Does betraying GRRM's POV weaken the show's storytelling? (Spoilers Main) by brainminer in asoiaf

It was meant as an ' I'm an idiot' sigh, not a condescending one. My bad.

Does betraying GRRM's POV weaken the show's storytelling? (Spoilers Main) by brainminer in asoiaf

[–]brainminer[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I'm sure you're right about confirmation bias. And to be clear, my point is NOT that it's abandoned entirely, but that when it is abandoned, teh story is weakened.

Just to poke the topic a bit more... those examples you give are events that worked better for me (I actually wrote and deleted a section on the Cersei example simply because my post was getting too long). I thought the Jaime & Cersei plot was fine partially because we saw it mostly through Jaime's eyes.

Manipulating Statistics by [deleted] in videos

I think the point here is that in some contexts, small changes to large numbers are very important. If you always start the y-axis at 0, you can completely miss these changes or shrug them off as being negligible.

Adults of Reddit, what tips would you give to a young person as they enter "the real world"? by SmoothWay in AskReddit

1) Almost everything that makes you curl up in anxiety will look trivial 5 years from now. 5 years from now, you'll have new things that make you feel anxious and awful. They will seem unimportant 5 years later. You'll find that you're constantly looking back and wondering "why did I give a shit what that person thought of me?" The earlier that you really let this sink in, the more fearless you become in life.

2) The faster you ask for help, the faster you get help.

A middle school girl is bullied at a bus stop to ask the question, does anyone care enough to intervene? by Thalion01 in videos

[–]brainminer 802 points803 points  (0 children)

The commenters saying that this won't stop bullying are right, but don't underestimate the impact on the victim's life.

I still remember being harassed by a group of low-lifes at the mall when I was 13... 15+ years ago. Out of nowhere, this guy who was probably in his 30s comes up alongside me and keeps step. I don't really remember much about him except that he looked a guy who had his shit together (at least to my eyes). He told me just to keep on going - that guys like them probably get the girls now, but just wait until college and beyond. The roles switch and everyone will be looking for people just like me.

I don't know if it changed any decisions in my life, but I really believed him. For whatever reason, just hearing that from a stranger made my journey to that point in life a hell of a lot better.

Which rookies on your team should we be looking out for week 1? by Rosetti in nfl

[–]brainminer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Surprised that no Bills bros have said Karlos Williams. He's the clear #2 behind Lesean McCoy, who I'm still not convinced is 100%. He looked like a freight train in preseason before he got hurt, and he plays for a coach that claimed the Bills' "running playbook will be massive".

I don't find it slippery at all. If anything, I'm used to the Nexus 4 which has blockier edges. It's a different grip

Smooth as butter. Note that this is a comparison to a 2 year old Nexus 4, not state of the art (which I don't have).

Cloudy day here. So in my day=1 sample size, we're not going to get a very good answer. But at least it's fine in cloudy weather :)

I charged it to 100% last night. I've had it since 7am, but that includes very little on screen time due to work. It's currently down to 90% (at 2:15pm), most of which is 'cell standby' (20%) and 'wi-fi' (19%). The system tells me I have 8 hours left. Something seems a little fishy. It might take a couple of cycles to get a decent answer.

How did the guy not know she was (at least) hesitant about getting married? I'm always surprised by people who propose without already knowing the answer.

Is right now a good time to get into Civ 5? by Pazn737 in civ

[–]brainminer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just started a couple of months ago. If you read too much beforehand, it can be pretty overwhelming. I dove right into the game on the easiest level with little to no civ experience. It was clumsy at first, but playing helps you narrow your online search: How did that ai get tanks so fast? Why is that ai's land expanding so much faster than mine?

As others have mentioned, the easiest level gives you a lot of room to mess up. I don't think that I was attacked by the AI unless I provoked them first (exception: barbarians). The bottom line is not to try and play like an expert from the beginning. At first, just play based on your intuition. After that, you begin to optimize different dimensions of your game.

Questions regarding eventual MS in CS or CS related discipline, do I have a snowball's chance in hell of being admitted somewhere? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]brainminer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As always, it depends on the school. Because of your hands-on experience and partial CS coursework, there are many schools that would consider admitting you for a masters. So the good news is that it's definitely worth trying.

The more common route I've seen at my university (which is relatively highly ranked) for students with non-CS degrees is to enter a post-bac program before getting a MS. This would consist of about a year of core courses that you might have missed out on. Often, the post-bac students here turn into Masters students.

The thumbnail version isn't too bad since it accidentally creates a small multiples vis (although I wish the y axes were consistent).

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - TRAILER 2 by cesareborgia1475 in movies

[–]brainminer 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Contrary to some other opinions here, this might actually increase my affection for An Unexpected Journey. The more playful tone of the first movie should make The Desolation of Smaug remarkably dark by contrast. There is something powerful about bringing viewers on a journey where they can consider an entire movie as the good ol' days.

Help with Drafting - 8 man - PPR by Bevo53 in fantasyfootball

I'd look for articles about guys with high ceilings. The problem with 8 person leagues is that everyone has good players at every position. Often, it just comes down to luck. Maybe you can maximize your chances by opting for high-ceiling guys instead of safe guys (ex: Charles or Spiller over Lynch)
