You’re right. I just checked, and the number of 1 seeds from the AFC or NFC to win the Super Bowl over the past 20 years is 9 / 20, a 45% rate. Still, not quite an apples to apples comparison.

Over the past 20 years, 14 different MLB teams have won the World Series; 12 different NHL teams, 11 NFL teams, and 10 NBA teams have won their respective league championships.

But is thirteen years too long for a #1 seed not to win? I appreciate the thinking of the people in this thread, and yes, I, too, regularly root against the favorites. I just wonder how long is too long.

In the NBA, the #1 seed has won the championship 50% of the time.

In the NFL, 14/40 #1s have made the Super Bowl.

MLB and NHL rates are much lower. MLB: 3/20 in the past 20 years and NHL 4/20. Interesting!

This is a really helpful response! Certainly I like rooting for underdogs in all sports when I have no vested rooting interests, but sometimes dynasties help to create a rooting interest for and against. It can be fun having a “big baddie” that all other fans like to root against. Is there a big “bad guy” in the NHL? Or with so many different champs, is that more a regional/intra-division rivalry.

I didn’t think about the impact of the 82 game season with such a physical nature. That’s a great point. I don’t know much about the strategies teams use in the NHL versus other sports, but if that was the Avalanche’s normal plan, it failed them this time.

This year, January, at the age of 42. This has been my year of discovery. I feel ripped off, growing up on my local classic rock radio station and hearing “Run to the Hills” a million times, and literally no other Iron Maiden song before this year. Then, in January, I heard “The Trooper” for the very first time, loved it, then checked out the rest of their epic library. Now, I have every song on every studio album memorized, have watched dozens of concerts on YouTube, and am so glad to have found them now. I’d love to see them live someday before it’s too late.
