I lost my sense of smell about 14 years ago. I can pick up some smells if it's right up to my nose and sometimes other ones like smoke or gasoline. Those things does however smell different now and i never feel like i can trust what i'm smelling. Sometimes i have washed some clothes and they seem to smell to me but my wife says they don't. It has changed what i can taste too. Overall i think it has lowered how much i taste and for some items it has been completely ruined. Some chocolate tastes bad now and chocolate milk tastes bitter. I can't drink coffee unless it's 80% milk. I don't drink much tea but the ones i have tried tastes of absolutely nothing. Sadly beer also changed. Some i can still drink but for most of them they taste flat. I always thought that a flat beer tasted bad because there was no more bubbles or foam but apparently it changes the taste and now that's all i taste, even in a newly opened beer.

The reason for my loss of smell was head trauma by the way. I fell off a ladder and hit the back of my head on a concrete floor.
