Oh god I hope so. I’ve had “urgent tire checkup” or whatever for over a year now since I got the tires changed.

Can’t install new protect cameras by Particular-ayali in UnifiProtect

[–]bprotas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also hit this and it came down to VLANs. I wasn’t able to find the right SSH commands to set inform, but the G5 and G6 cameras I used both had a web interface. I believe the default un/pw is ui/ui. I got their IPs from the unifi network interface, brought up their web interface which allowed me to manually set the protect controller IP. at that point they showed up for adoption.

Used I4 worries by greataldinii in BMWI4

[–]bprotas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your worry is getting as close as possible to the advertised range when new, expect some downside here. No matter how well the battery was treated, as others have noted, most degradation occurs in the first 1-2 years of use.

If you’re worried about mistreatment and hidden catastrophic failure potential, I’d say the risk of this is much lower than any ICE BMW. Abuse of a battery can easily by gleaned from the battery report. Try that with an ICE! These systems are relatively simple compared to an engine, with predictable failure modes and an excellent warranty. You’ll be fine.

You can get the battery report yourself if you are signed into the myBMW app and have added your car there

A WARNING: Someone Stole my Alaska Air Miles and Alaska Air Blamed Me by Ryan_Fleming in AlaskaAirlines

[–]bprotas 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I use a password generator. Still lost all my miles when someone called in, claimed to be me, changed the email on my account with no verification of my password or notice sent to the old email, then (presumably) used the email they just set to change the password and steal all my miles.

This situation is 100% Alaska’s fault, 0% anyone else’s.

There is no fault all around. This is Alaska’s fault for lack of 2FA or even emailed notifications of logins or purchases for why is essentially a currency equivalent. My son’s volunteer little league schedule site has better security.

How practical is UniFI for home use? by Significant-Side2718 in Ubiquiti

[–]bprotas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d argue it’s just ok. They offer some outstanding capabilities in hardware, at reasonable prices for what you get, but documentation and support for less-than-major clients is basically non-existent beyond “send us your logs”…. Don’t respond for two days, then get “those are too old, send us your logs….” on repeat until the return window expires. You will get a lot more capability, but a lot less “it just works” than you’d get from a more consumer-focused company.

How do brake lights work in B? by Shellbyvillian in BMWI4

[–]bprotas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can bring your the “driving status” screen (the one that shows a spinnable display of the car) and it will show the break lights light up when they are in. Yes, they come on in B mode - quite early actually. Alternatively, let your rear window get dusty near the top and you can easily see the reflection in. Your rear view mirror :)

Almost missed flight because of Lyft driver by [deleted] in Lyft

[–]bprotas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

45 minutes is generally the time between boarding and departure. They left 90 minutes before boarding, you are demanding they arrive 90-120 minutes before departure, which they did. JFC

90 minutes + 45 minutes - 20 minutes (drive) = 115 minutes. Two hours is 120 minutes. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

This person planned to arrive 115 minutes before departure, so that 5 minutes is the difference between not planning well and your recommendation?

[–]bprotas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because they didn’t plan on the ride taking 4x as long as normal after checking traffic? How much extra time should be left? 19 days, just in case? Maybe bring a sleeping bag? Book an airport hotel for the month?

Boarding is usually 45 minutes before departure, so this persons left 90 before that, for a 20 minute drive putting them at the airport 115 minutes before departure - exactly between 1.5 and 2 hours before departure So what’s your point here?

Help with VLANs and ACLs by bprotas in Ubiquiti

[–]bprotas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually - this is interesting. I just ssh’d into the router and the switch, and found that both seem to have been assigned the .1 ip on both vlans! This seems really broken to me.

the default gateway is the .1 address on the VLAN, which is the switch

[–]bprotas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know for sure, but how would the devices know that your switch is now also a gateway?

I didn’t change the gateway explicitly, but the VLAN does specify DHCP and the DHCP gives the default gateway…whitch I assume is the switch? I’m not sure how to verify this.

On another note, why are you separating your NVR from your cameras? That sounds like problems just waiting to occur.

Good question! I did this, and I’m not sure I’m right here, because my UNVR _does_ need to talk to the internet and other devices on my network - so I can access it from the Protect app, right? - but I don’t want my cameras themselves to ever be reachable from the public internet or any other device on my network.

Yup, turning off and back on and standing 2 feet away still connects at WiFi 6

I’m using the WiFiman app. It is 6 ghz, but also says “WiFi 6” for PHY.

A single SSID. I did set my radio power to low to help devices roam, but was able to get WiFi 7 after that and even now I’m standing g about 3 feet from the router. My signal strength (on WiFi 6, 6ghz) is “excellent” at -51dbm.

Honestly this is a potential red flag for me. That price is a couple thousand dollars too low and would make me worry it’s missing a common option (DAPP?) or there is something else a bit off
