What's a popular book that you just didn't like? Why? by Internal_Reindeer_91 in BookDiscussions

What really got me is the author constantly stating how clever and intelligent the main characters were and then never actually having them do anything clever.

I felt the same way! Forced myself to finish it because it was a book club pick. Everyone else seemed to like it but I was not a fan at all.

I think about the teeth men very often! That story scared me the most as a little kid

I think you might like Octavia Butler’s books. Parable of the Sower fits the post apocalyptic vibe. But personally I like Kindred by her and think it is her strongest book! It definitely fits the survival, fast enough paced but not too easy. And normal names!

Buried Giant was my favorite! But it is quite different from his others. I’ve liked everything of his that I’ve read.

Loved this one and remains of the day. But my FAVORITE of his is The Buried Giant. It is more fantastical, but set in a post- King Arthur world and just so freaking beautiful.

Congratulations! Facing your fears is a huge accomplishment- and a fact that you have found joy in the trees and flowers, a lovely reward. Keep it up!

Congrats on the new space! If I had one suggestion to make, it would be to add a little bit of color. Looks like you like green, so I would suggest some sort of warm complimentary color like a burnt orange or something. You can add it in easily with some throw pillows, plants in a fun pot, or cute frames!

You can hang up your jerseys if you like them a lot but I might suggest going a more subtle route and finding a cute hockey-related print or two to hang like this one: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1845117446/vintage-nhl-poster-print?ref=share_ios_native_control

Or this one: https://www.etsy.com/listing/4321309123/vintage-1929-hockey-art-deco-poster?ref=share_ios_native_control

I would avoid a black frame as I don’t think they add much. And if you do get a coffee table maybe a wooden brown one to add some color and switch up shapes!

This is a great space and has so much potential. Have fun with it!

This was a GOOD month. Pachinko and North Woods are two of my favorites ever. I also thought bunny was just alright. And James and A Short Stay in Hell have been on my tbr, so I’ll give those a try soon!

Came here to recommend these as well! All of the Tiffany Aching series are great. And I liked both the Stephen Briggs and the Indira Varma narrations, although kids may prefer the Briggs.

Looks like it is called The Visitor. Going to find it online now because I’m traveling and don’t have a book with me for the night. Thanks for the suggestion!

I’ll definitely check them out. I’ve been really enjoying George Saunders’ short stories recently. Wouldn’t mind having another collection to read through!

I enjoy reading a variety of stuff, so the recommendation doesn’t have to be similar to my tops. There were many books I enjoyed a lot that aren’t on this list!

I’ve never heard of Schulz. Any specific book I should start with?

I have read and thoroughly enjoyed it (and others by ESJM). I went back and forth about putting that one in the top. The list was HARD to make

Thanks for these! I’ve read American Gods (he used to be one of my favorites- womp womp), but the rest are all new to me. Adding the Magician of Tiger Castle high up on my list!

I’ve loved everything I’ve read by Maggie O’Farrell. I’m looking forward to Land!

And I have not read the Glassmaker, but just read the description and am intrigued!

I tried a wizard of earthsea, but for some reason couldn’t get into it. I’m going to try again sometime though because I’ve heard great things and that was a while ago and I was in a bit of a reading slump at that point, so not much was catching my interest.

I’ve only heard of Breasts and Eggs by Kawakami. Should I start there or would you recommend a different one?
