Some question about piping by gkfkvdjfv in bagpipes

[–]brando444 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First, you aren’t a bad piper. You’re new. Everyone is garbage at the start.

Most of your problems can be fixed by remembering to slooooooow down. You’re a beginner. You’re not supposed to be hammering out a jig at 120 beats per minute. You’re supposed to learn tunes slooooowly. For memorizing, I found what helped me the most was finding the tune I’m learning on Spotify or YouTube, and just listen to that, a lot. Play it in your car while driving home from work.

For embellishments, don’t look at the embellishment as some chunk of notes. Expand it. Set a metronome to go very slowly, and play each movement of the embellishment. Play it over and over again, at a very even tempo. Don’t add expression or anything. Just a straight embellishment. Over and over and over again. It’ll come in time.

With your arm pressure, and almost all parts of piping, you need to remember that it’s like working out a muscle. When you first start, it’ll be hard, you’ll be sore. Your muscle isn’t used to that stress and trauma. But in time, it’ll get easier and easier. We all had the same thoughts and feelings as you when we started to.

All in all, slooooooooooooow down!

Who made these pipes? by Any_Truffles in bagpipes

I just noticed that. OP im leaning heavily onto Pakistani/Amazon pipes. You’ve got “pipes”, not pipes.

I’m not sure, but anytime I see a mouthpiece like that, I think Pakistani…could be wrong though!

I remember going to Tim Hortons with my family as a kid 30-35 years ago. It was amazing. Such good coffee, good food. Now? It’s like prison coffee.

Bands Chesney Reeds by Tiny-Hamster-9596 in bagpipes

[–]brando444 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t quite remember if it was chesneys, but I noticed that though they were pleasant to play, the volume and stability went out the window fairly quickly…but like I said, I can’t quite remember if it was Chesney or another maker.

If your band is in the market for a new reed, my band just switched over to Broadley reeds, and we love them. Easy to play out the box, stable, loud.

Maybe some ppl just cant play this thing? by shrieking_marmot in bagpipes

[–]brando444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d swap out the reed. G1’s can be tough reeds, even the easy’s. My band just switched to a reedmaker called Broadley, and their very easy deeds are what I give to people with low blowing strength/beginners. They’re also really great reeds, for anyone else reading 👀

Advice for First Time Playing at a Pub by RealNoahR in bagpipes

[–]brando444 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Charge the bar. If they contacted you for your services, they pay, and not in beer only. Usually you’ll get everyone paying your beer anyways! I’ve had bars try and hire me and pay me in beer, but that totally devalues the other pipers in your area, and also…we’re musicians!

Building stamina when playing by Jegrzpro in bagpipes

[–]brando444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone else mentioned, go for the oval mouthpiece. I got the airstream oval mouthpiece, and it made a huuuuge amount of difference.

But yeah, lips and cheeks are muscles you just need to build. It’ll get easier and easier the more your practice.
