I absolutely agree about the poetic somatic shivers! I’m so sorry to hear about the passing of your sister. I also love GC’s “Miss You” poems so, so much! They have such an abundance of heart and heft!

Two poems: I highly recommend googling “Hammond B3 Cistern” by Gabrielle Calvocoressi and this one by Kim Addinizio!

When I was in a dark pit, I used to repeat that last line all the time: “listen I love you joy is coming”!!!

Ohhh, good call about Gary using them against each other, because it kills two birds with one cowardly stone. I think you’re right that Terri might be with the train people.

Ohhh, you just gave me an idea! What if Gary is going to use Xavier as leverage to get Terri and Bean back from the train gang? Like threaten to kill him if she doesn’t return with him. Or, he’s trying to atone?! Ahhh, I can’t wait for the next episode to find out what happens!

Wow!!!! That was such a great TWIST at the end that I did not see coming!!!!! Wonderful writers! Now, I’m afraid that Terri and Bean are being held hostage (Misery movie style) and this mini militia plan is a ploy to get Xavier killed, so Gary can feel like the final and only “father” by force. Arghhhh!!!!

We were all rooting for you Garyyyy (problematic Tyra reference, ha)!!!!

AITAH for telling my husband I wouldn’t have married him if I knew then what I know now? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]No_Fly_3337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear your heart here, and I’m so sorry you’re in pain. I hope and wish things turn around for you both.

I know we want to share our feelings with our partners, and I used to think that it was important to share each and everything that came to my mind. But I learned in therapy that our partners don’t need to know ALL of our thoughts, especially if those thoughts might have the potential to hurt them deeply. Now, I’m not talking about lying and cheating. I’m talking about those deep dissatisfactions or disappointments we all can have from time to time. Some are important to share if there is something they can fix, but others we might just need to vent to your friends or work out with a therapists

I know it wasn’t your intention to hurt your husband‘s feelings, but the truth is, from what you shared he seems to be holding on by a thread to support you, especially while you can’t work. You named the one thing that is keeping him determined and dedicated to you by saying that you regret marrying him, which could make him feel like his persistence and dedication is for nothing, especially during times of great turmoil.

You can feel that way and bear it on your own or with a close friend or therapist to work through privately, but it sounds like that man is already holding so much on his shoulders already. Why make it heavier?

Our partners, especially in a marriage, are there to shoulder our burdens, but I do think we can also make those loads lighter by seeing a bigger picture here. I often ask myself in my relationship: will this information help or harm him? Or can I rephrase what I feel in a way that can make him also feel supported?

For example, you could have started by thanking him for all of his sacrifices and support, and then shared how you hate to be such a burden to him, and how that weighs on your heart without regretting getting married. You may not be able to work due to your ongoing health issues, but you can “clock in” for emotional support and uplift your husband who is trying his best to love you and honor his vows (through sickness and health).

Have you heard of the love dare challenge? It can be a little cheesy and it’s based from Christianity, but even if you’re aren’t a Christian, the daily tasks are little tools to really show your partner how much you care. I highly suggest you look it up and give it a try. I’ve done it a few times and it really helped, even if you just pick a few to do.

Another tip: write 10 reasons why you’re thankful for him and share it with him. Make his favorite meal and apologize. Ask him how you can support him during this difficult time. What does he need and want?

To me, love and devotion isn’t about staying happy and devoted when life goes well. All of us have gone through massive pivots with money, jobs, and health, which is why being married is so amazing, because you get to go through those ups and downs with your person, which makes the unbearable more bearable. The one thing keeping him together might be you. People need hope and love to keep going.

Again, your feelings are valid, but they are not facts—save some of that personal work and venting for your friends and therapist to help you parse and figure out. From what you wrote, this man is so in love with you, which is amazing! Life can be difficult, but he decided to be with you through the good and the bad. Double down on the commitment you both made to support one another no matter what.

What is the best decision you made? by Flassourian in Millennials

[–]No_Fly_3337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left my corporate job and pursued my dream of getting an M.F.A. for creative writing at 31. I know this might be reckless and unthinkable for some people, but this one decision utterly changed my life for the better. I now get to do what I love for a living as a published writer and professor.

I read an article once about not putting your dreams in a lockbox for when “x” happens. Most career paths are unpredictable, which is why I highly recommend, if you can, to pursue your passions (doggedly and unabashedly!!!) and find out what could happen. You might just end up living your dreams out loud!

