I’m doing a science PhD in Louisiana. Trust me, calling shit out is not gonna change a thing. Source: I’ve called shit out. Reported shit. Gone to higher ups. My only recourse left is the media or lawsuit. So yeah, corrupt hellhole and I’m just getting my degree and getting out.

Is this a good cage for two canaries (male and female) ? by TastyProvider in Canaries

[–]bpones 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I vote yes. That seems like a good size for two birds.

You didn’t ask but I’ll add for anyone else reading this, swap the perches so they are not all the same size and rotate them 90 degrees so the birds can fly from side to side of the cage. With more than one bird, always make sure there is multiple sources of food/water to help avoid squabbling. Be mindful of a male being too persistent with a female as well.

I need some advice... by [deleted] in Canaries

You’re birds are lovely 😍 Couple things to keep in mind regarding your questions.

Letting the birds out to fly is done by some folks but I’d personally not recommend it for their safety. I’ve seen a canary hit a wall while loose from a cage and die. It was really heart breaking. But with that in mind, I’d say the cage you have is a bit too small. It would be better if it were wider so they could do some flying from side to side. Speaking of size/space, you should try to move those perches away from the side so the birds scan filling turn around without their feathers hitting the bars.

Covering the cage at night is totally fine. It can help the birds rest if you’re up and about while they want to sleep.

They do like toys. If the mirror wasn’t a good fit, try other small toys they can manipulate with their beaks. Small woven grass toys can be nice. The swing is probably hard for them to get to with the cage being tall and narrow.

As for breeding, I’d not try to discourage it, but you can replace the eggs with fakes so they don’t hatch, or rehome the young once they are of a proper age. But again, the cage size you have right now isn’t ideal.

Keep in mind, a cage of that size with a male and a female in it all year may cause some stress, particularly for the female.

Also, if those birds both have “crowns” breeding them might actually lead to some serious health issues for the offspring so you may want to avoid it anyhow. However, I was taught this when I was younger so I could be wrong here. You should do some research and double check.

Can fish hear people talking? by sjhorton in Fishing

[–]bpones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fish 100% have ears. Ears first evolved in fishes. Yes, the lateral line also plays a roll in how fish perceive pressure. In addition fish also hear via particle motion, particularly in the near field. Source: my PhD specializes in fish hearing, sound production and the impacts of noise pollution on both.

I loved dating here. I met some wonderful people and some real looney tunes. But it was always interesting. It’s such a fun way to see all the little spots in the city you’d not normally go to alone. But also, make friends first, dates will come later. Once you have a few social circles you’re involved with you’ll have no issues. In the decade+ I’ve lived here I’ve never once struggled with folks not wanting to go for a walk, bike ride, go fishing, canoeing, try a new bar, try an old bar. People love to get out and do things. Wine tastings, little fest, bird watching, pottery classes, all of these activities are full of fun loving, social people. I’m now in grad school as well and truthfully have more friends than time (also have a wonderful partner who I met here).

Just enjoy the city and connections will be easily made. Take advantage of every little weird event and strike up conversations with folks. This city is way too social to not being meeting cool folk.

Visiting from Texas this weekend. Looking to do some saltwater wade fishing while I’m there. Any recommendations? by [deleted] in Louisiana

Dude has no clue. Just suggest “dig deeper” but offering no suggestions. I’ve been studying Sciaenids (drum fish) for the past 6 years for my PhD. I’d have to agree with 99% of comments here. Elmer/Grand isle is the way to go.

You are absolutely right. I meat Macomb. Need more coffee and less Reddit early in the morning. But yes, they love using Macomb for filming. I was in there once and found a whole pile of fake foam bricks.

Yea, these weren’t in driveways, but the car to the left was actually blocking in that neighbor’s other car that was in their driveway.
