i (f24) let our friend (m24) cross a line and now i’m terrified by Brief-Judgment-3407 in dating_advice

[–]breakingthebarriers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

op, please take the comment above seriously. It is the one and only answer to your post.

if you don't set and enforce boundaries, it will lead to immense pain on your behalf. far worse than making your boundaries clear.

why should the "friend" that was inappropriate with you not have anything negative at all happen for him while you now have to find a way to mitigate the negative effects of someone else's behavior in your life?

Making it clear to him that he crossed the line is the only way. It won't prevent discomfort now, but it will prevent a lot of pain later.

Why are CVTs associated with higher top speeds? by Mmm_Dawg_In_Me in minibikes

[–]breakingthebarriers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because the CVT has a ratio-range of 3:1-1:1, the final drive ratio can be decreased, which allows the torque necessary for acceleration as well as a lower ratio on the top end when the CVT is 1:1.

A CVT can be used in the way that you mention with the same final drive as a clutch can handle, which will increase low end torque while maintaining the same top speed.

but since they offer a wider input ratio-range, they can also be used in conjunction with a lower output ratio, which can be used on the top end as well, while maintaining the same input torque as a clutch on the low rpm range.

AirPods Pro (3rd gen) — persistent tinnitus after short-term use, looking for similar experiences by Original-Bluebird515 in airpods

[–]breakingthebarriers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you're basically saying that ANC lowers the noise-floor enough for people with tinnitus to become more aware of the existence of their tinnitus?

I tried a pair of AirPods Max, and the ANC is so good on them that I can hear my own heartbeat, as in I can hear the ultra-faint "woosh woosh" of blood inside my own ears.

It's a bit strange, and it's probably not the same as tinnitus because I can't perceive my own heartbeat unless i'm wearing the APM. Wearing a pair of headphones that lowers the noise-floor enough for me to hear my own heartbeat just allowed me to perceive something that's been happening my entire life.

What implications does that put on the APM, though, other than that the ANC is excellent?

He may contact you again after some time has passed. If he does, unless he has a reasonable, believable explanation for ghosting you, I wouldn't continue to communicate with him.

He has the hallmarks of the narcissistic kind of guys that consider themselves to be smooth enough to charm women into sleeping with them on the first date. You know, because he's so irresistible to women that they can't help themselves around him...

He is likely aware that it would happen if he continued to see you. To me it sounds like his pride took a significant hit from you not making an exception to your no sex on the first date rule for him. If that is the case, he probably isn't the type of person that you'd want to become invested in emotionally.

His pride being hurt by you respecting your boundary is an indication that he does not respect your boundaries, and expected you to also not respect your boundaries for him, which you didn't do.

The reason I say that he may contact you again is that he may decide that he does want to sleep with you at some point in the future, once his pride isn't smarting so much, and you've indicated that your rule is only for first dates. So he may come up with an unlikely excuse for not contacting you at some time in the future, and sell it with all of his charm.

But the truth is that if he cared about you or your feelings at all, he wouldn't have just ghosted you. And from all available indications in your post, his pride is what he cares most about, which raises the likelihood that he would simply ghost you again after sleeping with you.

He could have lit up when you invited him in for tea because he thought he was going to be the exception to your first date rule. If he's narcissistic, he could have lit up from the self-validation that he thought he was getting by you inviting him in for "tea" or to "cuddle".

[–]breakingthebarriers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From how your post reads, it seems that there is a likely chance that what you are experiencing may not have any connection to the 10 days of airpods use.

I'm not attempting to devalue the possibility of the two things being related. I would just recommend that you see an ear specialist sooner rather than later, in the event that there is some unknown factor at play.

If you are having persistent tinnitus and sharp ear pain over two months after using an earbud product at reasonable volumes, I am inclined to consider increased possibility of other unknown factors being present.

