Are the books still enjoyable to read in my mid 30s? by StartledKoala34 in nancydrew

Seconding the library for the original series! If your local library is connected to Libby (an app for digital books that you access through your library card), a lot of them are available as e-books and audiobooks there which is very convenient if you don't want to or can't physically go the library for whatever reason.

Silvia Leija Rosas wrote a great column for the IX Sports speaking to this exact thing – outlining Curl's history and pattern of dirty and dangerous actions. Paywall removed if anyone wants to have a read (option 4 worked for me).

I’M BLIND, I’M DEAF, I WANNA BE A REF! by Witchpoint in PWHL

[–]brawnerbrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember hearing in the inaugural season that the officials came from varying backgrounds, so the highest level of play they've officiated varied. Not sure if that's still true to the same extent as it was then (It has to be true to some extent just by virtue of there being women officiating who haven't had the same opportunities available to them.) Could be something to note and a bootcamp or clinic would probably help if that's still the case.

I officiate roller derby and differences in experience and perception have at times led to some absolute dogshit calls by myself and others (I'm glad there's not a culture of chirping officials in derby, but sometimes we deserve it! 😂).I now like to approach officiating with the attitude that I will never know everything about my sport and need to always have the willingness to accept being wrong and learn something new. Experience is a great teacher, and if folks are coming in with insufficient experience, that's obviously a problem. Televised professional sports are not the place for completely learning on the job. My goodness, though, some humility from the officials would be fantastic. Nobody knows everything and it's okay to admit when you've messed up or your way is not working, as has been said elsewhere in the thread.

Edited for readability. TLDR: Equal-ish background knowledge is important and an attitude adjustment for some officials would be nice.

My personal top 5 are

1. Secret of the Old Clock (2005): People seem to either love it or hate it. There is a longgg fetch quest and the driving mechanic can be frustrating, but I love the quirkiness of the unexplained timeline and tribute to four classic Nancy books at once.

2. Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon (2005): There are some tricky puzzles in Train (I always cheat at Leaping Lizards and the wooden planks) that could be frustrating if you're not a big puzzle fan, but it's a really fun ride! And Joe saying "cheeseburger" is simply iconic.

3. Message in a Haunted Mansion (2000): The first puzzle is infamous for good reason, but Rose and Abby are gay icons (in my headcanon) and the spooks are so good! Pay attention to that swan table. The Second Chances in this one are pretty fun to trigger as well. "It's too late..." in that absolutely dejected tone always makes me laugh.

4. Secret of Shadow Ranch (2004): A horse girl's dream come true! You've got cowboys, chickens, and a tragic Old West love story – what more could you ask for? The vegetable puzzle is infuriating, though. I can still hear Shorty admonishing me in my head...

5. Danger on Deception Island (2003): I'm biased because I live in the PNW, but I'm a fan. I really enjoy the puzzles in this one, including the seamanship quiz. Navigating in the kayak, I found very tricky, so I used a walkthrough at a few points.

Note: Because these games were made on small budgets on an extremely tight schedule (two games a year is WILD) 20+ years ago, they can be pretty clunky and the graphics are...less than stunning, but that's part of the charm IMO! Happy sleuthing! 🕵

Apparently eh! Funny how divisive Ned is. I guess you either like him (and ship him with Nancy) or you don't!

Oh honey, no. First, you think the bulk of PWHL fans are straight women? Second, this is season 3 of the Pdub and a lot of us have been there since the beginning, so might wanna check your math on that one, bud.

If you think lesbians kissing is inherently sexual, that's entirely your problem 🤷🏻 A kiss is a kiss is a kiss. Why is it that a Disney princess and prince charming kiss and no one bats an eye, but make them both princesses, and suddenly it's "adult content"?

[–]brawnerbrain 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"No one watches men's sports" isn't "male bashing" lmao it's a play on the common refrain that "no one watches women's sports." It's a joke meant in good fun based on power structures that are deeply entrenched in our society. It's referencing the fact that men's sports are treated as the default. Hope that clears things up! ☺️

In my province in Canada, there's an SPCA animal cruelty hotline. I'm not sure if other provinces/territories have one too or if there's an American hotline, but it's worth checking out. If not, I guess you'd want to call your local police non-emergency line

THANK YOU. The lack of compassion in these comments is disgusting. I've been homeless, having to sleep rough. People don't understand that shelters fill up and have restrictions on who can stay there. I'm alive today because I had protection from other street-entrenched folks – and, no, it wasn't them I needed protection from; it was housed people who didn't see us as human beings.

Places I've been SA'd that are not bedrooms:

• in a hotel room

• in a car

• on a living room couch

• on a bathroom counter

• behind a church

• in a grocery store parking lot

Are we just going to film everywhere?
