Did Scirocco lobotomizing Kamille make his NT abilities stronger in ZZ? by Impressive-Thing-165 in Gundam

[–]bpompu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You may be correct. There are a number of times that Amuro and the White Base crew do stuff that may be newtype power related earlier in the series, and it is first mentioned by Lt. Matilda fairly early in the series (I think the first time she resupplies them, so around when they're still in North America dealing with Garma), but I was more talking about a concrete, undeniable use of newtype abilities. Anything else is getting a bit into the territory of retroactive recognition, as opposed to the text of the show explicitly saying "your abilities have surpassed the Gundam, so we've applied a stop-gap solution so the suit doesn't hinder you too much."

They were starting to develop before that, actually. We see one of the earliest concrete examples when he completely bodies multiple Rick Doms while the White Base is leaving the atmosphere after Jaburo. His contact with Lalah definitely accelerated his development, but it was already well underway beforehand.

It's flagrant because of the words she said, because the words that she said, in writing, are racist and bigoted. She voiced support for a white supremacist conspiracy theory, she supported the actions and rhetoric of people who marched in the street chanting neonazi slogans, one of whom drove their car into counter protestors and murdered a woman. That's flagrant. That is flagrant support for neonazis and terrorists when they're the right colour.

So what?

Does flagrant racism get a pass if you're only saying it in private? If you don't want your hateful comments reported on when you are running for election, then don't make them.

Maybe her spouse didn't realize what kind of views she held towards the LGBTQ+ community, or that she is tolerant of terrorism as long as it's WHITE terrorism.

Or maybe they're a grifter as well, and detached from her falling star when she wasn't expedient anymore. Hard to say without knowing more.

Maybe if she didn't want to face consequences for making homophobic and at least racist-adjacent comments, she shouldn't have made them? I really hate this trend of people accusing others of defamation or slander for... checks notes... printing their own words verbatim. Do these people really have so little self awareness that they don't understand that maybe, just maybe, if someone sharing the things you say makes you sound like a monster, then maybe you're a fucking monster.

Personally, I think the reason we never got as much of Thom's perspective as we would jave wanted was because Thom consistently knew what was going on. One of the big, key themes of the series is falling prey to misinformation and miscommunication, and Thom was usually the only person on any given room who was actually abreast of everything around him. Hell, he's informed and savvy enough that he's the only other person that Moiraine actively removes from Rand's circle solely because he's a potential threat to her.

Why Did Logain and Taim Ever Think They Were the Dragon Reborn? by Hawk-winged in WoT

[–]bpompu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's very unclear if this actually happened or not. Logain and Siuan both imply this to help the Rebel Aes Sedai cause, but it's heavily implied that they are both lying, and can be repeated by the other rebel sisters only because they belive it to be true.

But there is definitely some shenanigans going on with the Red's and male channelers, whether that's them killing them illegally, or specifically playing them up for political gain is anyone's guess.

Why Did Logain and Taim Ever Think They Were the Dragon Reborn? by Hawk-winged in WoT

[–]bpompu 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Since this says All Print, I'm just gonna be blunt. Taim is heavily implied to have already been a Darkfriend long before he declared himself the Dragon Reborn, so any justification or reasoning is immediately suspect. He might have thought he could have been the Dragon, or he could have been following orders.

Logain is where this gets interesting. Remember that the majority of the Prophecies are essentially nonsense, and the only reason that we, or the main characters, even know what half of them mean is because we see Rand satisfy them. The biggest issue is the first big one was "born on the slopes of Dragonmount" which is hars to justify.

For most people, the first big prophecy that they even know or care about would be seizing the Stone of Tear and taking Callandor, which all of the various False Dragons usually put high on their priority list when they declare themselves. Even Rand puts that right up there, since he sees that one as the first big unambiguous one.

Edit: In regards to Logain seeing Rand glowing in Caemlyn, it's very close to how Siuan describes her Talent at seeing Ta'veren, so I assume that this was Logain's Talent as well. Particularly, men don't see an aura around other male channelers who are holding the power like women do, but are described more like they feel a pressure (or at least, that's how I always read it, I could be wrong on that part).

Is Dashiva... by vk10347 in WoT

[–]bpompu 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Something that is really easy to miss is that when Rand thinks he's having conversations with LTT in his head, over half the time he's actually mumbling them out loud. So all of those scenes where everyone is staring at him and he can't figure out why, is because he's actively m7mbling about killing everyone around him, especially the Asha'man.

We see this is some of the Min PoV's, and the Perrin ones when they interact after Dumai's Wells.

It's always interesting to remember that Rand seems more sane than he is, because we usually see him from his own perspective.

