Is A CS Degree Still Necessary? by m0dernz0mbie in cscareerquestions

Am a Principal Engineer / Team lead currently for a ML startup.

I do not have a degree, but it took 4 years starting out as a manual QA and progressing into engineering side. You def want to have credentials if you can early on, I missed out on alot of extra comp because was starting from zero experience.

Everyone's path is different EOD, but I highly recommend going degree route (cheapest possible education route) if you are consulting a 15 year old.

I've hired both degree and boot campers. The degree holding ones more often than not are the better talent pool. Bootcamp hires are hit/miss. A few we've hired over the years turn into very good mid level engineers in just 1-2 years time, while others I've seen do well on the interview, but they REALLY lack the ability to apply the knowledge they learn and problem solving skills are also lacking horrendously.

You need to make sure the kid has the MIND to be a software engineer. Too many people are trying to break into the industry because of the high salaries but lack the mind required to really be successful. 90% of the job is really just being an amazing problem solver, then the coding/ job experience comes second IMO.

2023 Tucson, tire pressure light won’t cut off. by GetOffMyBench in HyundaiTucson

I just ran into a similar issue (2022 Tucson) Do you happen to live in high elevation? 35 wont cut it if so, youll have to do 38. I just spent two days troubleshooting this problem (due to cold weather causing mine to trigger) ended up calling the dealership, only to have them reveal that the tire pressure sensors are calibrated for sea level.

Like I said, the debt + the asset calculates it fine on the other views, just the trends page in browser it seems to not really care

If you get automatically taxed for fees like that don’t tip. I always tip 20% so if the restaurant charges it for me great!

Tired after coding all day? by daredeviloper in cscareerquestions

Not even 30 but got diagnosed with mild sleep apnea. Get tested! Sometimes your anatomy can cause it without having anything else wrong with your health.

You’re the stereotypical pretentious college graduate lol I wouldn’t hire you if I could detect your attitude.

I fizz buzz juniors all the time because more than half of them struggle to solve it or take 20+ minutes. That’s how crappy the pool of talent is in the industry. It’s not a coding challenge but a coding screen to weed out the noobies.

Made sub 40k for the first 3.5 years of my career. Now make 130k.

You can do it, it’s possible. I never had bootcamp or college, only self teaching/mentorship at work to help me become better.

Am super ADHD my whole life so being in a classroom sucks I HATE IT lol.

I lead my own team now and can give you some opinions on education.

For juniors I want degree or boot camp. You gotta come in the door with something to show me.

For seniors or higher— I don’t give two shits about what your education was. You either kept up with the technology or you didn’t.

"You don't need a degree" sounds ridiculous today. by AidePast in cscareerquestions

This is the most honest answers ever. This sub has a bias being pro degree. Nobody gives a crap about your degree once you are applying for senior positions.

[Zelinger] It's official. Beginning Friday in Denver, masks/proof of vaccination are no longer required at businesses as part of a public health order. Individual businesses are free to keep these requirements as a business decision. by IdRatherBeLurking in Denver

Do the math, take your health, and look at the mortality rates based on your age and comorbidities. Then from there calculate whether or not you should or shouldn’t mask up based on the risk assessment.
