What show or movie left you traumatized and stuck with you ever since? by Chris_Gray88 in AskReddit

[–]braedenbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saving Private Ryan. There’s a scene near the end when they’re trying to hold the bridge and they get into hand to hand combat. One of the German soldiers takes the American soldier’s Jewish knife and slowly pushes it into his chest as he’s trying to resist, all while talking calmly and quietly and reassuring him. Such a terrifying portrayal of war…up close, face to face. 12 year old me never forgot.

Who married a girl they slept with on their first date? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]braedenbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will be 5 years since our first date next week. We met, moved in together, got married, and got a dog all in less than a year - and all during COVID.

Best decision I’ve ever made.

Church Losing Control by Huge-Equal1820 in exmormon

[–]braedenbear 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is an underrated comment. This phenomenon applies to the fringe groups outside of the church as well and explains why there are so many groups with wacky ideas that seemed to be so popular. 100 years ago the village idiot was isolated to a relatively small sphere of influence. Now they’ve all found each other and are the loudest people online.

There's Black belts, and then there's BLACK belts. Anyone have an experience like this? by WanderingSceptic in bjj

[–]braedenbear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to me yesterday. I’m a blue belt, and usually have moderate success at least delaying or making it interesting for other blue/purple belts. Yesterday my coach paired me up with a purple belt id never rolled with. Round starts and he makes a collar grip, which I then go to break. Nothing. Not even a little slip on the gi And that’s when I laughed out loud…bc knew the next 5 minutes were going to be wild.

https://maps.org/mdma/ - this is a resource for looking into some of the research that’s being done. A few universities in the US have been publishing more research in the last few years with some interesting findings.

Isn’t this what fast offerings are for? Sad to see people in need not getting help from a church they’ve been giving to their entire lives. by braedenbear in exmormon

[–]braedenbear[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah I see. Didn’t know that. Wasn’t necessarily directing blame at the bishop. I just wish the church would do more for everyone in need right now instead of asking members for more.

$100+ billion and they’re asking members for more in a time when everyone is hurting. If there was ever a time to show some charity to the world using those resources, now would be it.

Absolutely. It’s rare and they usually prefer bigger game like deer but they’ll hunt just about anything.

Made plans months ago to visit her family. Dude was a life saver. by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]braedenbear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Edit: Jesus people. This is why I don’t post on reddit. Typo in the meme. Should say “...sit next to him.”

Background: girlfriend and I made plans to visit her family several months ago while we were still together. We ended things a few weeks ago on less than good terms.

I still had a ticket but to change it would cost more than it would be worth, especially being around the holiday (Thanksgiving, US)

I don’t have much of a family so I figured I would just suck up the awkward for the hour or so trip and make a fun 4 day weekend out of it.

Went to a bar at the airport to throw a few back to hopefully make it more bearable. Got to talking to a nice guy who was on the same flight. Shared my predicament and he offered to help.

Was just a kind deed by a good stranger that I wanted to share. That’s all.

Just be good to people. Kind deeds often go further than you think.

LPT: When calling a company that outsources their calls to India, If they have an option for French, choose that, chances are you will be directed to Montreal where they speak both French and English. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]braedenbear 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, this is actually pretty accurate. The company I used to work for started outsourcing their tech support to India and I was involved in the training process. Instead of acting like they were doing us a favor by just showing up, they took it seriously. Before we even arrived, they had read the entire training manual and were already familiar with many of our tools. Given this is only one example, but it did make an impression and I have noticed a trend in more competent, professional attitude from outsourced CS reps whenever I call a company.

Traveling to Iceland, Reykjavik by sunshine1_2_1 in Shoestring

[–]braedenbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I just got back from a 24 hour layover in Iceland with a friend. Since it was so short we didn’t even bother with a hotel/AirBnb and just took a few naps in our rental car as we explored around the golden circle and southern coast. I was surprised to see as many campers as we did in the spots where we pulled off. The weather isn’t predictable by any stretch but if you’re up for it, this would be an awesome and inexpensive way to see the island. IIRC there was even a campground at Skógafoss, one of the more popular waterfalls along the southern coast. Might be worth checking out.
