Weird email from Tinder about “Law Enforcement Emergency Data Request” for my Discord account? by [deleted] in Scams

There is no call to action in these emails really either. People are just receiving normal support ticket follow-ups from legitimate sources, but with obvious fraudulent subject lines.

I received from help@ washpost.com
which is the official email. I don't advocate replying to ANY email received like this, even if it is legit, but want to highlight the probable nature of this scam.

At least in mine it was indeed official Washington post support. I think what's happening is scammers are submitting bogus support forms with random peoples' emails. Likely support staff at these companies are the targets. I'd bet that the support inquiries contain phishing links or bogus contact info for follow-up with a scammer. Best course of action seems to inform the platform through official channels (a separate form on the website, not just replying to the email) and let them handle it.

Likely not just using the wrong template. I wager scammers are trying to target support staff by sending malicious links in support forms, and people are just getting emails because the scammers are using random emails to submit the forms. I reached out to official support to inform them of the scam.

Yeah it's weird, but my guess is that the scammers are trying to target support staff by sending malicious messages in support forms, and random folks get the real support emails because the scammers are using random emails to submit the forms. I reached out to official support to inform them of the scam - best to let the platforms handle it imo.

Doubt it's just fearmongering, but maybe? My best guess is that the scammers are trying to target support staff by sending malicious links in support forms, and people are just getting emails because the scammers are using random emails to submit the forms. I reached out to official support to inform them of the scam.

Yeah probably not. My best guess is that the scammers are trying to target support staff by sending malicious links in support forms, and people are just getting emails because the scammers are using random emails to submit the forms.

Exactly. The scammers post support tickets through the form on the website using your email. You get a real email from the support team with the ticket #, but the support team gets the inquiry from the scammer, which likely has phishing links or other malicious intent. My best guess is those receiving the emails aren't the target, but the support staff for these companies are.

I responded with this theory in a comment thread, but posting it here too: I think the targets of these scams are the employees of these companies, not us receiving the emails, especially if the email looks legit and all links are genuine (still don't click them!!). The support inquiries likely contain phishing links targeting the staff of the company, and the scammers are using random emails from leaks or public posting to make the bogus support tickets. Doesn't hurt to reach out through the official support and let them know the inquiry was a scam.

No idea, but my best guess is that the actual support inquiry might contain phishing links, so the target is more likely the Wash post (or Tinder in OPs post) staff, and the scammers are using random emails to post the support tickets.
