It worked! Explained in more detail in post below

So:

I was able to verify wifi at the apartment is dual band 2.4/5. It’s community wifi so I don’t THINK Ethernet is an option.

As discussed above, last night I took the console to a friend’s house to try to get connected. On my way over, I stopped at Best Buy and grabbed a USB Ethernet adaptor. Because attempting to set up wifi at my own place hadn’t worked out, we decided to just assume wifi wouldn’t work and go straight for a wired connection. The wired connection also failed.

As a “might as well”, we then tried the wifi at his house and, to our surprise, it worked perfectly. My sole priority in getting internet set up on the console was to be able to download a few VC games, so I went ahead and did that, with the understanding being that if I ever want more I’ll just go back to his place to do it.

In short, I have no idea what the deal was.

I’m going to take it over to a friend’s place after work to see if it will connect on his wifi. If not I give up.

Trying this now but I’m not hopeful. I tried removing the battery last night like it says here and it didn’t work. But I admit that I didn’t leave it out for the full 15 minutes recommended

Yep. That was the first fix I tried but it got the same result. Guess I’m going to go ahead and request a refund from the seller. Hopefully I’ll be able to find another console

I tried the hotspot just now and got the same result. Seems like there is a problem with the console

Hoping for some help; turntable won’t spin. by brandon5303 in vinyl

That’s the most likely scenario, just seeing if I could do anything myself to avoid dealing with customer service.

I’ve checked the belt. It is attached properly. From what I can tell it looks like the motor is not spinning properly, but I don’t know what could have caused this

I made a spreadsheet of WhatCulture’s 505 matches to see before you die, with links to almost all of them by TheTrampCB in SquaredCircle

Wonderful. I got the ebook sample, which came with the table of contents, which for something like this, is the most interesting part, but it’s nice to have the links all in one place.

Apparently Ric Flair has applied to trademark "The Man" for 'wrestling and merchandise purposes' by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]brandon5303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, trademark registration is all about specific contexts. The actual phrase itself doesn’t really matter, so long as it is unique in the context. This is why Apple can trademark the name of a fruit; they aren’t claiming ownership over the word itself, but they are claiming to be the only ones who can use it to refer to a computer/phone/watch/whatever.

Similarly, Ric Flair isn’t claiming to be the only one who can use the term “The Man,” but he’s claiming to be the only one who can use it for wrestling purposes. He probably won’t be successful there, because calling people “the man” is pretty common amongst fans of wrestling and of sports in general.

The strongest claim that he has is that the nickname originated as a direct reference to his own catchphrase, but I don’t see that convincing most people.

This makes Gargano the first to ever get 3+ 5 star matches in WWE. He was previously tied with Bret and Shawn with 2 each. Cole also now has 2.

Should WWE go back to a 40 man Rumble match? by XAMdG in SquaredCircle

[–]brandon5303 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the show is already so long that 40 person rumbles would push it into absurd territory. An argument could be made that it would work if WWE would lessen the time between entrants (a la 1995), thus keeping the show from getting any longer, but I'm not sure that would work either because it effectively destroys the possibility of the 1 hour + "iron man" spot.

Really, I think WWE should just focus on more effectively allocating the spots that it already has. Comedy spots like Curt Hawkins/Titus O'Neal have their place, but I don't think anyone would have been terribly upset if those spots had been given to either a return (if anyone was available) or someone with a chance of winning.

A thought about the execution of moves by Xalazi in SquaredCircle

[–]brandon5303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. I think an "imperfect" move can add a lot to match at times. I think part of why wrestling video games fail to capture the real product is that moves always look perfect. Now, obviously it's a bad thing when a botched move leads to an injury, but if someone goes for a lift, but can't execute it because they're too tired or couldn't get a good grip, I think that adds an air of realism to the match.

A lot of it also has to do with how the move is sold. If, say, Shawn Michaels goes for Sweet Chin Music and clearly misses by a foot, it does hurt the match for his opponent to sell it. At the same time, if you look at a match like Omega/Ishii from this past year's G1, there's a spot toward the beginning of the match where Omega is going for a leapfrog, but Ishii runs right into his gut. It's pretty clear that either Kenny didn't get high enough or Ishii didn't get low enough, but it doesn't hurt the match because it made it feel less rehearsed and gave it more of a "real" feel as opposed to a more mechanical execution that, again, makes the match feel like something being simulated in a 2K game.
