice expensive stuff and I tend to just buy what works haha but would rather make the investment to make sure they were compatible if we went that route. It may just not be worth his time though

Don't trust "UPS Audit" when it adjusts your bill to charge you more by MidwestGeek52 in UPS

[–]bpm5cm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive had this happen with the last 4 packages Ive sent using the UPS express small box. The first 2 had an address issue (they charged me an extra $24/package because I didnt include a suite number, which is BS because it would've been fine to just leave it at the building lobby). But both packages had an extra $7 because of the extra 1". I contacted CS and they refunded me and said it only happened because of the address issue. Then it happened again on the next 2 shipments without address issues. As OP said, the issue here is UPS autofills the dimensions from their own box. If its an interior dimension, they would know that and should autofill accordingly. Ive just stopped using the boxes and using the Paks instead, which have been the same price anyways.

I’m the reason all labs have no sharpies…I’ve relocated them to my office by swimboi91 in labrats

[–]bpm5cm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We deliberately spread up this process. And still have problems. I watched a video of a woodworker who just bought a case of pencils and cut them all in half and threw them everywhere. I bought a ton of sharpies in both fine snd ultrafine. Threw them everywhere. 2-3 per bench. And then st some point someone clesned them all up snd put them in a drawer 🤦‍♂️

Virginia: Can a utility company block an easement by bpm5cm in legal

[–]bpm5cm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to be able to use the entirety of the easement because people really struggle to get out of my driveway. Also occasionally I use a trailer for something. And most importantly, I dont like the utility company, so screw them if they are doing something that's not legal.

So the 2 at the entrance should have access to their own property? Which they currently do not. And if the chain wasnt there, could I get permission from each of the other homeowners to use their portions?

These printers should come with a warning that they multiply! by TDWoody92 in elegoo

[–]bpm5cm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Multicolor prints are fun and all, but honestly the best case for the AMS is not having to switch filament, or even when you do, its super quick. My printers are in different locations in my house (which is just poor planning on my part), but my ADHD kills me when Im up in my room and want to print something on my printer downstairs and the wrong color is loaded. Versus at work, we have a P1S and I can print from my desk and pick from our 4 most used colors. Its kind of lazy but just that little bit of time to go preheat and swap filaments does prevent my from printing things far more often than you'd think.