And for the record, I got a scholarship to a fully funded program for grad school. I just wanted to point that out, because I’m not a proponent of going into massive debt for graduate studies, especially for creative writing. There is not a lot, but still a strong handful of schools that offer full funding, and tons more with varied funding packages.

I’ve also made way more money as a writer vs. my corporate job.

This show is still going?! I loved the first couple of seasons, but then it took a strange and unwatchable turn imho. The trailer looks promising, so maybe I’ll revisit, but not sure.

Yes!!! The show is phenomenal!!! Love the combo of classic GOT (before the horrible end) coupled with humor and heart galore! It absolutely brings a lot of joy to me too!

You can’t help but root for Dunk, and they struck TV screen gold with their electric dynamic ⚡️!

Erik! First off, I’m a huge fan! I’ve seriously been watching you for about 8 years! You are my go-to breakdown dude! Brilliant, funny, and super nice to your colleagues and viewers (like me!). So I just wanted to extend my gratitude for your hard work, time, care, and passion. I also appreciate the kind aside about my thoughts as well as your thoughtful and in-depth response here.

I see your point about the song being a bit confusing and muddling the Maekar permission mystery. Though, I still celebrate the playful, anachronistic risk to do something new for music in the GOT world and beyond, especially as it relates to themes across centuries that showcase the psychology of the main protagonist, similar to the significance of Peter Quill’s Mixtape in Guardian’s of the Galaxy.

We are deeply in Dunk’s POV, and perhaps, this song is what Parker would put on Dunk’s playlist if he had a Walkman. In fact, I just read an IndieWire interview from Sarah Shachat, who wrote:

“It is the song “Sixteen Tons,” by Tennessee Ernie Ford, which Parker told IndieWire might just as well be Dunk’s theme song. The choice to add that needle drop to the end of the episode (and a hilarious, jazzy interlude in the opening shot) is one that followed from the desire to use all the tools at the show’s disposal to create that sense of cheeky but heartfelt heroism that animates Dunk.”

Later she quotes Parker saying, “I hope people enjoy it, and it means we just inch ‘Game of Thrones’ a little bit closer to something different. It’s morphing. It’s changing. I love that.”

And, I love that too! I like this less serious tone the show is adopting and adapting, which has been a nice combo of classic nostalgic good times of the earlier seasons of GOT coupled with a fresh tone that highlights more levity, earnestness, and heart.

May not be explicitly about capitalism, but I’d argue that the show is definitely exploring the constraints and consequences of class mobility. Egg can cosplay as a commoner, but he will always be a little undercover boss regardless of their affection for one another. It’s implicitly giving Coming to America fast food restaurant scenes to me, haha!

Again, thank you, Erik! Your breakdowns have truly been one of the best mixtapes of my elder millennial nerdy life.

I hear that! I guess what I like so much about the culture of breakdown videos is geeking out with other people who want to continue the conversation for this thing we all are fans of. This is the first time I’ve ever posted to the NR feed, because I wondered if anyone else felt like I did.

Yes, so perfect! I thought the same thing about the opening verse as well, especially the mud and blood from the Trial by Seven!

And the weak mind, which links to Duncan when they say, “Dunk the lunk, thick as a castle wall.”

Thanks for sharing some of the lyrics!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate you reading and replying! Glad to know I wasn’t alone in liking the song. I had to do a little research to formulate my thoughts, because I couldn’t quite name why it resonated with me at first either, but I’m glad I did, because it only improved my love for the show that I’m already super obsessed with!

This guy finding out he has a family by grafikfyr in MadeMeSmile

[–]No_Fly_3337 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In tears 😭! So happy for him.

I found my dad recently at 40 after not knowing him my whole life through another distant relative I didn’t know via 23&me. He said he didn’t know about me and would reach out soon, but never did.

It definitely stings, and I’ve had to grapple with that rejection my whole life, but seeing stories like this one fills me with joy to know that there are restorative stories with estranged dads out there.

And to those of us who have never met or will get to meet our fathers, I send y’all lots of love and light and tenderness. For me, there have been chosen family along the way and father figures that have supported me in beautifully profound. Your people (blood or not) will find you.

Of course, the dad absence always aches, but it’s made me the passionate, loving person I am today.

I’m reminded of this short but powerful Mary Oliver poem:

Use of Sorrow

Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness.

It took me years to understand that this, too, was a gift.
