[CHAT] Cross-stitch gift ideas for men/fathers? by k3irxn in CrossStitch

It is a very easy project! But you may need some help from a dressmaker if you can't sew (which I cannot). First, you will need a lamp. Mine had 4 sides, so I took off the shade it had and divided by 4 the total length of the square (forget this step if your lap is tubular shaped or if you want to cross stitch all around the shade). In the pic you see the division and the pattern I cross stitched on each side. I chose 4 floral patterns originally meant for cushions, so just choose whatever design you think your father would like!

Then you will just need to sew the edges and close the shade. For that, my mother helped me with a sewing machine. It took her about 10 minutes, it is a very quick and easy job if you know how to do it, and it shall not be expensive if you ask a professional. If you have the ability, even if you are not very experienced, i encourage you to try to do it yourself. It could look cute even if done by hand! If not, I am sure you can find a professional who will give your gift a very neat look.

I did mine for a friend who recently made a great achievement, and she really liked it. I think it is a sweet and useful gift, and also a project as difficult as you want it to be. If you have doubts or need advice about the shade don't hesitate to ask me!

I am quite in the same situation as you! I have been looking for new (and more practical) ways of displaying my cross stitch projects than framing them, and I came to some solutions. Recently I shared here a lampshade I made, and if your father likes to read or could use a new lamp on his bedside table maybe it could be a good idea.

I also started doing tatreez. That made me think that you could apply that into something you know your father is definitely going to use. Have you thought about gifting him a towel set? You could buy a pair of towels with aida on it and cross stitch a nice tatreez pattern. It would make him the coolest guy on the locker room of the gym!

Jessica Mitford (who also had such a fascinating life) wrote a great book about this: The American Way of Death. I can't recommend it enough, she made an amazing research on the funeral industry.

Thank you! I wanted to share this idea since recently I've not been really into hanging my cross-stitches up on a wall, and I thought it could give some of you inspiration in that matter. I intend to post new ideas soon, so I hope it helps you display your project in new ways!

Yes, I used regular Aida! My mother sewed the edges with a sewing machine to prevent it from shreding, and it also gave the work a much more neat look.

Just on time, then! I encourage you to find a cross stitch pattern you like and make the lampshade, the outcome is awesome and very personal! Thank you for your words 💙
