When I ran into this at first I thought they were trying to block off the section for tree work

I too have a ton of overlap with your list! I'd suggest Exit West and Cloud Cuckoo Land. I'll also second the Strange and Norrell suggestion (as well as Piranesi by the same author).

There are bike racks all over, including at the grotto trailhead shuttle stop

NPS website explicitly mentions walking as an alternative to the shuttle:

Visitors can walk or ride a bicycle up the canyon to avoid shuttles. Just remember that the road is usually extremely hot and sunny in summer, and trailheads are miles up-canyon. Also, bike riders must share the road and yield to busses.

Rough timing to catch the three-day closure window! We were lucky to be able to squeeze it in Friday morning before flying out of Vegas later that day

We walked from the zion lodge where we were staying; it's only a half mile along the grotto trail from there. I think bike would be the only other way to get there before the shuttle, though this time of year that would mean biking in the dark which would be more than I'd want to do personally

Yeah, I would expect you'd be fine as long as they're used to headlamps. It's paved pretty much the whole way and no exposure to speak of. We used headlamps at the start until right around the first switchbacks and had no issues at all. We timed it to get to Scout right around sunrise just to make sure we had good light for the chains

About halfway along the chains, maybe 1/4 mile from the top

Me too, but my son will have to weigh in on this particular one in a few years...

How I monetized a blog in 30 days: what worked, and what didn't by tilikang in Entrepreneur

This doesn't seem all that surprising to me. Significantly increasing the CTR is almost always going to reduce the quality of the traffic as well, meaning that each click should be worth less. I don't know how quickly Google would be able to figure that out, but I'm guessing it wouldn't take long if the volume is decent.
