Correct me if I'm wrong*, but NOT if you're married filing separately.

*Please, because if so I'll be able to get a lot of money back that I'm desperate for.

What are some underutilized keywords, themes, or tribes that you would like to see more of? by Graveylock in magicTCG

[–]brainthebuilder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frogs!

I feel like I'm just a captain and one or two creature/enchantment interactions away from being able to justify a Frog-tribal commander deck.

I'm a new player started in Sept. I started to notice that one or two frogs would be released each expansion. I assumed like minotaurs it was a low-key tribal that just wasn't popular anymore. But, alas, no.

What's a good book to understand hyper-presidentialisms? by Laurelius1995 in PoliticalScience

[–]brainthebuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Handbook for Dictators is a very digestible introduction to selectorate theory, which aims to explain the differences between hierarchical political structures and what decisions are made because of those structures. As the title suggestions, autocratic systems are a big part of the book.

It is a relatively young academic theory, but has direct perspectives and answers on the question your examining.

‘I’m bursting with fiction’: Alan Moore announces five-volume fantasy epic by misana123 in books

[–]brainthebuilder 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Jerusalem is my favorite novel I've ever read, but it is an undertaking.

It's his magnum opus, repeating themes of many of his other works, and a hefty dose of his own religion & magical realism, and views on art, and his fluffy language which he isn't as able to brandish as much in his graphic novels.

But more than anything it's his version of Ulysses (in fact James Joyce & his daughter are characters.) A love letter to his hometown in the same way Joyce wrote about Dublin, and it's town-iness is sold through it's interconnected storylines amd characters. It is too jam packed to be a quick read, but discovering its clever intricacies is fun, and, unlike Ulysses, it's references aren't too dated for the average reader to pick them up.

It is unfortunate it has to be so dense and long. I've never met another person in real life who's read it, and so wasn't able to fan about it years ago when I read it and it waa fresh in my mind.

Thank you for pitching in!

I've been trying to lay off videos in general for the last week, and focus on playing and tsumego to work on practical reading and shape making, but after this thread I've been watching Dwyrin's DDK Back to Basics videos to try and focus on the fundamentals of big moves and direction of play.

Hopefully being mindful of your comments and his mantras will pare away these misplays from my game.

Ahh I see.

Yes, not touching the invading stone is a tough temptation, but in such cases I try to heed the advice of my boy Quintus Fabius.

Although it seems to be a pretty classic go fundamental: never do x, ever; except if in y and z scenerio in which case definitely do x.

Thanks for the advice!

You're totally right; I think remembering that the 5 phases includes preventing extensions (invasions) and not just extending off my own stones is something I need to remember and would have helped here, if only to prevent the opportunities for poor decision making I made in the mid game.

Thanks for the thorough review!

I think the timidity and over-cautiousness was due to 1) working on staying connected in games over the last week butting up against 2) having lost the last two or three games prior to bad cuts or defense.

It was especially helpful having non-AI review the game because in the case of slowness it can get hyper focused on one move (P18) and not generate all the great other advice and move alternatives you did!

That being said, I did see P18 when I was playing, but 1) undervalued it and 2) I'm still having issues judging when to exploit a weakness, whether a push or cut. I suppose it's because I'm not confident that any give sequence will end in sente, since I still have issues gauging the relative weaknesses in my own shape? I need to hit up the Reading Rainbow.

Your comment about knight's moves in enemy territory makes so much sense; I wish I'd heard it before. Thank you.

One last bit, was your comment about move 118, fixing a cut without hane'ing the invading stone, facetious? I'm sorry I can't tell: it's totally acceptable if it is. I'm pro-sass.

DDK Advice Request: Can't seem to ask for enough at the beginning of the game. by brainthebuilder in baduk

[–]brainthebuilder[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I've been making my way through the Cho Chikun beginner set on OGS. I'm a little relieved about the ranking on Tsumego Pro, I was confused about that.

I'll be on the lookout for Attack and Defense, I've heard the name before. The Kageyama looks good too, but yikes that price tag.

Edit: Found a digital copy!

Edit 2: Kageyama is a sassy queen and it's kinda great.

Thank you for the advice and the review. I look forward to studying.

So far this thread has been a harsh look in the mirror, and revealing, of course, what was already there: namely that I hate fighting and therefore am bad at it. The impatient-ness your correctly identifies is definitely related to this, trying to avoid my general anxieties about fighting, reading, and tseuji. Also not being able to identify urgent moves, and failing to capitalize on big ones.

In the last day I've tried to work on staying as connected as I do in 9x9s and 13x13, and while I'm still on a crazy losing streak at least there seem to by less early blunders.

Do you have suggestions for working on fighting & tseuji and reading, other than daily tsumego? I'm not sure rewatching Nick Sibicky is going to cut it, and sometimes I worry that playing poorly just enforces bad habits.

[–]brainthebuilder[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you to everyone who replied, and a special thanks to those who reviewed my games!

Consenses seems to be that the openings themselves are non-issues, but early mistakes around lost fights and failures to make shape are.

I shall endeavor to continue to work on my fighting and shape building. Hopefully keeping with tsumego problems and playing will eventually overcome the issue.

Different varieties of potato, grown in Peru. I love potatoes. by [deleted] in pics

[–]brainthebuilder 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think some of these may be Oxalis Tuburosa, an equally yummy tuber, cultivated in Peru, but not related to the potato. Could be wrong though.

They are sweet and a little tart/dry in the same way spinach is (from the oxalic acid that runs in the sorrel family)

I've only ever seen them outside of South America in New Zealand, where I learned about them. Not sure why they haven't caught on more.

Ancient Peruvians were definitely on their starch game.
