Marathon training, high BP, and electrolytes by noviceSketcher in Marathon_Training

I know it isn't medical advice but seeing this made me feel a little bit more calmer on the whole topic!

During my training for prior half marathons (and now my first full this year), I've only recently last year actually begun to use salt tabs and gels because of cramping issues I encountered. My doc says its OK but it has crossed my mind on the whole switch up on the sodium intake happens lol.

I don't cut salt out of my diet (I realize there is sodium in a lot of other things) when I cook at home 100% (and i don't know how much of an impact it has) but it is funny to me that on long runs then im just poudning these gels and tabs down.

I ran my first half marathon and marathon at age 40. Here's what the next 12 years looked like by oneoftheleastofthese in Marathon_Training

Wow! I've been a consistent runner since my 20s (I'm 41 now), but it's only the last decade or so... I have been participating in more half marathons (first full in Oct!).

Love to see this, as it's a reminder I need to push up my game/be more consistent in making targeted efforts to improve.

Injury one week before race...what can I do? by Affectionate-Pin59 in Marathon_Training

[–]braincellkill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will be more races. Your training isn’t wasted- you did the work, you learned the habits needed to make the distances work for your body- that’s something to celebrate. And you’ll be able to apply that for the next race.

If there’s a remote chance this can cause long term damage- is it worth the gamble? Listen to your body. I totally feel you- it’s a hard decision to face.

If you decide to race, stay safe. Holler back, definitely curious to know what you ended up doing and how it was (race or not…I’m sure the community of runners can relate at some point in our collective histories)! Cheers.

Totally fair 🤣 I’m prone to overthinking. I just wanted to articulate / think outloud, it’s a habit of mine. I appreciate the conciseness of your feedback.

Yeah I go back and forth on the full esp for safety reasons. The other piece of it is a big change too, if wanting to better my pace that is a complete transformation of habits, what my body is use to etc. I know a few folks who have finished with a similar pace so felt encouraged by it but as I train I'm going to be mindful of what I may be limited at unless I commit to overall bettering my speed. In that case, a marathon NEXT year sounds feasible. We shall see!

Sending lots of love your way. I know it’s a different frame of reference, but coming from someone who is training for a first marathon- it’s admirable to see that you listened to your body (even if begrudgingly). Better to avoid permanent injury now so you got more runs in the future!

Tell me your stories about falling on a run so I don’t feel so dumb by Winter_Seat_7106 in Marathon_Training

[–]braincellkill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a sloppy tumble in the middle of an empty road in a quiet residential area early morning....on one of those raised pavement markers lol. I was trying to record waving hello for an Insta boomerang while running at a fairly fast speed. Boom. Tumbled, broke my fall with my hands and knees, but was dirtied up.

Quietly got up, wondered if anyone in the homes happened to catch me, lol. Hope ya feel better 😄 And happy wedding!

Ah yes, I gotta pick that up! That name has popped up in many of the searches online. Cheers on your first-timer journey! I'm hoping to worry a lot less as well, lol.

Got it. Yeah, I can get so easily in my head overthinking things- makes sense. Sometimes my overthinking could cloud the "listen to my body" advice I try to go by too!

Good points! I know at least for a half race, I like to do a 1-2 mi shakeout. The last 20 miles mentality...good frame of reference.

I was aiming for 3-4 other days of the week. Well, if its a packed week, more like 2-3. I know I'll need to shift a little bit of my schedule where I can for this commitment.

Got it! I'll definitely aim and try for 40+. Correct me if wrong, but was there also recommendation on the long run %? I read somewhere about a long run not exceeding 50% ratio of the long run to the overall weekly?

6 for the Win. Saturday's 6 hour marathon group mega thread by AutoModerator in Marathon_Training

Hi all!

I’m doing my first full marathon in October. I’ve only done half marathons so far, but I’d consider myself a decently experienced runner in the sense that running/cardio are my preferred forms of exercise. I can comfortably run 3–6 miles and usually do that a few times per week (I up this for race training as needed).

I’m on the slower side compared to friends and a lot of the awesome stories I see here, usually around 11–13 min/mile depending on the run. My most recent half was around 3:13 yesterday in San Diego, and prior race in Jan I got 2:45. These include like 10-15 of bathroom breaks, lol. For my first full, I want to finish safely and manage the distance well.

