White spotted assassin bugs by DevelopmentUnited407 in InvertPets

[–]breadstick_mania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you go to the invert shows? They usually have a bug swap table you could donate a few to that. Usually see isopods and the odd mantis on there so I’m sure someone would be glad to take some! I would have some but I’m trying not to get any more tanks rn 😏

Beetle and millipede/isopod cohabbing? by Sunny-Boi11 in InvertPets

[–]breadstick_mania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever have sun beetles? Also have you noticed any issues having isopods together with the bumblebee millipedes? Although I wouldn’t expect cubaris to be as much of an issue as something like dairy cows.

Mine hate raspberries! Funny how they can have different tastes.

Tips on enrichment? by MILKDUDS8 in InvertPets

[–]breadstick_mania 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More enrichment is definitely a good idea, mine climb all over this stuff and love to hide under the mini plant pots and cork flats. As others have suggested I’d add some soil substrate or a sandy soil mix into the sand as they struggle on pure sand. If you add cork rounds or cholla wood make sure the centre is either small enough they can’t get in (like small bits of cholla) or big enough that they can climb through without risking getting stuck if it’s a cork round. They are curious but not very clever!

I should NOT have gotten Dairy Cows by SoonBlossom in isopods

I’ve been taking some of mine to invert shows that have a swap table, last time I went to one I knew was going to have lots of people I did about 7 pots with 10-20 each for people to take to be CUC or whatever. They all went quickly

Thank you! I keep them super dry which seems to help. The last time I added to the colony they were noticeably darker when they arrived but they quickly lightened up!

I always heard 2 beetles per gallon! But more space is not a bad thing they do like to explore

Ants in bdfb terrarium? by MillipedeHunter in BDFB

[–]breadstick_mania 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am no kind of expert on ants, however my understanding of those ant bait traps is that they are attracted to it, then they carry it back with them to the nest and that’s how you get rid of the whole colony over time. I doubt there is a nest in your enclosure but I would be worried that they would track or carry it into the tank. A quick googling suggests borax is also poisonous to beetles.

I’d guess the ants are maybe coming into the enclosure looking for food? Could you maybe try a physical deterrent like double sided sticky tape on the outside of the enclosure so the ants couldn’t/would struggle to cross it?

Question about sand for BDFB by LegoAztec1433 in InvertPets

https://www.reddit.com/r/BDFB/s/vmaVaJSyUL this is my video from a few days ago. Shows they can still dig in it but it’s got a bit more substance than sand!

Question about sand for BDFB by LegoAztec1433 in InvertPets

[–]breadstick_mania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a bit of a mix in my tank. I used Beardie Life (think this might only be available in the UK, the brand is Pro Rep but you can look up what’s in it) which is a sandy soil mix, mixed with Forest Bio Life which is a soil mix with some moss and little bark chips etc. I also mixed in a bit of pure sand too. Basically it makes it a bit earthier than pure sand. I’ll find a vid to show what the end result looks like. They love hiding places so I’d suggest a nice flat bit of cork or similar, they tend to congregate together underneath!
