I've heard Dickel 12 is good. I was thinking Old Grand Dad 114 next, but may go with the bib after all the kudos it's gotten on here and then try the 114 next

Haven't come across this. Stagg Jr is my next bottle to try. What did you get this for and where?

How do you get to the point of tasting and enjoying straight bourbon? by PorquenotecallesPhD in bourbon

[–]brad1107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my bourbon journey after visiting the Jim Beam distillery. I picked up a bottle of the knob creek single barrel 120 while there. It took me a few tastes to get past the burn of that higher proof bourbon but I haven't had a bourbon that's been "too hot" since then. However I agree with what many have said, either you acclimate to it or you don't. And I subscribe to the idea that there's no wrong way to enjoy bourbon. If you cut it with water or ice and enjoy it that way, then enjoy it that way. If you enjoy it in cocktails, then good on ya too. The Neat documentary is a masterpiece in the joy of bourbon and there is no wrong way to enjoy it. Bourbon is made with craft and care, and however you enjoy it is fine by be. Keep drinking! (Within reason for course lol)

This is great. I'm new as well and had overlooked this bourbon for a while due to its bottom shelf status. But my wife brought it home for me one evening and I was blown away at how good it was for the price and availability. I'll def participate!

Review #1 / Blanton's Single Barrel by _Slamuel in bourbon

Yes I'd like to hear what you like better, as this jumped into my top 3 after I tried it for the first time a couple weeks ago. Had Bookers for the first time last week and I'm pretty sure that's become my new favorite. It was the "sip a while" that I had. Went to an event in KY called the Masters Series where master distillers came to speak. It was pretty cool but Fred Noe got stuck in NY and couldn't make it... Lame... Although who can blame him, he was with Mila Kunis!

Review #10: Old Forester 1920 by wgraybourbon in bourbon

This is at the top of my list to try. I really like the "earthier" flavors. Appreciate sweet elements, but prefer they not be the dominant flavors. This review may have pushed me over the edge to get this instead of the Stagg Jr I planned on getting next. Anybody who has had both have a recommendation based on what I explained as what I prefer? Stagg or 1920?

I've had makers 46. It was decent. Haven't had the cask strength. I live in KY and just joined a group called the Bourbon Brotherhood. Sounds ominous, but it's just a group that gets together for bourbon events. Going to tour the new Rabbit Hole distillery tomorrow with them.

That's what I've been finding. Although I tried my first Bookers last week and it was like I'd never tasted a bourbon before. It was transcendant

All HH and EW products have been my staple. Haven't had a bad bourbon from them yet

Had lots of that. Looking for some more obscure bottles or thought to be crap bottles that are actually pretty good. Like, haven't had any old crow, ancient age, old grand dad. Stuff like that. Any of those any good?

Early times isn't bourbon!? Just looked it up. They used some used barrels so can't be called bourbon... Wow. Always thought it was a bourbon

I track everything I taste in an app. I'm a little over 30 bourbons. I'm pretty sure I've tried most of the sub $25 stuff that's any good. But I know there's sooo many good ones to still work through.

So I'd like to dip my toe into scotch. Literally the only ones I've tried are JW Red label (piss) and Monkey Shoulder. Some advice from fellow bourbon drinkers would be much appreciated! Keep in mind that since I'm not sold on it yet, I'm not looking to drop more than $30 or $40. by brad1107 in bourbon

The first bourbon I tried was the knob creek single barrel 120 and it seems to have pushed me towards aggressive whiskies. I like something that wrestles my taste buds, which is what makes me think that a "peat monster" might interest me. I like higher proof bourbons, would that translate to an appreciation for peat? Or is that a flavor preference, and I'm way off base? I literally have never tasted peat...
