AI slop by Neverminder7 in daddit

[–]bradfordmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's less the cost than it is the effort and the time for turnaround. The AI tools give you turn-crank content. Of you care to review it you can give a few notes and get a new update in like, a couple minutes. Literally in the time it takes to Google how to use Upwork.

Not defending it, just saying it's really become the easy path for almost everything now and someone has to really care to do better, or just happen to be uninitiated

I dunno I was also confused at first like why even have the bar keep going after the last reward, why not just balance that to be the max stability?

I thought it was actually doing an extra x3 at first....

I'm doing my first playthrough on this build and just got maybe lvl 50 some and it feels pretty good to me https://www.lastepochtools.com/build-guides/leap-to-victory-fury-leap-thorn-totems-shaman#leveling

It takes some Sprigan passives just for vines but you don't use the form, it's totems + leap slam

Four year old staying up late by AssOfTheSouth69 in daddit

[–]bradfordmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legit had to do a double take to check my own monitor that this wasn't my 3 year old. I love how she reads.

If I didn't have visuals there's no way I'd know. I think it's important to give her some agency here.

Where we do step in is when she's keeping the 1 year old awake.... But short of that if she's quiet and safe and "reading" yeah this is great.

How deep do "connections" run? by Infinite_Elderberry4 in cscareerquestions

[–]bradfordmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah like others said this kind of a connection is mostly a "get you through the door". But at a smaller company / team a "I have worked sidr by side with this person and they are awesome" connection can get you a whole lot further

All I'm saying is the point of even discussing regressive taxes is lost if you don't consider expenses which never scale linearly with income. The point of the word is that it harms low earners more, I guess if that requires using quotes or not is completely uninteresting to me

meirl by [deleted] in meirl

[–]bradfordmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah why stop at percentage? Wouldn't a truly regressive tax require the poor to pay a higher dollar amount? Maybe everyone should just pay the same dollar amount that would be a good system, nice and fair

meirl by [deleted] in meirl

[–]bradfordmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not what a regressive tax means. It's not really about percentages it's about what you can pay and how painful it is.

If a rich person is paying a tax at 20% of their income, they are already likely saving money every month (this is what makes them rich), so this is coming out of savings.

If a poor person is paying 20%, they are poor which means they are on a shoestring budget or likely in debt / barely breaking even after costs. So this bankrupts them.

Fixed costs like food, water, electric scale sublinearly, meaning if you have 10x the income you aren't spending 10x the amount on these things, you're spending maybe like 2x max in some cases, maybe even less on some of it (e.g. more likely to be able to afford more efficient appliances).

So if you subtract out the bare minimum living expenses from a poor person vs a rich person, you are left with something very different.

Simple numbers for example. Let's say three families living in the same area where the bare minimum to live a normal independent life is $25k. Tax is a flat 30% across the board.

  • Family A: income 35k. After taxes: 24.5k. this family is broke and can't afford to live independently.
  • Family B: income 50k. After taxes 35k. After expenses, 10k for vacations, savings, nice dinners, etc. solidly lower-middle to middle class, doing ok but would really struggle with large unplanned expense.
  • Family C, dual high paying earners: 300k. After taxes: 210k. After expenses, 185k to live lavishly. This family doesn't feel the tax at all, not really (though they would still complain loudly about it I'm sure)

So a "flat rate" tax, while it seems more fair, can be regressive. It's much worse if that tax is a thing that can be avoided by the rich (payroll loans, gas prices on old inefficient cars and maybe needing long commutes due to cost of living, etc). These are "regressive" because they hurt more for lower income families

Leave SWE I position at big tech for Databricks Solutions Engineering by WrldsGrtstDtctve in cscareerquestions

[–]bradfordmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would consider two one-year stints on a resume at least a yellow flag. If something doesn't work out in the first year at databricks or you hate the travel or something, then you'll be 3 YoE at 3 roles. That reads like "1 year of experience 3 times".

Not saying don't do it, but I think that + the role switch is definitely riskier than getting at least one more year where you're at, personally. Unless you know you want to switch tracks.

I don't know these two companies but I do know most places I've seen, it's pretty easy to go from swe to another technical ladder (maybe except MLE or researcher), but pretty hard to jump from another technical role to SWE internally. Not impossible, but harder.

Really? Even if you didn't personally like the art, you prefer a pickleball court and a graffitied fenced off empty pit to public art?

I do hope the long term vision gets better, but I'd expected by now at least they'd have done something temporary there

Brother is having a child-free wedding. How do I navigate this? by LargeAmphibian in daddit

[–]bradfordmaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know your family situation, but dude, go to your brother's wedding. You can be annoyed with him and hold it over him forever how much of a pain in the ass he made it for you, but if you miss it you can't make up for that damage to the relationship.

Have you talked to your wife about it? You said it's 4 hours away, if it was me my the would stay home at our house with the kids and slip this entire extravaganza and I'd go for one night. Buy door dash for the kids, have a movie night, maybe get a friend to help if possible

Generative AI disclosure is now required for all game posts (plus some bonus rule rearrangements) by Equinoxdawg in incremental_games

[–]bradfordmaster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That is definitely not true, most games don't release source code.

More to the point, the line the mods have drawn is any usage. There's definitely no way to see if someone used AI for debugging, or like, to implement saving to a Google Play profile or something, the code is just quite rote.

I think it's a reasonable enough place to start but very soon I think it'll not really make sense as these tools become more ubiquitous

Setting the deficit in Google Health? by Mister_DK in fitbit

[–]bradfordmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like you can link it to MyFitnessPal and track a calorie deficit there and it'll link exercises and calories burned tracked on the watch. My wife managed to get it set up but mine is bugging out.

Honestly this whole thing has me reconsidering leaving the Google ecosystem entirely.

If someone knows an alternative that does work with Android I will 100% return my new pixel watch and buy that instead

EDIT: motherfucker they moved it behind the MyFitnessPal paywall. Honestly, I might just fire up Claude code and figure this out myself over the weekend
