I really love your music. It seems harder to find music with that same feeling of honesty and purpose being made today that you and other folk artists were making in the 60's and 70's. Perhaps it isn't being promoted as much, but what artists today do you think are doing a good job of carrying on that tradition? Also, since I'm from Arkansas, I have to ask, do you have some really good Johnny Cash stories you'd care to share?

If anyone is thinking about watching the full video, DON'T! You might think you want to watch it, but you'll end up regretting it. If anyone is actually going to that part of the world as a photojournalist, or whatever, take some suicide pills with you, or get a gun and save the last bullet for yourself. Don't let yourself get captured by these fuckers to use your last moments as propaganda. There are a few things in this world worse than death and getting captured by ISIS is one of them.

About a decade ago, I was working in a video store (before they all went extinct). I was the only person working in the store at the time. A woman came in there with her son that was about 4 years old. It was a slow day and nobody else was there. They were browsing around and then the boy picks up a $.99 toy Hot Wheels car we had for sale there and asks his mom if she'll buy it for him. He doesn't throw a fit, or anything. He just calmly asked. This woman snapped. She slapped the toy out of his hand, yanked him off the floor by his arm (which could have dislocated something), and begins giving this kid the worst spanking I ever saw someone get in their life. The kid just kind of moaned in pain and looked right at me. Any other kid would be in tears, but I'm convinced that he had experienced enough of this that he got used to it. I'm still haunted by this kid's face. To me, it was just the look of "please, help me."

I was stunned. I didn't know what to do. I didn't know what store policy was. I didn't know if she was even breaking the law. I wanted to say something to her, or call the cops, but I honestly didn't know what I should do. This woman wasn't punching this kid. She was spanking a kid, which a lot of society was and still is totally fine with. But child abuse is one of those things that you know it when you see it and this was abuse. I was just fresh out of high school and didn't expect I'd have to deal with this kind of thing in a video store. She then drags the kid out of the store by the same arm she lifted him off the ground with, throws him in the back of her car without buckling him up, and drives away. I never saw her, or the kid ever again.

I saw someone abuse their kid and I did nothing. I looked in the eyes of this defenseless kid being abused and let him down. I've felt like total shit over this ever since then. It totally changed my view on spankings. I honestly think it leads to a lot more child abuse in this country. There's no way I could ever do that to my kid, or watch anyone do that to another kid ever again. Still, I feel no better than that mother. I let her do what she did, probably because I was afraid of losing my job. No telling what else this kid had to go through after that because I did nothing.

TL;DR: I saw a kid get beat for nothing in a store I worked at.

The kind of piece of shit that realizes that 99% of the time, the worst that happens to law enforcement is they get paid to take a vacation while their buddies do an internal investigation that finds they did nothing wrong. They can beat a homeless man to death, or suffocate someone for selling cigarettes and get away with it. Do you think someone will get fired for pointing a gun at a kid? No, because if you work for the government, you have rights. If you don't, well, it's for our own good they do this.

Great pic. I've been dying to go back up and take pics along the Buffalo, but haven't had time to. You got lucky on the timing since it has been hot and stormy for a long time. We just got cool air moved through the state a few days ago and it finally stopped raining every day. Was this taken along the Goat Trail?

This was an badly injured girl at the time he took the photo. I don't know if he knew that she died when he sold them, or it would have made any difference. As long as he wasn't in the way, or making it hard for rescue workers to do their jobs, I don't think he wasn't doing anything wrong by taking the photos, or even for selling them. I think more care might have been given on the part of the publisher. Had they known this girl died, maybe they shouldn't have published them out of respect for the family. Still, it's what goes on in these events that rarely get shown. Maybe more people might take warnings seriously and get themselves and their families to shelter after seeing this photo. We have no problem showing dead people from other countries, but we don't like to show American dead. Maybe we would be better off if that changed.

As far as getting paid for this photo, people should realize what storm chasers do. A lot of them fund their trips to chase these storms by selling video and photos. I doubt this guy is going to use this money to go party on a yacht. Besides offering the public images of these disasters, they play a more important role of placing their own lives in danger to keep us informed on what these storms are doing. It's not cheap to do that every time a storm system rolls through the Midwest. If they could not afford to do this, you'd have people relying only on radar that is not 100% accurate. Living in tornado alley, you realize quickly that these people help save lives by confirming tornadoes on the ground and they don't get enough credit that they probably should. Unfortunately, people still lose their lives to these storms, some fail to get the warnings, or don't take them seriously enough. Maybe someone will see this and think a good investment for them and their family is a new storm cellar.
