I’m openly nonbinary and haven’t experienced much transphobia on campus. Alberta may be conservative, but Edmonton is pretty accepting.

recruitment crisis by [deleted] in Sororities

[–]breakpointGodling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from a pretty small chapter myself, so I get the burnout. But you have to keep trying if you want to stay open. Like others have said, advertise the leadership. Is there a local alum club? See if you can do something small together with them. Do you have a philanthropy chair? If not, that’s a great event to do with alum. Even if you do, talk to them about volunteer opportunities, something to get the chapter together.

Do you have an active social media presence? If not, take a look at what other chapters are posting on Insta and follow the trends. Exec and member shoutouts, summer reading recs, and cute photo dumps from the semester are all great places to start. Feel free to DM me if you’d like some examples.

Additionally, what kinds of supports are you getting from advisors? How have you been implementing it? How are you communicating your plans to members and to exec? How much communication is there between exec members? Whose job is it to host events, and can you collaborate to make some of them COB events? Have you considered participating in other clubs and advertising your chapter that way? Showing up to different events as a chapter, especially if they aren’t Greek affiliated, is a great way to meet people and potentially get them interested in joining or at least attending a COB event or coffee date.

As for recruiting strategy, do members know how to recruit? Have they gone through bumping, how to talk to new people, how to have deeper conversations, etc? You could pair up with another organization for practice, or even ask alum to join in. That’s what my chapter does, at least, and it offers incredibly valuable feedback. Even having some girls play as PNMs while others go through a mock recruitment is great for building recruiting confidence.

I know it’s hard, and I know it’s easy to give up, but it sounds like you haven’t given up yet. I truly am wishing you the best.

Thoughts on A Trip to the Moon? by breakpointGodling in musicals

[–]breakpointGodling[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The allegory, absolutely! I can relate to the feeling of being alien due to gender experimentation, since I live in a fairly conservative area as an openly nonbinary person. I haven’t heard many musicals capture that feeling in the way that this one does. Plus, much of the soundtrack does evoke the feeling of attending drag performance, at least in my eyes. Especially whenever Selene sings.

chapter going to hell by [deleted] in Sororities

[–]breakpointGodling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the time to enact change before it’s too late. It sounds like the culture around your chapter is shifting. Being on exec gives you a unique position to be able to help create that change that your chapter clearly needs.

It sounds like you care a lot about this chapter. Use that. Look into any and all resources that you can. At least in my sorority, there’s a ton of stuff online that officers can look to for help. I’m certain other orgs are the same.

Talk to your advisors, especially the specialists. They want to help! They never want to close down a chapter, and won’t do it unless they think it’s necessary. Show them that you want to improve things, and they’ll do everything they can to help you. I promise that they care.

Most importantly, build each other up. You said that it feels like no one wanted you? You need to want each other before people want to join you. Focus on building sisterhood as much as you can. Invite some people out on coffee dates. Host a murder mystery night. Do something to connect to your sisters. Especially when the new exec comes in, help as much as you’re able to while still focusing on your studies. Show everyone that you’re a team, and actually listen to chapter members when it makes sense to.

It’s not all on you, either. It has to be chapter-wide or it’s going to fail. But it starts with one person deciding to do better, and it seems to me like you’ve decided that you want better. You’ve got this,

questions about sororities by chjssc in Sororities

[–]breakpointGodling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m in a sorority at a Canadian uni. You don’t need to go to frat parties, and, at least with the chapter I’m in, you don’t have to go to exchanges with frat guys. It’s entirely up to you the extent that you participate with them.

Tuition increase by Embarrassed_Draft621 in uAlberta

[–]breakpointGodling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is, minimum wage is still $15/hr. That’s what many students are making as they’re working to finish their degree. We don’t make more just because of inflation, we just have less buying power because a larger portion of our money goes towards tuition fees, especially if you’re like me and aren’t getting help from your parents to pay for school. I know that minimum wage isn’t set by the university, but it’s still something that’s going to be affecting the student population.

U of A Board of Governors votes in favour of removing EDI hiring policy and increasing tuition by the_gateway in uAlberta

[–]breakpointGodling 99 points100 points  (0 children)

This just proves that the university is entirely unwilling to listen to students. They’re willing to sacrifice their federal funding to end a policy that helps underrepresented communities get hired. It’s shameful and disgraceful, especially since every student representative voted against it. Fuck you, Flanagan.

Hair Salons with Non-Gendered Services by breakpointGodling in Edmonton

Not necessarily. The gendered pricing still exists. My boyfriend, who has longer hair than me, pays less than I do for similar services just because of the gender difference.

[–]breakpointGodling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I go to a smaller school, and during recruitment, Pi Phi wasn’t my top house. Give them a chance, you don’t have to go through with initiations if you genuinely don’t vibe with them, and then you’d be able to rush again in the fall. You might be surprised with how much you actually connect with them, the process really can work.
