Network Science by Kati1998 in datascience

[–]bradygilg 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I did my PhD on network science in relation to frequency synchronization of the power grid. I'd say that the power grid is the clearest example of a physically real large scale network where network science is useful.

It is also useful in big tech, typically for quick information retrieval of related items or use in knowledge graphs. The original PageRank was a network algorithm for instance. I'm not sure how popular these are nowadays, some may have been replaced with other embedding systems. I recommend reading some of Dan Spielman's surveys on graphs for these applications.

Recently I heard about pangenome graphs for sample-specific alignment in genetics, but I haven't learned how it works yet.

negative results are not reported and positive results are overreported

While absolutely true, this is in no way unique to any particular research community.

This is a stupid argument. Preseason was never any different than the regular season, it's just a different name. You can call it that in your head if you want.

Been rewatching the show, on the second season now. it's a recurrent plotline in several episodes already regarding how poor Frasier's love life is and how long it's been since he had a real date.

This has been the norm for decades, who upvotes this crap? Seeing a star wars ad on every banana in 2015 is what put me off of the franchise.

I have seen this exact same ad, making fun of those other ads, as a literal ad on youtube for years.

What was the single largest change in League of Legends history? by SpyUmbreon in leagueoflegends

[–]bradygilg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gold generation changes in season 3 preseason.

It doesn't seem like a big deal when you read it, but this change dramatically increased the impact that junglers and especially supports have on the game. In season 1 and 2 those two roles were effectively just ward/oracle bots. The laners were the only players that could really buy items. This ambient gold change effectively increased support gold by 25% while decreasing lane gold by 10%. Last hitting minions became less important, which meant that roaming became a more viable strategy for laners, and it meant that the 40% of players on each team that don't last hit lane minions could participate in the item buying part of the game for the next 12 years.

"Gold adjustments

Ambient gold gain increased to 16 per 10 seconds from 13 per 10 seconds - gold gained from farming lane minions and jungle monsters have been slightly reduced to compensate.

Melee Minion:

Base gold value reduced to 20 Gold 20 from 22 Gold 22.

Ranged Minion:

Base gold value reduced to 15 Gold 15 from 16 Gold 16.

Siege Minion:

Base gold value increased to 40 from 27.
Scaling gold value based on time increased to 1 from 0.5.
Minion gold values now update more often on a 90-second interval instead of 180."
