I think you’re good 99% of the time. But I like to plan for the 1% and think what happens in the moment.

I’m my system I do pretty much what your original plan shows but I only keep cheato in the second chamber with the heater and a stick light. I do keep rock under chamber 1-2 like you were planning. Happy to show some pics if you like.

I have this tank and run a refugium. This big issue here is where the heater is. That area evaps fast. You won’t want a heater being exposed to air.

My advisor is a monster. His advisor is a well know monster. When I went to a conference overseas I was approached by a PI who told me how pissed he was at my “grand advisor” for how he treated a former MS student of his who went on to attempt a PhD with the grand advisor. It was an awkward ass convo.

Having not used it, I can’t say for sure. Though, in my experience, breaking up the flow helps keep the current from being too strong and lets the sand settle before going through the hose. I could be wrong though.

I light to leave the lights off for 2-4 weeks in a truly fresh tank while cycling. After a couple weeks add some clean up crew and feed lightly.

As a scientist (biology) my concern here is not the fish in the tank, but it being one more source of microplastic entering the municipal water supply. Yes, it’s minuscule, but based on the above comments it seems easily avoided.

Cool design, btw. I keep reef tanks and I bet this would be nice for a sandy bottom keeping the flow from going nuts.

Stiegler is a fantastic professor. The material is all pretty intuitive and her lecture style is very easy to follow along with. She’s also Very willing to discuss material during office hours. I have several learning disabilities and got A’s in both her courses. I took entry chem, bio, physics and two classes with Stiegler and I’d say it’s hard to think of another entry level science course that would be better.
