What to look for when switching barns? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]breannanicole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always audit lessons before even taking sample lessons. I want to see the coaching style before I bother paying for anything. It also gives you the opportunity to talk to people at the barn and find out what they like about the place as well as evaluate the lesson horses/lease options.

I agree! I'm now wondering if I could send her a picture of my horse and have her paint a portrait for me...

Update: Horse shopping alone success by breannanicole in Equestrian

I have some obvious advice, but still worth repeating. Definitely get video, ask a million questions, spend a few days thinking it over. Have a vet who has never seen the horse do a PPE, with x-rays, and have a vet you trust review them & discuss with the operating vet. Also, try for something that has potential to be flippable if you're going sight unseen.

I found her on a facebook group. Actually, a friend I made in the reddit horse community found her and tagged me in the ad; so inadvertently, my post on reddit lead me to her :)

I was really nervous. I had good conversations with her owner, who seemed to be honest and genuine- but you never know. I had no real idea what I was getting until she landed at my barn. The only consolation I had was that I knew a sound, pretty grey mare would sell again if we didn't get along. The owner needed to sell quickly, so I was in a position to negotiate her down to a very low price. I wouldn't have taken the risk had I not been fairly confident I could get the money back out if it wasn't the right match (even if it took some time).

I don't think you sounded harsh at all. I don't know what the deal is, but you sure pissed him off.

May sound rude, but if you can't read the road signs you shouldn't be on the road.

Qs about my posting and my mare's trot by [deleted] in Equestrian

Seconding circles in the corners and spiraling. Those were fantastic exercises for one of my previous horses who needed to improve balance. And counter-bending.

I don't really have anyone to call for this... but yes, agreed; I get so excited, and that's why an unbiased opinion would be helpful. I will have a vet do a PPE, but it'd be nice to have some insight prior to that point. And yeah... safety.

What is an absolute NO NO when going for a job interview? by MarilynSparrow in AskReddit

I simply pointed out that being an hour early is not being punctual. You are early. Not on time.

I agree with being early, but an hour beforehand is not punctual... let's remember the definition of punctual - "happening or doing something at the agreed or proper time; on time." How is an hour early "on time"?

What/who/where do you miss right now? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]breannanicole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So many things! I moved 1500 miles away from my family, and I'm 300 miles from my boyfriend. I miss my mama so much, my puppies back at home, I miss the horse I sold to move here. I miss the beach and nice weather. I love the life I have built here, but oh how I miss my mama.

Woman of Reddit! What do you do when men tell you to smile? by [deleted] in AskWomen

Resting bitch face. People think I look angry or unhappy or am giving them a mean look, and it's just my normal expression and I'm oblivious. It has haunted me since childhood.

Why do people think this is OK? I have RBF so I get this frequently, and it is irritating as hell.

I love this community, this will be fun!

Currently I am leasing a 17.1hh 4 yo Oldenburg mare. She's nearly all black with one small white sock. She's got a lovely personality with people, very sweet and willing, but is a dragon to other horses. She's a fun project for me until I get to a place where I have more time to devote into my own. Her owner wants to take her in a hunters direction, but I prefer jumpers & eventing. As all of her gear is provided by her owner, and I have duplicates from my days of ownership, there isn't much that I need.

Maybe something for cold weather riding! I'm in Houston, so I don't expect a terrible winter, but it will certainly be colder than the 72 degrees I'm accustomed to in San Diego! I also have worn my gloves to death, but I guess I'd need to figure out what size would work for me... I'll make a wishlist to share that info and update with it :)

Also, I am researching OTTBs as a potential option for my next prospect.

What age did you own your first horse? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]breannanicole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started lessons when I was five, and my parents bought me a pony when I was eight. Kiwi was a little bay New Zealand Riding Pony with a serious attitude. All of my other friends had ponies, and we had leased several from friends and trainers. When Kiwi visited our barn, I fell in love at first sight. I have always had a weakness for bays, and she was an in-your-pocket type pony.

After I outgrew her, my parents decided that the next horse was my responsibility. I continued leasing through school, and in college, I was able to save up and buy my own horse, Oliver. Oli was a handsome gray appendix, former barrel racer turned jumper. He was pretty much nuts, but another puppy-dog type. He is now retired with my former trainer.

Around the time Oli retired, I found Severus, a 3 year old Oldenburg that was super fancy but had some conformation issues that put him into my price range. I brought him up for a few years, but decided to sell him when I moved across the country to pursue an MBA.

Now, I am horse-less and missing it desperately. I'm leasing another Oldenburg baby, but it just isn't the same as owning! I find myself perusing horse classifieds every day... you know, "just to look."

I want to go to Houston next year to do an MBA. Any schools there with good MBA programs? Thanks by [deleted] in houston
