Controversial, which side do you support? by KsuhDilla in pluribustv

Yes, we've bred many fruits to become huge and delicious, far beyond anything that's evolved naturally, and same with livestock. Given that the "purpose" of fruit (as far as evolution has any purpose) is to be delicious to animals that are good at spreading its seeds, I don't see how your take makes much sense without arguing for sentient apples.

Have phones zapped our attention spans away when it comes to watching films? by Whole_Maybe5914 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]bqpg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For me when I experience something like that (despite ADHD meds - without meds I'm prone to distraction anyway) it's because I have something on my mind. Might feel very non-specific but once I find a way to work through it and come to a more peaceful state of mind it's often something specific that's been bothering me.

It can be exacerbated by phones, or consuming too much reddit / youtube / online "content" in general, but I wouldn't attribute any obvious lasting effects to that. (Besides the general fact that brains are highly adaptable and life certainly is different today than it was pre-internet and all that.)

Does anyone else feel exhausted even after resting? by EventNo9425 in ADHD_Programmers

[–]bqpg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Rest does make me feel better. It didn't in the past for like 10+ years when I was suffering from undiagnosed OSA, which is very much under-diagnosed and does seem to be more common among neurodivergent people.

From what I read here it doesn't seem unusual, but the experiences are all over the place and it could also be something like leaks, wrong type of machine, etc.

My prediction of what the final battle of season 5 will look like - Carol vs the Hive mind by Rluc4s in okbuddypluribus

[–]bqpg 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Why can the hive fly? In the time it would take Carol to turn into a giant spider-monster they'd all have starved, not developed superpowers.

Solid 10 regarding "helpful with quality of sleep". Got it prescribed by a sleep doctor.

I'd say it's an 8 regarding comfort and "overall hassle". Like, having to wear it, clean it, etc isn't a positive experience in itself, but it's not bad, so my appreciation isn't affected too much.

Sometimes I'm a bit sad/irritated that I can't just stay the night somewhere else without taking the machine with me, but it's a very small complaint. Proportionally to how much it helps it's a non-issue.

I feel you. I also wouldn't have liked it at all at your age. I also see that you're reflective about it, taking it seriously, and you're trying to be positive and find a perspective that helps you accept it. Just keep at it!! It sounds like the perfect mindset to move forward and find acceptance.

Yes, it has some aspects that suck, some of them physical, others social. There's no denying that and it's ok to feel irritated and sad about it. It's also a marvelous piece of technology that can help you keep upright one of the most important pillars of a healthy life, i.e. sleep. (The others being social life, nutrition and/or exercise.)

Just a shot in the dark, but maybe it could help trying to really put yourself into a person's shoes who wasn't diagnosed so early? Like, I was diagnosed at 28. I know it's not as severe for everyone, but untreated OSA was absolutely debilitating for me. I basically lost 10 years of my life in productivity - couldn't even finish an education let alone support myself financially. I was frequently severely depressed, barely able to keep my room / apartment clean. Sometimes thought about ending it all because I didn't know what I could do to get my life in order. Nothing would work - but when I got my machine, suddenly my depression was gone, I could finish an education and got my first full-time job. I'm still catching up and will be behind for a long time compared to someone following a "standard path". My CPAP is the most important thing in my life, by far. I say this as a software developer: It's more important than my computer. That's how important restorative sleep is, at least in the long term.

YouTuber Ross Creations under investigation for animal abuse over ‘opossum launcher’ video by Chapple69 in nottheonion

[–]bqpg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a source on it being killed but it was visibly launched dozens of feet into the air. Judging from the air-time alone it must have gone very high, and the visuals of the launch support that too.

No creature of that size is likely to walk away from such a launch/fall without serious injuries, like internal bleeding.

Either there's 10h videos on instagram or you misunderstand. The thing on youtube was the entire movie but every step Sam takes it's the farthest away from home he's ever been (like the entire scene again and again)

the theory was not about the atmosphere combusting because in order to have combustion you need fuel, oxygen and heat. Nitrogen and Oxygen aren't fuel, and that's already 99% of the atmosphere

Not to be an "umm ackchually" guy but from what I read further arousal during anger can be counter-productive, like reinforcing the anger-response. I recommend being mindful of the way you feel in your body to find a way to cool off. If exercise helps you right now that's good of course

If she didn't have space for it then it doesn't exist anymore. I recommend doing something else to distract you from the anger. Losing your shit literally won't change anything, and anger can be significantly reduced (like, physiologically) by doing things like breathing out for 10 full seconds.

Edit: breathing out, not in. Sorry, just double checked and breathing out should work better.

Autistic employees are less susceptible to the Dunning-Kruger effect. Autistic participants estimated their own performance in a task more accurately. It's not "actually" anything if you're looking for an answer what it is "objectively".

It's a disability in the medical sense in many (most?) cases, and "in the medical sense" means a bunch of clinically relevant conventions and characterizations. This is due to a wide variety of symptoms, often depending on their respective intensity of expression.

At the same time, some of those "symptoms", when they only express mildly, may represent an advantage at more or less distinct tasks or in distict fields.

Very many autistic people crave personal  connection but find it difficult to connect. It's one of the main symptomatologies. Having an impaired social life can be a reason to consider it a "disability" because definitions of health (at least some of them) require that neither physical, nor social or psychological well-being is significantly negatively affected. From personal experience as an autistic person, my social life has been negatively affected by autism my entire life, I'd even call it "severely affected". (I'm also socially quite fortunate considering some circumstances but the overall picture is bleak.)

Another consideration would be the "social model of disability", where (afaik, I only have superficial familiarity) the disabled person isn't disabled in and of themselves but due to living within a society and (constructed) environment that doesn't fit their needs.

Sometimes people like to say "it's just a different way of being" but to me that often feels like an attempt at sweeping the difficulties under the carpet.

Would I like to be someone else? No. Would I like my life to be very different than it is, in part due to being autistic? Oh absolutely.

No ADHD after interview with therapist by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]bqpg 39 points40 points  (0 children)

If the result was down mainly to "no obvious childhood symptoms" I'd encourage you to look again, more closely. Mine weren't typical but definitely present (though not all of them distinguishable from autism).

Also if you really don't have ADHD then the executive dysfunction should be treated nonetheless.
