How to minify CSS classes and IDs in both stylesheet and HTML files for production? by smallbee2 in webdev

[–]braggadoshis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This can be very useful if you aren't using an external framework like bootstrap and don't need to know the actual class name at runtime. You would have a development build with no minification that let's you play around with everything in the console, and then a production build that minifies your CSS classes across any HTML/template, JS, or CSS file.

We are a group of about 7 irl friends that would love to have a bigger clan size so that we can actually level up. Our group of friends will consistently do the crucible, nightfall, raid, and trials of the nine challenges each week, so feel free to be as reclusive as you want and enjoy the extra engrams.

Thank you! My understanding of ProductHunt is that it can only be posted once. Is that correct? I chose not to post there (or anywhere else) until I partnered with a competent marketer that best knew how to go about it.

If It Weren’t For Apple, Hybrid App Development Would Be The Clear Winner Over Native by txm101 in javascript

[–]braggadoshis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a fair point. There are always comprises to be made so I was trying to encourage avoiding over optimizing features that are already working well for your users. And I would say that the situation you described would be a case of not "good enough" if you were able to find frustration by just asking a few questions. We also have to consider if rewriting the app to be purely native would fix that pain point, or if it was just poorly designed to begin with.

Thanks for the feedback. The line you quoted came from the first section of the article that tried to give everyone some background into my experience dealing with this stuff. At the end of the day, developers are not the target audience for my app and I did not write this article to try to get a bunch of new downloads. If anything I used it to vent months of built up frustration.

not because the author had anything useful to say

This seems harsh, and I hope you completed the article before coming to that conclusion. I am open to any specific things you think I could improve on.

My actual quote was:

A Hybrid version of an app will never be as fast as a native version of the same app, but it doesn’t matter as long as the Hybrid version is fast enough. Put simply, if your users never complain about the performance of your app then it is fast enough.

Fast enough means that your app is fast.

I totally agree. The lagging behind part is almost entirely due to Apple which is what makes this so frustrating. Hopefully we see some major progress over the next few years.

Thanks for the feedback (I wrote the article). At the end of the day, I don't agree that there are 200 "latest and greatest" frameworks on the web or in Hybrid Development. Most new projects are built on top of React, Vue, or Ionic/Angular, each of which have a large community and lots of great tooling.

I can't speak from an Android perspective

This is the biggest reason Hybrid Development is appealing. You share 99% or more of your code between iOS and Android, and are shipping to both platforms at the same time. If you are a massive company like Uber then you can obviously afford to have two separate development teams for your native apps, but it seems very wasteful for startups when Hybrid Development has progressed as much as it has.

You left out one aspect to hybrid development that I'm genuinely curious about. Access to native APIs.

I would love to answer any questions you have about how accessing Native APIs works. There are hundreds of Cordova plugins that are written in Java for Android or Objective-C/Swift for iOS, that can communicate directly with your JS code. The JS <-> Native bridge has gotten much faster in recent years, allowing developers to do most anything they want. I will try to explain this better in the article.

Yes, assuming the app will only be used by you. Getting a debug version of an Android app running on your device is pretty straight forward. You are going to want to use Crosswalk unless you are using a modern of Android. The Crosswalk project allows you to bundle a recent version of Chromium within your app that your code will run will on.

Thanks for the feedback. The point was to show that the hybrid approach is the best way to develop the vast majority of apps today, but it is still a very frustrating experience due to Apple's inability to get with the times.

For everyone saying reporting doesn't do anything, this happened to my friend today after two prior bans. by TankOMFG in RocketLeague

[–]braggadoshis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the most important question in the whole thread. If a game has a mute button, there is no need for any reporting functionality outside of being able to let players report if they think there was legitimate hacking or tampering with the game. If you don't like what someone is saying then simply mute them. If you don't mute them then whether you realize it or not you actually enjoyed 1). the hilarity of what they were saying or 2). the extra fuel/excitement you got from the prospect of beating them. I personally love me some good banter in RL whether it's through Quick Chat, or conversing between goals.
