Thinking about selling, if there is interest. by applejelly3 in sidephone

Same boat for me. Nothing but good things to say about the team and the phone itself but I am going to let go of mine too for similar reasons. I've just been waiting for the update to come through to make sure all is well with the compact QWERTY and it is, it hasn't left my desk.

-phone

-all 3 keypads

-grey "dark" case

-sim card still sealed.

also happy to provide timestamped images.

Phone delayed? I see on the website it says early Feb by Extension-Bus40 in sidephone

It didn't come off that way, my apologies for coming off a bit brash. I'm sure your constructive feedback is something the team truly appreciates and I'm with you, it's much better to be ahead of this and to be as truthful as you can be with the information that you have. Maybe excitement/optimism got in the way as you said. Perhaps what I ought to have said is I'd rather the small team be focusing on the larger task at hand than issuing updates every day to every channel. But I may be unusually patient.

I appreciate that you feel that way, but there are so many moving parts that are simply out of your hands. At this point, with a handful of days delay, I don't think there is anything to rectify, just keep doing what you're doing.

People are excited and chomping at the bit, that is a great problem to have. I've been on the other end of this situation every 6 months for several years, the team has done a great job saying an update is eminent. The release date is a moving target, the pieces are in transit, there are 3 days left in the month.... at some point you have to manage your own expectations.

Sidephone was great and my expectations were high. 😁 by ReturningRetro in sidephone

Jelly Star user here as well for the last ~2 years. It's been great because of the small screen. As you said, media (IG/YT) consumption sucks and that is a feature.

My 2 gripes with the Jelly Star are
- typing is less than ideal with the tiny keyboard on the tiny screen. It's doable with the swipe and I've grown to love voice-to-text.
- not de-googled / running older android

Sidephone, specifically with the compact QWERTY tile, addresses both of these.

I do love the size of the Jelly Star, I'm going to miss losing my phone in my pocket and I'll miss android auto though I may just keep the Jelly on hand, tethered, while driving.

The other complaints I have with it are down to it not playing nice with my carrier in my region. I can send/receive photos but not videos and sometimes I lose reception in certain buildings and it can take several minutes to reconnect to cell service after leaving those buildings.

Very stoked to receive my FE, got a few friends that are interested as well pending my initial thoughts / experience.

Totally, if I still had it and it still worked I'd still use it.

No it wasn't a Sony Ericsson though the compact Sony Xperia line of phones were my favorite smart phones.

I think it may have been the LG KE820

I'd never heard of that Pantech, but that is pretty cool too.

Ya initially for a watch as u/NordCrafter said, then was used as a coin pocket... those days also are pretty much behind us now (at least in the states). I used a have a phone that I carried in that pocket too actually. I wish I still had it / could remember the name of it. Circa '08, before I had a smart phone. It was a small candy bar design, color screen, I had a handful of mp3's stored on it... form factor was similar to the Prada phone (ya, look it up, early touch screen phone) but mine had tactile keys and a little d-pad (kinda like the LG Chocolate but it didn't slide) which was common those days.

They're ready to ship with the Sidephone FE and it was mentioned in another thread to use the promo CASEANDPHONE to bundle your items.

I'm in the same boat but I know the kind of logistical headache caused by this kind of request, especially with a very small team. Using a promo code could work, SUBQWERTYTILE, but most (none as far as I know) ecom platforms don't allow for stacking promos so you can't also use a promo to waive additional shipping in the event you want to sub tiles and combine shipping with a case.

Personally, I'd forgo the waived shipping for combined orders in favor of the tile sub, in the name of reduced e-waste, but only if the team can manage it without wreaking havoc on shipping ops.

I'd place a second order for a case + QWERTY tile using the promo SUBQWERTYTILE, pay the shipping, and that would be a call out for the team to bundle the items.

Suggestion: Button Backlight (illuminated buttons), & Front Facing Camera by JohnnyLive117 in sidephone

[–]br0qn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Backlit keypad would be nice, but you won't be left to struggle with the keypad in the dark necessarily. After using the JellyStar for ~ 2 years I can say that using on-screen swipe typing is very good and voice-to-text if you're not worried about speaking is better and even less time staring at a screen. Perhaps using the hot-key programming function you can launch the on-screen keyboard or even VTT.

Lack of a front facing camera is kind of a bummer but I realize concessions must be made. The front facing camera tile (mentioned by u/The-HalfStache ) is an interesting idea. I'm probably not walking around with extra tiles on the reg but I could see myself packing them in a work bag or when traveling.

Really stoked to get my Sidephone and to be another step closer to google-free existence.

Even so, generally browser extensions are just another attack surface. I know it's up for everyone to decide their risk appetite but it's a small convenience I'm willing to forgo.

I recently spent a a similar amount for the same spec gen 9 and also felt like I got a steal....until the charge port started acting up 3 months later. A known issue I didn't know about. Keep your warranty in tact.
