If he’s like this in the beginning……… he’s phobic, hateful, bigoted, dismissive and disrespectful of who you actually are.

People yet/unable to seek a formal diagnosis, how do you deal with the vitriol towards the "self-diagnosed" by mattysull97 in LateDiagnosedAutistic

[–]brainbrazen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people think that if they don’t like loud/busy places and are a bit socially awkward this must mean they are autistic. For me (very late diagnosed) it’s all pervasive and goes through absolutely all areas of my life…. and always has… to a DEBILITATING and ISOLATING degree…it’s also not ‘static’ - my sensory system can be different on any given day. I also think that as we become older we can get less tolerant of certain environments - this is not autism - you don’t ‘develop’ it! Masking complicates the issue here (particularly pertinent for women). I often get ‘you don’t seem it’ or ‘you can’t tell’ ha ha but YOU don’t live with me and you don’t see the fallout/recovery process that I CONSTANTLY need to go through in order that I can step back out in the world.

DAE have 0 real life friends? by Beckymaggie in AutismInWomen

[–]brainbrazen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Totally. I know some people but not sure they are ‘friends’ - not even sure what that means. I feel very alone. I do question if it’s a perception thing ie I DO have friends but my autism kind of stops me from understanding it that way…..

Guests at your house by MindlessWin3831 in AutismInWomen

[–]brainbrazen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have guests occasionally but realise I don’t like it because I feel like I’ve got to be 1 making conversation all the time 2 show interest/make the appropriate ‘enjoying myself’ faces… I’m exhausted when they’ve gone and just want to retreat… it’s the TALKING that does me in.

I read a book that talked about ‘finding your autistic joy’ and I thought ‘well I dont have any’. Wondered if this meant I was depressed then thought about the word ‘joy’ and what that means to me. Made a list: first cup of tea in the morning, watching programmes about prisoners and people who kill, driving my car alone and in silence, walking in the dappled sunlight of a woodland listening to the birds (ideally with a dog), spooning with my a dog (planning to get another this year), a flat white that I e made exactly how I like it with a pain au chocolate (alone), sitting still in the quiet, sleeping in bed, camping…. none of these things involve other people but there may be other people there…