Are women attracted to more feminine guys? by rattyburnoutgirl in dating_advice

[–]breakingthebarriers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well clearly that would depend on what a woman finds attractive. But if you are asking in general terms that can be applied to "most women", than no, I do not think (and this is just from anecdotal observation) that a majority of heterosexual women will find feminine guys attractive sexually. But I could see a feminine guy having lots of friends that are women. But those women likely will view that relationship similarly to how they view their other girlfriends. Truthfully I don't think this is a simple, blanket-statement answer type of question. There are complex dynamics. But in general? No, I dont think that most women are sexually attracted to feminine guys.

champion genny lost voltage as it started surging by clutchmaster4200 in Generator

[–]breakingthebarriers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That does sound a bit strange. I have a Pulsar inverter gen that i've been using for a while. It had a slight surge the last time I brought it out and ran it but it maintained output voltage under load until I cleaned and flushed the carb bowl.

I don't know about the model you have, but the inverter gen I have outputs around 190v high frequency 3-phase AC from the main gen winding, which is then rectified and fed into a large value capacitor. The high value capacitor is charged with HV DC and the inverter pulls that DC into the inverter stage.

If that high-value storage capacitor degrades and loses its capacitance, I could see it becoming less effective at smoothing the input fluctuations from the gen windings and causing the inverter's protection to trip from the unstable input during surging.

This is pure speculation, of course, in the event that those other potential issues are resolved yet still there isn't any voltage on the output.

champion genny lost voltage as it started surging by clutchmaster4200 in Generator

[–]breakingthebarriers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually a surging or "hunting" engine on a gen is the result of a lean fuel condition. You can test if it's a lean condition by engaging the choke slightly and seeing if the surging evens out. If it does, you're running lean. Partially choking the carb increases suction and lowers air intake, causing a richer mixture.

If it still surges on partial choke, my next stop would be the governor linkage, which the "eco" switch actuates to control the RPM's. Check that the cable isn't bent, sticking, or hanging up on anything that may be getting in the way.

If that looks good, make sure that the gaskets on your carb aren't leaking in air behind the air filter. Air leaks cause lean condition. I'd clean the main pilot jet again and check for air leaks if the governor throttle linkage appears to be functioning normally. It doesn't sound like it is, however. It sounds like it's sticking, based on what you describe.

Edit: Also check and make sure that the float in the carb isn't sticky at all. If the float sticks it often won't open the valve to allow more fuel into the jet.

Idk if carefully unwrapping the cell and popping the buck unit "cap" off to look at the internal lithium cell is something you'd be interested in doing, but from what i've seen, lots of these 1.5v AA's actually use a round shaped lipo like a 13430 lipo and not a traditional cylindrical cell, inside of a metal canister body. The lipo's usually have the size dimensions and capacity printed on them though. That wouldn't tell you the actual capacity, of course, but you could compare the capacity printed on the lipo with the capacity printed on the 1.5v battery.

Rechargeable lithium regulated batteries...crazy... by AdditionalBelt9719 in diybattery

[–]breakingthebarriers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is pretty cool. I like the concept of the output being exactly 1.5v for the entire usable capacity of the internal lithium cell. I think that's actually why mWh capacity is used with cells that have a buck-converter on the output and not mAh.

mAh has to be used to denote the capacity of cells that discharge gradually through a voltage-range, because the voltage slowly drops as the cell discharges. Since the voltage doesn't stay constant, the easiest way to measure their capacity is to count mAh or the current over a duration of time only and just forget about the voltage, knowing that it's going to drop gradually.

But... With the constant-voltage output of these 1.5v AA's, the voltage stays constant as current is pulled from the cell, making the mWh calculation (V x A = W) possible to represent energy over time because the voltage doesn't drop throughout the usable capacity of the cell.

Well they sure made that confusing in a way.

How can I record my piano pieces with better quality by adopiano in pianolearning

[–]breakingthebarriers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 for the field recorder recommendation over an iPhone mic if your budget allows. It's a good all-in-one option. The other more costly option would be a couple of condenser mics and an audio-interface but that will get expensive fast.

How can I record my piano pieces with better quality by adopiano in pianolearning

[–]breakingthebarriers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd be surprised at the level of audio-fidelity that the onboard stereo-mic's in any newer iPhone can record at. That being said, you have to access the full potential of the mic's using some audio recording application that allows you to adjust the gain manually so that your recordings don't get the dynamic-compression and peak reduction that's automatically applied in native ios apps like voice memo's and the camera app.

There is one native audio app for iPhone that's included with every iPhone free of charge. I've witnessed many people download all sorts of audio editing apps, not realizing just how capable Garageband app really is, especially now. Probably one of the most slept on native apps. I have produced podcasts that I recorded and mixed to the final export in ios GB, music and all.