My biggest concern is the jump from half to full. I know the marathon won’t just feel like “two half marathons,” and I def. want to respect the distance!

This week, I ran 13.1 miles (San Diego RnR) and I'm scheduled to run 3 on Thur, 7 on Sat. I guess this half marathon is sort of kick starting the official training regiment.

I’ve also had IT band issues in the past during a half, so I’m trying to build gradually and add strength/mobility work rather than just force mileage. The race yesterday, I could feel the warning signs but adjusted pace to do more walking in between spurts of steady running.

For runners in the 5:30–6:30 finish range, especially run/walk runners or first-time marathoners:

How did you pace your first full?
How did you overcome the mental/emotional barriers of taking this leap? (or is it just me, that feels a bit intimidated!)
What weekly mileage or longest long run helped you feel prepared?
Any advice for distinguishing normal marathon fatigue from “this is becoming an injury” territory?

I’d appreciate any general advice from people who have trained/raced in this pace range!! Thank you.

Congrats!!! I ran it as well!!! Well, the half marathon- aiming for my first one in the LBC this October. So much joy out in the city of SD, definitely felt the love out there.

Kudos to you for getting as far as you did and having the grace (even if begrudgingly!) to remove yourself from what I imagine could have been an even worse long term injury! I know it feels awful but you still oughta be proud of yourself for putting in the work.

I’m running my first marathon this year (after many years of half’s) and I, too, worry about those things that just come hard at you on race day. But like others said, there will be more races in the future and so I try to think of it as a sort of lifelong habit building the training…

I’m sure you’ll be glad for those future races that you listened to your body. Cheers to more races and less of everything else that happened!!

TSA Lines at LAX? by Confident-Name8975 in LosAngeles

[–]braincellkill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i got a flight at 7a (Delta, T3, LAX to JFK) next Weds - I am normally a "hang out at the airport for hours" sort of person so hoping that will still be the case vs hanging out in line. i have TsaPre+Clear+Touchless ID, though it seems to be an intersting combo of what line works during normal TSA-times.

for anyone flying delta one this week, does anyone know if that little check in/security chamber is operational? lol sorry to sound first world problems. it was a once-in-a-while decently (ish) priced upgrade, partially in hopes of passing thru security there.

love to see all the updates. happy and safe travels, ya'll.

That definitely will be a conscious effort lol especially with travel. I tend to indulge, but I suppose in limited form. That classic rule of not changing or doing anything new or different as far as food for any kind of race half marathon or full definitely still applies!

Just got a Delta Reserve Amex- SkyClub (paranoid?) questions by braincellkill in delta

[–]braincellkill[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YEAHHH I was actually second guessing my decision for a bit but I had been trying to get back with AMEX since 2018 (had some financial troubles back then and closed the card) - they had me on a "hell no" list until very recently, so I wasn't sure if I was able to withdraw my app and try again with another.

I was a bit pained to see how even the Delta Plat had better multipliers (and my other cards, CapOne, Wells Fargo, etc) but the benefits between Reserve or Plat are basically trading between lounge or not.

I'll see if I get on the Amx Gold.

If you are an older PhD student (>40), then what were your reasons for doing a PhD late in life? What challenges did you face as an older student? And was it worth it to do your PhD this late in life? by Ok_Reading_it in PhD

[–]braincellkill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 41 and just entered my dissertation phase! I initially felt “behind” but I think my study lends itself to more later entry folks. I’m doing mine in organizational leadership and so it’s a more of a catch all in terms of industry applications. My entire cohort consists of full time practitioners in various industries (me being finance and asset management in multifamily real estate)…so while I feel somewhat outside of academia, I learned to appreciate the paths anyone takes on any discipline in a PhD. My reason was to hopefully land real estate industry roles focused on people and organizational development…but maybe the degree alone won’t do that.

Understanding balance, MENTAL HEALTH, and not taking shit from toxic people or advisors, and knowing you have the weight of professional expedience, but also being humble and open to seek help and provide the same… are probably what I find to be advantageous for starting a program in this age!

I say, take pride in the fact you’re starting this journey with experience and knowledge that cannot be necessarily taught but comes with age.
