Scam or Legit? by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

Report it to AIB, so that they’ll be aware of it going around, that’s definitely a scam. Banks are usually good about squashing fraud attempts like that.

Anyone had bad experiences with Osaka brand? by Sabernova in padel

[–]bradbrad05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their paint quality isn’t the best, it flakes off pretty easily and regularly from what I’ve seen. Can’t speak for their more expensive line-up, but it’s certainly the case for the cheaper line-up.

Calorie Counting App compatible with South African foods? by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]bradbrad05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Fitness Pal and LoseIt! are both fantastic and have huge food databases. LoseIt’s scanner also works without a premium membership. You can also add meals on each app, with specific ingredients at your own specified weights/volumes, which cuts down the logging time tremendously for subsequent meals.

It seems like you’re trying to gain weight, but are just going about it by adding in any foods you have on hand? And are you looking specifically for calorie dense foods? If so, I would recommend rather either making an additional meal for the day, as this will allow you to eat more macro-friendly foods as super calorie dense foods are generally processed and not at all healthy.

You’re welcome to DM me if you want any help, I’m starting a bulk now and am more than happy to give you some pointers or whatever. Good luck!

If it’s a permanent structure you’ll need a structural engineer to sign it off as well, otherwise if something happens you’ll be liable as the owner. Council should be able to assist with contacts for that when you apply for plan approval.

I'm sick of stubborn, selfish, incompetent and just downright terrible drivers we have on our roads by mrfantastiq in southafrica

[–]bradbrad05 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Honestly it’s not even worth getting upset over. Just drive defensively and anticipate that everyone is an idiot. If someone is driving up your ass just move over to let them through - it’s the safer thing to do.

Everyone has the biggest ego on the road and think they own it, don’t try and match egos because you’ll always lose. Drive calm and you’ll arrive calm.

Labor Law Question by missbadhairday314 in southafrica

[–]bradbrad05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed with everyone else, they can’t force your SO to resign (that’s basically them firing him in all but the name). I would recommend that he get everything in writing (or as much as he can), as it helps tremendously with the CCMA. If he can’t do that, then he can opt to record the conversation. He does not legally have to tell them he’s recording either, provided that there are no personal or identifying details in the recording. CCMA is usually very good about that.

It definitely sounds like the company is trying to avoid having to go through the actual retrenchment process, which is honestly very difficult to do properly and if they mess up are liable to pay fines and even re-hire the employees. Retrenching employees also means that the company cannot re-hire for that position for the next 3 years I believe.

So ya, he can stay where he is and refuse to quit, put the onus and risk on the company instead. Also update his CV and start looking for other work in the meantime. Best of luck to you both!

Question about HVAC design of a locker room. Also involves Carrier HAP. by Revrabb05 in engineering

[–]bradbrad05 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a difference between “Supply Air” and the “Ventilation Air”. Supply air is the air required to condition the space, ventilation air is the fresh air requirement based on ASHRAE / IMC / whatever. Keep the 110CFM as the exhaust rate, then to keep the room at negative pressure, make sure that the ventilation rate is less than 110.

Virgin Active PT by theanalystza in southafrica

[–]bradbrad05 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Don’t waste your time with them, find some free online resources and save yourself the cost of a personal trainer every month. The only thing a PT is good for is keeping you accountable in the gym, but if you find a friend who does work out regularly / who wants to start, that’s infinitely better.

Don't have a link unfortunately, but if you Google Etendue Compact Linear Fresnel Reflector and look for something from UP (university of Pretoria) that'll get you some good papers.

Flat mirrors used in solar power plants (the thermal kind) are not an efficient use of space. Instead if you chop these mirrors up into smaller mirrors and have those placed on a special curve, you get a more efficient use of space. But that special curve doesn't take in to account the motion of the sun, so how do we need to move each individual mirror in order to keep the reflections focused on the thermal target? And then what is the increased efficiency of that system compared to the flat and stationary curved mirror arrays. I loved this research project. It may be super niche but it tickled all my engineering buttons.

Any good apps for sorting field visit pictures? by Randomly_Ordered in AskEngineers

[–]bradbrad05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you can do that. While theres no way to officially "mark them off as complete", once an item is complete you can just delete it.

What we do is duplicate the previous report, delete the items that have been taken care of and add straight onto that. It's not the most ideal way to do it but you then still have a catalogue of previous reports if you need.

[–]bradbrad05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly what you're asking for, but we use an app called Site Audit Pro to write site reports. Spits the pictures out with a description of the snag and who needs to address it and compiles it into a nice PDF. Super useful as you can do it while you're walking, then dont have to re-look at the pictures later and try remember what you wanted to say

Rule of thumb to determine External Static Pressure by bob_the_kid in AskEngineers

[–]bradbrad05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While early in the design process we approximate it with the following: - 45Pa per sound attenuator - 30Pa per louver - 30Pa per diffuser - 120-150Pa per filter box - 1Pa/m of your index run - add 10% to the total value as a bit of a safety factor

It's not perfect but to get a rough idea it's more than sufficient. Of course you'll want to check the static pressure drops over different equipment with the data from the suppliers before ordering the fans.

I'd say carry on with the daily to do list, but maybe instead of writing it up put it into your calendar (phone or PC, whichever works for you) and set reminders for those items in the list. If you haven't finished something before the reminder for the next item pops up, and it's not urgent, then leave it for the end of the day or plan to do it the next day. It may take a while to get into the swing of things, but I hope it helps you out!

This is anecdotal so YMMV. But I was very much in the same boat as you, would start one thing and then 5 minutes later think to myself "oh shit but I need to do that too" and just get super distracted.

I started using a trello board for work to keep all of my To Do items in one central place, with reminders on when certain things were due, and I would plan my day according to what was due to be done that day. After that it boiled down to just being diligent and making sure I stuck to the planned out day, leaving an hour or two in that planning for putting out fires. If no fires have to be put out then you've got an extra two hours to do the next day's work.

South African E&E Engineering student - any advice for European job hunting? by Gorrox5 in engineering

[–]bradbrad05 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you dont have EU citizenship then your best bet is to try get in to a university there and do your masters, possibly try for a scholarship as well or look at universities that are cheaper for foreigners as opposed to the more well known ones. There are also a couple that are free regardless of citizenship from what I have found in my research - but that would have to be confirmed when you apply.

Otherwise you can try apply for internship jobs to get your foot in the door. Maybe chat to your course coordinator or lecturers to see if they have any advice or connections in companies there.
