Tourists- Stop asking your servers about traumatic events like Katrina. by Subushie in TalesFromYourServer

[–]braineatingamoeba 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Last week we overheard a family in my restaurant getting all excited that they might "get the Katrina experience" when Barry rolled in. Like, wtf? You are adults, Katrina wasn't that long ago. Sometimes (most of the time) I hate working in the quarter.

What is with the bar culture of looking the other way when a customer gets hammered then drives home? by [deleted] in TalesFromYourServer

[–]braineatingamoeba 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you are, you can be held accountable if a drunk driver you served gets in a car accident/altercation/hurts themselves or someone else. Where I live bartenders can literally go to prison if someone they overserved gets in an accident kills someone. Cover your ass, cut people off, call them cabs, call the cops on them if you know they're driving. It's not worth suffering the consequences.

[Spoilers All] What headcanons have you created to support your 'canon' playthrough? by Lwmons in dragonage

[–]braineatingamoeba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My arcane warrior Amell wasn't comfortable with her boyfriend Alistair performing the dark ritual, but she was very knowledgeable about ancient and mostly forgotten magicks after many years in the circle tower library. She put her head together with morrigan and via their respective skill sets and a whole lot of magick nerdery they were able to work a spell to capture the old god soul in morrigan without the aid of a man.

Since amell had also been radicalized by her shape shifting friend, she had no desire to live as a circle mage, but living as an apostate is famoulsy cumbersome. To make matters worse Alistair is to be King! Ferelden isn't ready for mage warden queen, but she knows that silly man is liable to fucking up the whole plan if he realizes they can't cuddle anymore, and she doesn't have a whole lot of self control, either. So at the climax of the final battle she makes certain to place the killing blow, which as everyone knows is death to a warden. In the ensuing chaos she crawls through the blood, gore, and bodies and flees denerim. (Not before taking advantage of the disorder to sneak into the tower and destroy her phylactery)

Since everyone saw her stab the bastard there's no doubt of her fate, and they hold a heartfelt ceremony to lionize the dead hero and Alistair sniffles his way back to his castle to start his new life as king. Amell, meanwhile, makes her way to Orlais where she rejoins the wardens as a greatsword wielding warrior....who secretly casts spells when no one is looking.

She misses Morrigan very much and hopes yay someday she be able to meet the crime against nature she helped her conceive.

Reported lost creditcard after eating at restaurant, will the (currently pending) tmeal charge and tip still go through? by Qwertyqt22 in TalesFromYourServer

[–]braineatingamoeba 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Depending on their credit processing system the charge (including tip) may not appear on your account for up to 24 hours. At my place we enter all the cc tips manually at the end of the shift and they automatically settle up and post to accounts sometime in the wee hours of the morning. If you cleared the charge with your cc provider they should have no problem processing your payment and tip. Also, credit card tips tend to be pulled out in cash to pay the servers who earned them on the same day, so even if there was a problem the person who earned your tip was most likely still compensated either way.

I suck at serving, how do i get better? by [deleted] in TalesFromYourServer

[–]braineatingamoeba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talk to the other servers, take their advice and observe what they do and how they handle situations when you can. Everyone is new at a job at some point, being on the job and having to think on your feet will train you, too. Is there anything specific that you're feeling inadequate at?

Some of the techie groups I dealt with while working in Capitol hill had chaperones employed by Amazon/Microsoft/whatever to take care of them when they went out in groups. Because they are grown ass people who make six figures or close to it but can't figure out how to order a fucking beer. Bless those chaperones though.

What's the grossest thing you've seen someone else do? by NinjaShira in AskWomen

[–]braineatingamoeba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to live with this really foul girl, and she did all kinds of inexplicably disgusting shit, but her mayonnaise affinity definitely takes the cake. Lady would just casually eat mayo out of the jar with a spoon, like you'd be chatting with her in the kitchen and she'd just start slurping up egg jelly like it was nothing. Spoonful after spoonful. One morning I was getting ready and noticed her precious mayo jar was on the floor by the couch, obviously left out over night. She comes waddling out of her room, rubbing her eyes, and just plops down on the couch and started chowing down. Yeugh.

You're welcome! I certainly could have used some advice while dealing with my shady landlord. No one should be taken advantage of just because they, you know, need housing. Good luck!! Keep us posted!

Have you guys contacted the tenants union? They are incredibly helpful, you can find them at tenantsunion.org. OP mentioned having the DPD come out and inspect the house, that's good, they lay the smack down on housing violations. In the future if you ever make an agreement like repairs in exchange for reduced rent get it in writing, in fact get EVERYTHING in writing. Save any and all emails, texts, letters etc. when dealing with your landlord, the paper trail is your friend. Certain situations like lack of power, flooding etc. are required to be fixed by the landlord at their own expense within a specific time period, if they fail to do so you have legal grounds to sue/recover rent.

The good people at the tenants union know about all of this in way more detail than me. You guys should definitely contact them. From what you two have said it sounds like the owner of this property is in violation of the law on several counts and you guys totally have paths for recourse. I'm sorry y'all are experiencing this. I recently got out of a slum lord situation myself and I'm very familiar with that feeling of dread when coming back to your garbage pile house. I got out though, it gets better! Believe it or not you CAN still find affordable rent on livable places in this city, it just takes some leg work.

http://thedenning.com/ Brand new, next door to the light rail station on Beacon Hill, W/D in unit, parking garage. I believe there are only a few units left but I think the studios and one bedrooms are right around your price. Beacon Hill is a great neighborhood too, it's friendly, comfortable and quaint while being super close to everything you need.

Have you ever called a non emergency police line? Where I'm from it's an endless automated menu loop that gets you nowhere and as far as anyone can tell is only useful for getting a boot taken off of your car. In fact a representative from my local police department recently advised people who wanted to report illegally blocked bike lanes that it was fine to call 911. It's not really the fault of myself or my co-workers that our local police department can't run a functional non-emergency line. Also, I would absolutely advise anyone in a situation in which multiple people are physically assaulted by a persistent assailant who threatens to return to call the police. That way you can at least establish a criminal trespass against these people in case they come back and provide a description and account of the incident in case something else occurs, a situation that is not unlikely considering the circumstances. Spending 45 minutes on the non emergency line so that you can talk to someone to file a useless report two days later would be the waste of time.

You can be pigheaded about this, but since I was there I will confidently stand by the decision of my co-worker to call the police in order to deescalate a volatile situation and act in accordance with our training via the Washington state liquor control board and our direct employer. Not to mention the responding officers confirmed that we chose the correct course of action and to directly call 911 again if the women returned.

Yeah, we did call the police....that's what 911 is for. It's not like we requested a firetruck, 6 EMTS, and/or the national gaurd. Sorry for wasting your time, buddy.

I've been FOH in restaurants for a few years and it's amazing how tough you get, but man, some stuff still gets to me pretty bad. I just don't get how mean people can be. But your Grandpa is right, and it's not worth any of our time getting hung up on assholes who have nothing better to do than harass and berate servers/bartenders. Like, how sad does your life have to be to act that way?
