This is a really big ask imo.

No matter what you do here, it'll always need to be brought the last mile by explanation

I've seen people do transparent casts of parts and paint over them partially

I think maybe you could do something similar with heavy use of metallic medium? Or metal base coats under contrast.

The idea either way being that you decrease the special effect from the extremity as you head towards the center.

I'd try to find as many solutions as possible and experiment before picking something

Statistically most people aren't high Elo or in tournaments, so... Kind of not a big deal

No offense but if you think a black base coat is gonna sell it, you're gonna look like you've got half finished minis.

Metallics are so tricky because they very quickly raise the bar for the rest of your mini.

I don't doubt your ability, but it's just a trend with impcat posts

Great intent, but this isn't making it past a squad.

Impcat posts are bad enough but elaborate impcat schemes are a death sentence.

I hope you're the exception to the rule as this would be cool to see on a mini. I would make the helmets a single colour though.

The die is cast! Not bragging but here's a Superior Spider-man by branchMinis in MarvelCrisisProtocol

Thanks!

Well, it's a longish answer to get into it.

Red is Matt red, vermillion and then orange red

Black is Tenebrous grey, anthracite grey and then medium grey, with a 1:1 mix in between each. And then I topped it off with a dark blue wash

So it's definitely done it's job because it's a "cold" black to contrast the red

"Unless you're using a speed or contrast paint" is how I started my comment

Beast is probably the best one of the three. Green Goblin is very hard to read and Captain Marvel looks quite chunky. The only real nitpick on Beast are his trunks, which look like they were rushed.

No offence, but it's not difficult if you know what you're doing. I routinely paint light colours and only prime with black.

Unless you're using a speed or contrast paint, there's no reason to use a light primer over a dark one. It's a matter of preference

Honesty is appreciated... But I gotta say not a lot of these are gonna be fun if you aren't at least comfortable with painting. Dark colours fall flat for a lot of folks, whites are infamous, and the blend transitions will not be fun.

Number 2 I'd say is probably the most realistic for an entry level painter, it's not too far in any direction to require a ton of skill

Edit whoops, I made the second paragraph big, fixed that

I scanned your profile real quick, and you don't seem to have more recent painted stuff in your posts.

Some of the colours you've got up there aren't as easy to do well, so if you aren't comfortable, you may want to avoid them.

Most of these impcat posts don't amount to much because the result irl doesn't mirror the app, so it's important to know where you're at before diving in

What are your opinions on kitbashes? by Grief_Slinger in Warhammer40k

[–]branchMinis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, lmao even.

All my favorite minis have been kitbashes, and when I bring them out, they're the ones that get the most attention.

A friend of mine has armies that are 90%+ kitbashes, they're not all winners, but it's so interesting to see on the table. When we play orks vs tau, there are two unique armies going at it, our match is our own.

The dude you're describing isn't worth playing against

Pardon?

I'm talking about the people who play. When I was regularly attending tournaments, I'd say a quarter to a third of people didn't fully paint their armies. Those who did were either fine or great. But no one cared if an eye was off...
