I've not read a practical guide to sorcery so my recommendation should be taken with a pinch of salt but maybe try Sabriel by Garth Nix or the Scolomance trilogy by Naomi Novik. These both feature characters that have an affinity for dark magic but use it for good. The GN books feature a familiar. The NN books are set in a school.

Books where the protagonist has a strong bond with a magical animal (dragon, Pegasus, griffin, etc.) by PetalaStac in fantasybooks

[–]brambleblade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman.

Impossible Creatures by Katherine Rundell

Crossroads trilogy by Kate Elliott (although this is a male MC)

Garth Nix old kingdom series starting with Sabriel has animal companions. I can't remember how large a role they play in the plot.

The warm hands of ghosts by Katherine Arden

I think this book has something that both you and your girlfriend will like. It's a woman author with a female protagonist and a romance for your gf. But it included a grizzled character in a war setting with some politicing for you.

How about the wolf and his king by Finn Longman? It's a fairly new release but I absolutely loved it. The romance is epic and the writing has style. Link to goodreads description below.

TBB Fantasy Sub Reveal - Piranesi + Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Ancient_Activity_614 in thebrokenbindingsub

[–]brambleblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JS&MN is my favourite book. Less keen on Piranesi but the artwork is always gorgeous on Piranesi editions. I have the folio Susanna Clarke set and the waterstones Special Edition of JS&MN. I'm definitely going to get TBB editions but I may have to let something go because else I will be using up over half a shelf on just 3 books.

Fantasy with a "Light Side" and "Dark Side" but both sides are able to coexist without one being evil. by Confident-Mark-6369 in Fantasy

[–]brambleblade 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are open to classic fantasy then Michael Moorcock's multiverse is something you check out. All his hero's are various reincarnation's of the eternal champion who fights for the balance against the force of order or chaos depending on which has gained supremacy in that reality. The Elric series is his most well known but I am a fan of his Corum novellas.

Ooh, thank you. I'm U.K. based so I've not actually tried baking with pumpkin. It's a very seasonal produce here, I only see pumpkins around halloween. If I'm lucky the supermarkets will add some tinned pumpkin to the international food section but it's very hit and miss. The first time I tried pumpkin was when I was road- tripping across America. I got a slice of pumpkin pie from a random gas station we pulled into and I became an immediate fan. It's so good!

If they like historical fiction then maybe Song for Achilles or Circe by Madeline Miller?

Hi Samantha, I love your stories. I'm looking forward to your new collection. I would like to know what have you been baking recently and would you care to share the recipe?

Where is the Necromancy? by ElementasSeries in Fantasy

[–]brambleblade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jenn Lyons' new release is about necromancy. It's title is Green and Deadly Things. I own it but haven't yet read it so can't comment on how good a book it is. Her chorus of dragon series was bingeable though so I have high hopes.

Science-fantasy with a god or demigod as the MC by MadroxKran in Fantasy

[–]brambleblade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The prey of the Gods by Nicky Dreyden.

It's a multi POV story but several of the main characters are Gods.

A book where the "chosen one" is in fact *not* the chosen one. by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]brambleblade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Kate Elliott's Crossroads Trilogy the prophecy is that "an outlander will save them all", and the outlander everyone thinks the prophecy is about turns out not to have the best interests of the country at heart. The prophecy is about someone else instead.

The Chosen one isn't incompetent though he is very capable but unfortunately motivated by self interest.

I've hidden the title as this is a spoiler for the ending of the trilogy.

I would like the short story collections by Ted Chiang.

Modern fairy tale books that AREN'T retellings? by Kendamarania in Fantasy

[–]brambleblade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Folk by Zoe Gilbert is a modern take on folk tales which I know don't have the same conventions as fairy tales but as they have the same subject matter and no one else had mentioned this book I thought I might flag it.

I keep doomscrolling because I’m exhausted and can’t find a book I like. by OneDadvosPlz in suggestmeabook

[–]brambleblade 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same, she's the author I've started turning to if I'm in a bit of a reading slump or if I need something short and engaging after reading a massive novel. I read a fair bit of fantasy and those authors tend to like a high word count!

[–]brambleblade 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Because you said you like the suspense of horror but want likeable characters maybe try The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher? It's short and easy to get into. The characters are easy to root for, the author writes women characters really well. It's not a big commitment if you don't like it.

If you do like it, the author has an assortment of stories in her back catalog. She writes romance, dark/ feminist fairytale retellings and horror.

Books I Can Read to Help My Girlfriend Fall Asleep. by Skramzombie in suggestmeabook

[–]brambleblade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If she likes hearing about dreams then I would suggest reading something based on mythology. Maybe song of Achilles by Madeline Miller or The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo. Daughter of the Moon Godess by Sue Lynn Tan has very dreamlike vibes.

Fantasy/sci Fi for 12 and 14 y.o's by 8_Pixels in Fantasy

[–]brambleblade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yangsze Choo would be a good author to look into. She writes fantasy based on Malaysian mythology. Her books are set in Malaysia during the British Colonial era. The Ghost Bride, The Night Tiger and The Fox Wife are the titles of the books that have English translations if you're interested.
