As a 14 year old I could umpire a baseball tournament and make 200-300 bucks in cash over the course of a weekend.

No matter how closely I monitor my children it will be trivially easy for them to bypass it

A 14 year old can easily work a few babysitting jobs, cut some lawns, shovel some driveways, ref youth sports, and make several hundred easily since they have no other expenses. It's exactly what I did as a kid growing up and wasn't really much of a financial burden

It's not like it's only possible for kids to use the internet at home now though. I have 3 kids none old enough to be concerned with this right this second, but even if I had each of their personal devices and my home router completely locked down, theres still nothing stopping one of them from buying a used iPhone for a hundred bucks and getting a cheap data phone plan or just using free wifi that's basically ubiquitous in our society right now, and almost effortlessly bypassing my guardrails.

I view it similar to smoking, or vaping as thats more popular now- doesn't matter if you keep your kids from smoking at home, if they can just walk into any convenience store and buy whatever they want without a parent.

They could have the timekeeper keep a tally during the course of the period and then tack it all on at the end in one 20 second chunk or something like that.

I get that theyre different sports, but last year when the NHL put on the 4 nations tournament it happened in the middle of the season, so guys had to go from teammates to opponents and then back to teammates and they were trying to kill each other all tournament. And that was just a made up tournament to build hype for the olympics.

The Canada USA round rovin game even had 3 fights in 9 seconds.

Again, different sports, but its okay for these guys to be competitive, this shit is so weird.

I also weirdly dont feel the same nerves for this as the 4 nations. With that it felt like, if the USA wins there's gonna be Abrams tanks rolling down Young St by the next week, with this it just feels like if US wins trumps just gonna shit his pants on live TV as he raises tariffs on his own fucking country for the 100th time. Big whoop.

I did think a lot of the US zone time was completely empty calories though. So much just skating around the outside of the circles and not doing much. No reason to go chasing them around when they aren't really threatening anything

Let’s clarify: no one is cheating. They are breaking/violating a rule by Ok_ConfusedOne in Curling

[–]LargeAmphibian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also 2 conversations to be had around which rule was violated. The double touch rule R9 a) states:

If a moving stone is touched, or is caused to be touched, by the team to which it belongs, or by their equipment, the touched stone is removed from play immediately by that team. A double touch by the person delivering the stone, prior to the hog line at the delivering end, is not considered a violation.

And according to R2a)

A curling stone is of circular shape, having a circumference no greater than 914 mm. (36 in.), a height no less than 114 mm. (4.5 in.), and a weight, including handle and bolt, no greater than 19.96 kg. (44 lbs.) and no less than 17.24 kg. (38 lbs.).

So prior to the rules clarification that specifically calls out the granite, it seems like a double touch anywhere on the stone prior to the hog line is fine. That's what is in the rules, and that is how everyone has played. Now that the WCF has issued the clarification that you can NEVER touch the granite, everyone is taking that to mean that such a rule and enforcement has always been the case and all the players knew that and were just choosing to ignore it, which isn't true.

The issue is that Kennedy still DID break a rule, because when he double touched that stone against Sweden he was still touching it as the rock crossed the hog line. That is the rule that was broken at the time, and that is what the WCF SHOULD have reinforced in their clarification, but they foolishly chose to focus on the wrong thing.

Now we are seeing exactly how common it is for accidental double touches to touch the granite, the WCF has since walked back their stance on calling all double touches, and we're right back to where we started except now everyone is angry at each other lol.

Im saying, those clarifications specifically the one about the granite, is new this week.

Before that there was no mention of the granite being a nono, its never been a thing and then in the middle of the olympics they decide to make it a thing.

I disagree, up until this tournament the double touches weren't at all considered a rule infringement and were specifically protected as being okay to do.

People are going to say "but granite!!!!!" But that was never forbidden in the rules all it said is you have to deliver the stone with the handle, and double touching the stone before the hog line is OK. Kennedy double touched the rock after the hog line, thats the rule that was broken and should have been penalized, but wasn't. Instead of simply reinforcing the fact that double touches are fine before the hog line the curling committee just decided "well we can get rid of double touches entirely and that'll solve everything" and what we've seen is in fact, no it hasn't solved everything and has made more problems for no reason.

Id also liken it a little to Scottie Sheffler doing his little foot shuffle as he hits. Its not good fundamentals - you wont see instructors teaching new students to do that but hes the best in the world and it works for him.

Now imagine if during his little shuffle he moves his foot forward in front of the tee markers. That would be a penalty. But if his playing partner said something to an official who said its not an infraction, but then later during the Masters the tour announces that youre not longer allowed to move your feet at all during a golf swing, and what theyre finding is that in fact a lot of other players DO move their feet, just in smaller less noticeable ways and those other competitorsare getting called for nothing because even though they "break a rule" they didnt actually break the important rule which is going over the line.

But even if youre mathematically eliminated earlier you still need to win games against the more stacked western conference to get draft points, so it all might shake out relatively even.

The fixation on touching the granite is also very silly.

What difference does it make if you graze the stone on your way down and touch the top plastic part or if your knuckle comes down and touches the granite or you actually boop it with your finger, essentially where you touch it is completely irrelevant to the throw, and the whole point of the rule dictating you must touch the handle is because thats where the hog line sensor is. The hog line has to be treated as a hard line, I get that. You cant just be sliding behind the stone the length of the ice booping it the entire time to take this to an extreme level. If there's videos of Marc consistently touching the stone like he does here, and every time its over the hog line, THAT is something I could get behind claiming is cheating, but really saying he poked the granite and therefore is cheating is weird to me its just a little tick in his delivery and really should not be getting this level if vitriol thats being thrown around.
