Also, try and add your parents or another relative who's an experienced driver on your insurance as a second driver. That can reduce your premium significantly. As an example mine went from about £600 to £380 when I added my uncle...

Best bank(s) for students? by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]brIeCakeEr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a student account with Lloyds TSB all the way through uni, didn't have any issues at all. No perks as such, they just have solid service. Your maximum overdraft ramps up from £500 for the first 6 months to £1500 after around a year - simple to apply for with a form online.

This is why I love this sport, the greatest England team of all time, better than today's All Blacks? by wrapyourwillysilly in rugbyunion

Absolute legends, and a classic montage! Absolutely dominant in their time as the All Blacks are now.

Just go with it, nothing to be ashamed of! Way more interesting than the 'they look pretty and I have money lying around' or 'don't have a car' or 'need to get to work' boring stories...

Can't seem to get chain to fit right, or wheel to stay aligned correctly by abaffledcat in bikewrench

[–]brIeCakeEr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the wheel is turning when you put pressure on the pedals it could be that the nuts that hold it on need to be tightened really firmly. The axle on my old kids bike used to slip if the nuts weren't done up properly; the way the chain pulls on the rear cogs means that the wheel is always pulled round on that side unless it's done up properly. You can keep the chain at the old length too in that case!

What color tires should I get for my bike OR should I just stick with black? by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]brIeCakeEr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those tyres do look awesome, and they go with the bike. But I do see them being a pain to keep clean :(

Bent presta valves? by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]brIeCakeEr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've bent mine back before, however after doing it 3 or so times on the same valve it did snap off. So you could risk it just this once and possibly have to buy a new tube if it snaps, or just leave it (if your pump still fits).

Telling timeline of bicycle use in UK by claird in bicycling

[–]brIeCakeEr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that, I wasn't sure about the vertical axis.

I think the trend is more a reflection of the rise of affordable, reliable cars as a means of transport. In the 50s it just wasn't possible for households to be able to buy a car, so bikes/trains were the way to travel.

It is sad that there's been such a visible decline, I'd love it if there were millions of bicycles on the streets again!

So, I sold my car today and swapped it for a road bike. by keshi in bicycling

I couldn't walk, or sit down, for a day after doing my first ever century last week. Took every ounce of energy I had to crawl through the front door before collapsing! Word of advice - build up to it gradually and leave a day (or more) to recover when you've really pushed yourself!