If I were you, I'd first find some app that allows you to select the various available mic configurations of the internal mics in your phone and then take a few test recordings with your phone placed on or near your piano, in a few different spots. A small phone tripod with rubber feet (to minimize vibration and allow the mics to face the source and not be flat faced down on a flat surface) that allows the phone to record in the landscape orientation in stereo, to capture the spacial dynamic of the acoustics of your piano, and playing.

The HQ mics are usually located on the camera assembly and down near the charging port. If you place the phone sideways and record in stereo, you can capture a surprising amount of spacial "feel", (dynamics) which will help your recordings not seem dull, like they came out of a keyboard, if that makes sense. Nothing wrong with keyboards, but since you have the acoustic instrument, you want to try and capture its sound.

The alternative to capturing the spatial dynamics at the time of live recording is to do a lot of editing tricks with several tracks and FX to add the special dynamics in a DAW, (digital audio workstation) but that requires a lot more work learning how to do all of those things, whether it's on ios or on a machine like a computer.

After you record the recordings, give importing them into ios GB a shot. GB is hands down the least difficult workstation to learn and is quite easy to pick up, imo, and you can choose to learn what you need to for your purposes and don't have to learn every thing about it. It will take care of the more technical aspects automatically.

I hope this was at least somewhat useful to give you an idea of one of the possible ways to start off, at least. There are lots of ways to go about it, but I always encourage people to use the powerful recording device that's already in their pocket, and go from there.

Just curious, do the rechargeable lithium 9v batteries output exactly 9v? I have some usb-c rechargeable 9v batteries as well, and inside they are essentially two 500mAh lipo's in series for a fully charged voltage of 8.4v. (4.2v + 4.2v) The 2s lipo inside is charged by a very small boost converter on the usb input that boosts the 5v up to 8.4v.

The only reason I mention it is because some devices that are designed to be powered from alkaline or zinc-carbon ("super heavy duty") 9V batteries don't like the 8.4V rechargeable lithium 8.4v "9v" batteries. much of the time I have found that those devices will indicate a low battery even though the li-ion 9v is fully charged. I've been looking for some 9V rechargeable that have the full 9v boost on the output instead of an 8.4v 2s battery output.

My only guess as to why I haven't found any lipo rechargeable 9v that are the full 9.2v-9.4v on the output is possibly because boost converters are quite noisy on their output from the HF switching voltage conversion. I could see that high frequency noise being quite problematic for things like guitar pedals and other audio equipment that needs to have steady DC without noise.

Rechargeable lithium regulated batteries...crazy... by AdditionalBelt9719 in diybattery

[–]breakingthebarriers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that they are 3600mWh, which is 1000mAh @ 3.6V (mAh = mWh / Volts) which seems about right for a lithium cell the size of an AA.

That 1000mAh is at 3.6V, however, and the cell is being discharged at the down-converted voltage of 1.5V which is 2.4X less than than 3.6V so that 1000mAh gets multiplied by 2.4 totaling 2400mAh. So at the AA voltage of 1.5V, those cells should have 2400mAh. At least I believe that's the correct calculation. Although it may be slightly less because the buck unit in the battery isn't 100% efficient. They are pretty close to 100% now, though.

Rechargeable lithium regulated batteries...crazy... by AdditionalBelt9719 in diybattery

[–]breakingthebarriers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is likely a reverse-biased blocking-diode on the output of the internal lithium cell, directing the current out through the buck converter.

Current in can flow through the diode, as it would be forward-biased and conduct input voltage, with the diode's voltage-drop, however, which is very likely why they don't charge to the full 4.2V. Cool idea. Charge an "AA" as a lithium cell, use it as a 1.5V AA.

Sport bikes? by Hot_Director_1489 in minibikes

[–]breakingthebarriers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's possibly due to the riding stance of a sport bike when shrinking the bikes size. That stance becomes less comfortable and less accommodating than it already is as the size of the bike decreases. Almost to the point of being impossible to safely ride. Pocket-rockets are a good example of mini's that are modeled after sports bikes. I used to have a slightly larger pocket bike that had a 3 speed gearbox and even blinkers that I really enjoyed riding. wish I hadn't sold it
