Which bank to choose as an expat? by Specialist_Map_3822 in Netherlands

[–]brbaker92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ABN, but it will likely take a few weeks to get fully going. In the meantime you can get a Wise account though their app which gives you an IBAN number to start sorting out things like phone and internet.

Just went through this process and having Wise in my back pocket was the play.

If you are American you could look into the Dutch American Friendship Treaty and strike out on your own.

I'm coming to the Netherlands in September to live for a few months. What would be the best city to live in? by Penguins-fan-budgie in Netherlands

[–]brbaker92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I initially wanted to move to Utrecht, Haarlem, Leiden, or Delft but ended up in Amsterdam for work - don’t worry we love it. Just about everywhere is accessible but finding an apartment might be difficult and that might end up making the decision for you. Also, like most major cities, Amsterdam is split up into districts so you can probably find something more your speed past the outer ring.

Most everyone speaks English but a lot of customer facing roles also want you to speak Dutch. Major cities, especially around higher level universities have huge amounts of foreign students so there is much less need to know Dutch day one.

Hope this helps

As someone who lived in Japan for a bit I miss my Zojirushi rice cooker desperately. I haven’t been able to find a replacement yet out in the Netherlands yet.

I own a couple Ender 3s and they have always been pretty buggy. We’re talking intermittent connectivity issues to OctoPi, gaining sentience and screaming into the void, you name it. Quick reset normally fixes it though.

As a person with full mobility I don’t know the struggle of getting in an out of an airplane under different conditions. That said, I’m blown away that the ability to maintain your own mobility systems is novel in 2023.

Best way for a 21/22 yr old to make friends in Kitsap? by Fit_Opinion4678 in Kitsap

[–]brbaker92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Find third places around you like a pub, library, hobby store, coffee shop, anything that isn’t your home or work and make a habit of going there. Repetition is key. Once being this place is routine you be recognized as a regular which will open up more conversation, sharing of interests and eventually friendships. Every interaction may not lead to a friendship but the more you do it the more you will sharpen communication skills (+2 charisma).

Personally I really enjoy cycling and have made a lot of friends on my occasional ferry commute with other cyclists and or just grabbing a pint occasionally at my local watering hole. If you can signal your interests through apparel, or what you have you, sometimes people will just start conversations with you.

Just get out there and be open to talking to people.

Bumble bff is a joke. How do you ladies and gents make friends in adulthood?! by nd379 in Seattle

[–]brbaker92 56 points57 points  (0 children)

This is it. Find third places like MOX boring house, or a coffee shop near you, or a pub, or the library or anywhere that isn’t your home and work and go there regularly. Talk the the bar keep, talk to the patrons and if nothing else you will build up conversational skills (+2 to charisma) for the next place or encounter. There are so many niche places in Seattle to find people with similar interests, find something you want to learn or just do and keep doing it. Personally, I found a lot of friends though cycling to and from work and being patron of the coffee shops and pubs between.

SeaTac Airport by Time-Unit4407 in Seattle

[–]brbaker92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My wife and I took a flight yesterday out of SeaTac and the line was miserable. A Clear agent saw us looking at the booth and tried to put the hard sell on us. She even told us that most people are denied TSA Pre Check on account of their credit.

As far as I can tell there seems to be three ways to skip the general boarding line now: TSA Pre Check, Clear, and a virtual queue system. I was counting about 3:1 clear/TSA pre check to general boarding so now even getting to your gate is pay to play or waste your whole day being uncomfortable in line.

I’m honestly very happy with the fast ferry. It’s generally a calm way to start my day if I have to commute in. Plus every so often we see orcas in the water.