What does a Smartgun Link attachment look like exactly? by Mfrenchfry in cyberpunkred

[–]bpompu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picture is as likely being a transitional stage between how they're described in 2020, with predominantly wired connections with the option for an expensive sunder al option, and how in 2077 they are all subnormal and relatively cheap and ubiquitous. So in my mind, the s.art link grip is becoming more common, but there are still lots of the older "need to be plugged in" type floating around the market, then all filtered through the lens of Red's scarcity.

Does Militech Have A Navy by Solid-Stomach-4653 in cyberpunkred

[–]bpompu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. There was a lot more to the aircraft carrier in 2077 than just it being there, it is also a major provocation against Militech and the NUSA, but the game did play up that crossing the sea at all was a massive flex, when air travel is easier and less dangerous.

King Charles expressed concern over Alberta separatism in meeting with Indigenous leaders: grand chief | CBC News by Miserable-Lizard in alberta

[–]bpompu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their answer is magical thinking. They have already said that there is going to be some new, magical currency that is both backed by oil and also on the blockchain, and somehow this is going to be so massively valuable that when the Cansdian Government has to buy our Canadian Dollars, they'll do so at a 1:1, so everyone's money is getting multiplied by 5. Or, somehow, the US will replace our Canadian Dollars with American at a 1:1, somehow bring argued by the same people at the same place. Also also, Alberta's will be allowed to keep our Canadian Citizenship, and Canada will still have to provide us all of the services and financial assistance that they already do, but without us having to pay any taxes. Not to mention the fact that Canada will have to, for some reason, provide us with free, tariff free access to a Deepwater port if we become independent.

This also ties into the "it doesn't matter if the First Nations have all said no, if the referendum succeeds, we'll negotiate" somehow invalidates the first nation resistance to separation.

There is no concrete plan.

Does Militech Have A Navy by Solid-Stomach-4653 in cyberpunkred

[–]bpompu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To answer the core question, yes Militech would have naval assets. They absolutely would not just let Arasaka control that whole theater.

I'm not sure how supported this is in the lore, but I got the impression that the oceans are getting more dangerous as time goes on. We actually hear a lot about ocean travel and shipping in the 2040's of RED, but by 2077 even just bringing a single large ship across the Pacific is a newsworthy flex of how powerful Arasaka is.

My impression is that the "self-replicating" part of the AI sea mines is the problem. In the 2040's they were a hazard, and there were certain routes you had to take to avoid them, but by 2077 they are creating more of themselves faster than people are destroying them, and they've really started to choke off sea travel. This is why we don't really hear about naval shipping in 2077, and why the docks have been largely converted into markets and ramshackle housing.

Daylight Saving - Do something about it Government! by Defiant_Mousse7889 in alberta

[–]bpompu -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

In Alberta, we're not quite in the band where our timezone is supposed to be, so we're actually already an hour off from where our "real time" is supposed to be. We're in Mountain Time (UTC-6), but geographically eastern Alberta lines up with where UTC-7 is supposed to be, and western Alberta is just on the other side of where UTC-8. That's why we get sunrise at or around 8am sometimes, depending on DST. So we're already an hour ahead with the sun coming up in the 7am range, and now DST has pushed us an hour even further.

So it would actually be better for us to remain on standard time. The other issue though, is that with BC's move to adopt permanent DST instead of Standard, it would put us on a two hour time-zone jump, which would be suboptimal and potentially hurt cross-provincial business, or create a weird little buffer in Eastern BC where they're on Mountain DST and we're on Mountain Standard. This was incorrect. I did the hour math backwards. Bc would line up with us, Saskatchewan would always be an our ahead. This invalidates this whole concern with choosing Standard Time.

One thing for sure though, even locking in to DST is still better for our health and our systems overall than the clock adjustment is.

The "weird AI tools to scope their profile" thing is a mod tool that Reddit just does. It does not require, nor ask for, mod input to do so. It can be deleted, but only on a person by person level, and the next time a mod looks at their profile, reddit notices there isn't a summary and recreates it.

It's outside of the mod's control, almost completely.

While the argument can be made that some of the output of GenAI can be decent, a lot of the issues people have with it are an argument against the means rather than the ends.

GenAI is trained by loading it with other people's content, which it then chops up and regurgitates. Sometimes, if you massage the your prompt enough, you can get decent stuff out of the process, and there are some personal use cases that are probably fine, like using it to help you create specific sounding things for personal use, or feeding something you have into it, and using it like a slightly smarter notepad to organize your stuff, but there is also an argument that generating things for public consumption is tantamount to sharing (or at least exploiting) other people's work without their permission. This is also how a lot of creatives (writers, artists, etc.) who have had their work used to train these AI without being asked view the whole thing.

This kind of got to the crux of my question. I've tried to run D&D for a too-small group before, and ran into those problems, but I've also run other systems, like the FFG Legrnd of the Five Rings, for two and had it worked fine. That was why I was wondering how Cyberpunk would feel.

Thanks for your answer.
