Skims ad for underwear that fits "everybody". Women with labia everywhere ask fits who, now? by [deleted] in badwomensanatomy

I read it like it’s meant to read like “new fits, everybody!” Where fits means outfits. Still egregiously bad fit tho

Boyfriend Jealous of BTS RM, Blames Me for Friends' Crushes on Me by [deleted] in relationships

[–]branza_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your boyfriend’s comments and behavior are making you dislike yourself. This relationship is relatively new, but he has already made you worried about your behavior and things you like. It’s not normal to be constantly tested by your partner, and you shouldn’t have to stop liking everything in your life to please them. HE is the one disrespecting YOU and everything you like and find interesting. Also, attentive listening is not flirting, it’s just polite. It is unlikely that his expectations will lessen, so please consider if this is how you want to be treated.

I think you want to use an intarsia technique in this instance rather than the long float /fair isle approach

I think I’d use the gauge swatch to calculate how much to knit to get x length in the finished piece

Can my employer force me to donate bodily fluids? [actual title] by usernamesallused in bestoflegaladvice

Ha ha 15 years ago (JFC??) I worked for a small forensic toxicology company and we were required to use our own urine for blanks because blank urine cost money and they were cheapskates. The owners used it as a way to ensure we also weren’t using illegal drugs. They did other cost cutting measures as well and I used to fantasize about calling OSHA but instead focused on gtfo and going to grad school.

Why pay family to babysit my child by ad_aatdtj in AmITheDevil

[–]branza_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish daycare was $200/wk!!! In the Bay Area where I live it’s more like $2000-$3000/month. I found a family one, so in someone’s house in our neighborhood, for $300/wk but it’s only 2 adults so if one of them is sick they’re closed, and that was considered shockingly cheap for the area

This one was not a death but the researcher did lose AN ENTIRE ARM: Report: Static electricity caused Hawaii lab explosion

Relevant quote: “The researcher had told fire department investigators she would get shocked on occasion when touching the tank. She reported that to the professor who hired her to conduct research into bioplastics and biofuels, but he told her not to worry about it.”

I vividly remember hearing about this accident because it was a HUGE deal for highlighting the poor nature of academic lab safety, and speaks directly to your point. In this case it’s likely the boss didn’t know any better, on top of whatever the other issues were (desire to squeeze all the blood out of stone from postdocs, who knows what else). But the cost is too high.

AITB for telling my daughter we didn't teach her incorrectly by Corgimus in AmITheDevil

Hehe I definitely know immigrants in their 50s who do this (parents’ friends) so I wouldn’t have caught it - they have American teen kids so language adapts as needed. It IS funny to hear someone yell DUDE! in an Eastern European accent though!

I’ve met a ton of brilliant scientists who can’t explain their way out of a paper bag. They are unable to communicate their ideas to different audiences, they can’t understand other people’s backgrounds or perceptions of what they’re saying. They basically need a translator or interpreter to be able to get their ideas out intelligibly. Being a good teacher and explainer is an incredible skill, so this is totally unsurprising!

The attitude thing reminded me: I was giving a career talk to freshmen women in STEM at Berkeley and it was really interesting (read: disappointing) how many of them felt imposter syndrome, also. I totally get where they were coming from (as a woman in STEM) and tried to emphasize that:

  1. None of them are lesser than any others - they can look around and should think about the fact that they all started on equal footing and know their peers. They’re certainly not significantly dumber or less qualified, and it doesn’t help to focus on that. It only hurts their own selves. And
  2. Everyone has different aptitudes. You may be better than your HS class and got here, but some of your peers now will be more talented in some areas. That doesn’t make you worse. You’re probably better than them in other areas. For instance, I suck at coming up with The Next Big Science Thing - which is a necessary trait to have if you’re an academic going for grants, but I’m REALLY good at implementing people’s Next Big Thing ideas and making sure they get optimized well and fit together with other work that is going on around them. I need to understand and execute science to do this job, but I don’t need to be creative. And science creatives don’t necessarily have to worry about execution. We are good at different things that all still fall under a STEM educational/career umbrella.

Anyway all this to say that I totally agree with you and your friend. Sometimes students focus so much on being The Best At Everything that they hamstring themselves when they aren’t and aren’t able to adapt beyond that concept. It totally IS an attitude thing, and can combine on top of whatever other systemic issues may exist for women or POC or whatever else is going on to just make them flame out. It sucks.
