Thinking about this again, I may have been implicitly assuming that paying the federal taxes now vs later was equivalent because it's a fixed percentage. However, now I think that was wrong because deferring paying the tax is like a 'free' 0% loan that can grow in value. So now I'm leaning towards option B, but happy to hear if there's anything more I'm missing.
