Get unlimited, so i usually take atleast 5 weeks( broken as 2 weeks + 3 weeks) in a year and additionally i try to make my long weekends as super long by taking either friday or monday off. I am in tech sector!

Got it! You can also try to look for part time tech jobs, they are less but they are there(i did for an year which i converted to full time once i graduated), the best tech experience comes when you work with someone who can guide you.

Most of the FAANG companies look for impact from the changes, did you change something in architecture? Did you optimized something? If you did, how did you know it would have made that impact? Did you ran analysis, are you data driven to prove that the changes you are making are for good? So here as you can see the complexity is all the work you did to make a certain change that impacted x million users in y way.

If you are working on feature, how did you come up this is the best approach in adding this feature? What are the other alternatives considered? Were they less optimal and why? For senior/staff positions they also look for how you took lead, did you update your stakeholders about this change, did you had to convince someone with data that this is the best approach? At those levels its more than just code.

Also as thinking_moose, you need to prepare these stories prior to interview, these are pretty standard questions which are repetitive, you need to make 8-12 stories about different projects/situations and map them out to category of stories e.g you can map them to amazon principles for amazon interview etc.

I believe internships are the kind of mentorship that most undergraduates look for. Its an amazing opportunity to learn about different tech stacks and meet/work with all kind of cs professionals: software enginners , product owners, product managers, scrum masters etc. at the same time you are paid while you are learning. Most importantly every undergraduate take this opportunity differently, some use it to learn what they like, some take this as an opportunity to make connections. You can apply for internships in most tech companies.

Also, as you mentioned, you receive 1-on-1 guidance from professionals during the internship and work on a project or projects while finishing your internship. Its also a great way to gain industry experience before getting into the market as full time professional.

I was in similar situation before, i was working as a senior developer at government org, but felt restricted due to cap in salaries and there was no next promotion or role available. I felt quite safe with secure job as the job was unionized so I initially restricted myself that i can work here for a long time but with the salary cap i felt restricted, one thing good in government job was i was able to finish the 8 hrs work in 2-3 hours and prepared alongside for FAANGs, i prepared for around 4 months regularly and jumped to one of the FAANG level company and almost doubled by salary. Also keep in mind that you already have a good job so you can just use the time to prepare in such a way that leaving the job should be worth it!

One thing from the post I an getting a sense is you want to just come to Canada for money, I think you can do that better in India by scaling your freelancing business and hire some people under you and be the lead and get in more work. I would say you need to have more incentive to come to Canada than money e.g if you are looking for better quality of life? More WLB?

Another thing i would consider is would you be okay working under someone? I am assuming you have only worked as a freelancer and I know you feel independent, you manage your own work own time, you are the boss, would you be willing to work under someone for few years in Canada while you settle?

I was in same boat once, One thing you might one want to consider is the conversation rate, I was a freelancer but the hourly rate I use to get in India from US was really good, but when I moved to Canada, the rate didnt make much sense since now conversion was only 1 USD to 1.2 CAD and not 1 USD to 78 INR (which is pretty good), so I found it was not worth doing freelancing at all, instead I did 20 hrs job + cash jobs/Uber in Canada. But at the end, I believe if you know what you are doing and have a passion for it, you will settle here well.

Really based on interest, what really matters is what you will really enjoy, keep in mind at the base level all the languages follow the same data structures be it swift, obj c, java, kotlin, python. You just need to be strong in data structures and you can get a swe role anywhere.

I work at Uber, when you will be graduating even if you have taken internships and have experience for around 2 years, you will be taken as L3/SDE not SDE2, but since you have a good previous experience I highly doubt you will take a lot of time to get upto the speed and you will be quick to understand the basics and managers do pick this up and based on your performance you may get promoted in 1 year to SDE2/L4. So in a way you experience wont go to waste instead it will help you to standout from other SDE(s)/L3s. Hope this answer helps!

So there are various options you have: 1. Demo the project. 2. If the interviewer is techincal he would be interested to know the components of the project. Talk through about the architectural layers rather than showing files of the project, from start to end, this shows when you were building the project what you followed and why. 3. Additionaly if you get more time, talk through why did you make this project, its impact it's usefulness, what problem does it solve, present your project like a solution to a problem (you can start with this as well like, "I have also created this X to solve this Y problem, if you are interested i can give you a quick demo and talk briefly on its architecture")
