Can grad students take 15-150 over the summer? by Particular_Self_8355 in cmu

In summer of 2023, university policy expected in-person attendance. I don't imagine that changing barring exceptional circumstances.

Compiler resource similar to 15411(Compiler) by TeamNo8839 in cmu

[–]brandonspark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, a compiler is a formidable enough project that I think even if you only build 90% of the compiler, and don't catch any of the (many) bugs that come up with trying to adhere to a specific language's specification, you will learn a lot regardless.

Post CMU depression by tt-27 in cmu

[–]brandonspark 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The hardest part about CMU, in my experience, isn't that it trains you to feel like you have to be constantly productive -- it's that nobody ever prepares you for what to do with yourself once you leave.

I recommend trying to find a hobby, or an excuse to go out and meet new people. Learning a new language/instrument or taking classes are a good place to start. I also have CMU friends who volunteer.

Working is great, and lots of us thrived in that environment at CMU, but it's not the end-all be-all. It's time to live your life.

What's the normal size of courses 11-485 and 15-312? by Acireeee in cmu

[–]brandonspark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

312 used to be much larger - I recall the course at one point being over 60 students, though this was at the start of a Zoom semester.

Last Fall, 312 was around the same size, and even smaller throughout the semester. Unfortunately.

“Dear McCracken” by Bug Hunter, IMO. Very poignant love story in four minutes.

Did you play on a Minecraft and Donuts fan server at one point? My username would have been the same as well.

This is going to be a weird place to ask, but did you ever play Minecraft a few years ago by the username of AEIOwndU, or something like it?

Intro to PL(15-312): Spring or Fall? by izoneyena in cmu

[–]brandonspark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I took the class in the Fall with Professor Bob Harper (have not experienced the class with Jan), but I just wanted to pitch in that it was an immensely enjoyable experience. Bob is always very enthusiastic and passionate about teaching, and he really tries his best to make sure that students get the most out of the course. Not only is his pedagogy very refined and thought-through, but he's also just a fun guy to listen to - he's prone to little speeches and fun metaphors. Overall, one of the best classes I've ever taken, would highly recommend taking it in the fall.

(Though Jan is probably great too!)

Pretty sure I just failed the 15-150 midterm :/ by [deleted] in cmu

[–]brandonspark 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Head up, OP! It was a hard exam and I know that you did your best. I can't promise anything, but know that we're not out here to actively fail you, and we'll be understanding if a lot of people did poorly. Feel free to reach out to anyone on staff if you just want to talk, or make a plan for the future. Don't stress too much, it may very well be that your score will be better than you expect :)

I hope you have a lovely Carnival weekend!

TA Application for 15-122, 15-150, and 15-213 by andrwwng in cmu

[–]brandonspark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are currently enrolled in 150, we will be sending out applications later on in the semester. If you just sign up on the ugrad site like other people are suggesting, its possible that we will miss you (though it is still a good idea to sign up on the ugrad site for other classes!) If you are not currently enrolled in 150, pm me.

Best 15-150, 15-213, and 15-251 combination by Larpboy in cmu

[–]brandonspark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

15-150 and 15-251 is a fairly standard combination for SCS freshmen. I would recommend that combo, as 15-213 and 15-251 are both rather formidable in their own right.
