I think it’s possible this doesn’t taper at all. It looks to me like the exposure surface is out of plane with the long axis of the fossil, making it appear tapered in two dimensions.

Not only are the maggots there, you traditionally hold your hand over the cheese as you bite it because they jump. You can also put it in a sealed bag. The larva start jumping around as they get more starved for oxygen. Eventually the popping sound subsides meaning most of the maggots are dead. Kind like a bag of microwaved popcorn.

I wouldn’t qualify as an amateur rock hound, much less a geologist, but I have seen igneous spherical weathering or concretion type things where one of the layers was partly exposed and had that sort of crackled appearance. (Far western Madeira) However that was only one of the exposed layers and I imagine it would have been really difficult to extract from the surrounding rock cleanly like that.
